2 & 3 have the hydraulic pumps fitted. You need to start one of these engines first (generally 3 to have the same routine) to have hydraulic pressure to the brakes. Brakes get initially set using an electric auxiliary pump before engine starts. 1 & 4 engines drive the cabin superchargers which provide pressurization for the cabin at higher altitude. Although the cabin superchargers are running with the engines running, the system doesn’t start working until the aircraft lifts off the ground.

Though I had just turned 4, in 1959 one of my first flights was on a DC-6, flying to Hawaii from Los Angelos. As the engines were being started up, my mom and I were looking out the window and noticed a long blue wire was being drawn up into the propeller, like winding a spool of thread. We mentioned this to the stewardess and she ran up to the pilot and the engine was shut off. It took the mechanics 2 1/2 hours to unwind the wire from the propeller and we finally took off on a flight that took over 8 hours. The piston engines, to me, a four year old, were deafening. I miss those days of gracious air travel: meeting people at the gate, no security, people dressed up, planes kept more to a schedule because time was budgeted in for any potential delays. We flew low over mountain tops as we were served bacon and eggs for breakfast. As a child I got a pin of pilot wings to clip to my vest. My grandparents were frequent flyers so we got to sit in the fancy lounge provided by the airline for cocktails (I got a Shirley Temple - cherry with 7-up). Gone are those days, gone with the wind!
My father was a C-118 guy from VR-51 back in the day. I got to play a bit at the base simulator. Fun times! Thanks dad!

I got to fly on an Air Force C-118, which was the AF version of the DC-6 in 1970 through mid '71. It was an air evacuation airplane with a big red cross on the tail. At the time, my father was in the Air Force and stationed at Izmir, Turkey working for NATO. I was 13 years old and had braces, however there was no orthodontist at the US military hospital in Izmir. So every month, the Air Force flew me and about 7 or 8 other kids, along with our moms, to Athens, Greece where there was an Air Force base and an orthodontist. We'd fly out on Tuesday afternoon, have our orthodontist appointments on Wednesday and then they'd fly us back on Thursday. I think we did that about 6 or 7 times before our family was sent back to the states. I wish I'd have taken pictures of the airplane and flight. Thanks for sharing this video.

Always loved the DC-6 more than anything else in airline service. The Connie is probably more beautiful, but there weren't many of those left when I was an airspotter, only Super Connies, so our love for a Connie would have been unrequited. 6s were still about however. I remember in the early 70s, being in school, when Geography class had a film about digging wells in Africa, 5 or 6 of us suddenly heard the drone of 4 Double Wasp engines as a Sterling Airways DC-6B departed Stansted Airport for its Tuesday afternoon visit. What to do, panic set in amongst us, as we scurried towards the window in the dark, and then the lights were suddenly turned on. That's how the blinds are getting damaged, you boys are poking holes in them to see bloody aircraft, shouted poor Mr Townley. He put that on my report, but my parents saw the funny side. I still got detention though. How can a love like that ever be broken......?

I love this video. It just illustrates how these aircraft worked. Almost flawlessly when they were new not these rundown, piston, engine planes. You see on TV today that are barely held together. It also reminds me of a time before I was even alive. I personally am a fan of the early to mid 20th century. The 1920s had great style both in terms of clothes and art deco architecture. The 30s 40s and early 50s was a day of air transport with beautiful piston engine planes like this. And if you ever watch any videos of air travel from that., You were treated as a guest on many foreign airlines still do for their first class. But I have flown several times here in the states. And I felt that I was treated like nothing more like cargo but with legs. The planes are cramped. A couple of them were dirty. And on two flights it was delayed because they had to get the plane actually work.
