Gooneys are comparatively easy to fly and they last forever. That's why they're still around and being used to this day in a fairly large number given the planes' ages. Most are probably re-engined with turbo stuff and modern controls though.

Wow! Thanks guys, this will help preserve this aircraft in the future digitally as well. It's so important to have the pilots perspectives too. Beautiful work, would love to see some more! Walkarounds, Pre flights, Planning, I'm all for it to capture what it feels like to fly a C-47 from start to finish

My father was 22 years old when he became a pilot instructor at Randolph in 1942. In 1944 he went to Missouri and taught pilots how to fly the gliders hauled up by the C-47s. After the war he went to Japan and when the Korean War broke out he was flying C-47s hauling troops and supplies in and out of Korea.

Dad flew a C47 in WWII. One mission over Norway... then the European war ended. Did most of his military flying hauling troops back to the USA. Was based in Puerto Rico... then to Trinidad... (picked up troops ferried from the Azores) then to Miami. Telling us kids stories... into Miami... smoking Cuban cigars in the cockpit... propellers swing blue static arcs... He was only 22. Greatest generation.

It's one of the greatest things in the world, if you don't mind the cramped economy class seats. Often, people with a fear of heights don't get their phobia triggered in an airplane for some reason.

8:59 I have quite a few jumps out of DC3s and to this day it is still my favorite jump ships. It didn't climb as well as other birds and got pretty chilly up at angels 14 or higher but there was just something about them that's hard to explain.

the phrase is called "balls to the wall" because in those old WW2 planes they had little balls on the ends of the throttle/prop/mixture and when shit hit the fan you just shove everything forward. Hence, balls to the (fire) wall.

Do you fly with the c-45 much? I think i may have snapped a pic of the pair, over Sullivan lake, in early may of last year. As a kid, my dad almost bought a deralict AT-11 for us to play in on the farm. He also owned a PT-17 at one time, that he flew.

I wish i could tell the pilot "you know it would be alot better of a time if you weren't such a hardass" lol, im a private historical fighter jet pilot and WW2 historical pilot at the same time, and formations are my thing, having a better look upon things (like your co pilot had) would have been alot better in your situation, reguardless of how stressful it is, unless you know, if your a rookie then if thats the case i totally understand, just kidding buddy haha, still great flying fellow aviators!
