The Indians did all the hard work, including the development of the concept of Zero, the Muslims colonised it, passed it thru THEIR writing system only (i.e. adapting to their letter forms) and so it got passed on. The Arabic part of the name is ONLY because the shape is still roughly like the old arabic forms. The "Hindu-" part of the proper name has of course been dropped in the last few decades as a sop to the bullying from the Muslim world.

@PACIFICNZ I am a Christian and a pacifist, but I would be the first to admit that after the initial missionary movement into Europe (that is, after the "conversion" of Scandinavia and the loss of North Africa) Christendom was a mixture of high culture and invention and barbaric violence. Violence is not the sole prerogative of Islam and calling others "barbaric" would be less hypocritical if Christians were more Christlike. You only have to look at the actions of the "civilised" "Christians" in the last 100 years to see that we can't climb on a moral high horse. Quite apart from the actions of European nations in two world wars, the behaviour of "civilised" troops saving the world from Communism in Vietnam or in the carpet bombing of Laos with DDT comes to mind. Human beings are violent and often barbaric and it is not healthy to project all the violence onto "them" - whether it is the enemy in war, the enemy in Cold War or radical terrorists. (I am not saying that our enemies haven't done evil, whether they are Communists or Islamists - I am just pointing out that all humans are flawed and we can't justify evil on the basis that we are the "good guys". The other half of your question (If it is a question) is easy to answer, not only mathematics and science, including the invention of distillation, but architecture and art, ceramics and textiles - for example, Persian Carpets and Afghan Coats, plus calligraphy and poetry. Omar Khayyam is world-renowned as a poet, for example. Also, if you like to eat Curry, then many dishes in English Restaurants and Takeaways are North Indian (i.e.; Mughal/Muslim) versions of Indian dishes. Biryani is an Indian version of a Persian dish. Every human culture faces similar issues, food and housing and clothing, etc. and every culture is inventive in its own context. Even societies known for a Warrior ethos can still produce beautiful art and literature - look at Japan or ancient China, as well as India itself.

If someone brings up "Arabic numerals" you can blame the Europeans for that. Short version - that number system came from India. Arab traders picked it up as it was the accounting method used by India who did trade with them. Europeans saw this number system when they dealt with Arabs and made the mistake of giving the Arabs credit for this number system when it is that of India.

As far as I know, the decimal positional system was invented by the indian Bhaskara (around 500 dC, I think). From then on, the development of mathematics was incredible. Even more so after Francois Viete invented the algebraic notation with letters that took the place of any particular number.

There is no question about the "al-" words being Arabic, and the Islamic preservation and transmission of the Indian maths. A lot of knowledge in that time in Europe was obtained by translating books from Arabic. As for the developments of new methods of war during Renaissance I think that most of them were developed as much if not more in regard to the infighting between Europeans. The numerical system we use today is the Hindu numerical system. With NO contributions from islam whatsoever. It was transmitted to Europe by the Latin translation of an Arabic book written by al khwarizmi called "On calculations with the Hindu numerals". Even the arabs in those times called it Hindu numerical system as given in the title of the book itself. Our modern maths is built in this system. The Mathematicians who developed it are Brahmagupt, Aryabhatta, Bhaskara I, etc. Same goes for algebra and many other things, they were invented in India and transmitted to Europe by Arab trade. It is very well recorded history. So it is very easy to debunk anyone claiming these were "islamic inventions".

The Crusades killed thousands of Christians (and Muslims and Jews) in their multiple attempts to conquer the holy land that even led to the sacking of Constantinople (Fourth Crusade). Hindu kings burned many Sikh and Muslims alive. It is people and not religion you should blame for that. Additionally, if you knew anything about Islam, you'd know that many Muslim nations were relatively free and developed midway through the last century (Persia/Iran and Afghanistan) and only got extremist after American involvement. Wahabism (Sunni extreme Muslim ideology that's prevalent in Saudi-Arabia, which mandates Sharia law) is a relatively new phenomenon (stems from the early 20th century, almost a millennium after the onset of Islam). Sharia is also a lot younger than Islam itself. The Bible contains almost as much aggressive language as the Quran. There really isn't an inherent quality Islam has that makes it a lot more dangerous. Fact is, there's been too much immigration in Western nations amongst whom there were a lot of Muslims. It is not Islam's fault that cultures that are so different clash. Nor that allowing literal criminals to enter your country leads to more crime. It is the government's fault for the lack of screening. There's plenty of good people to be found amongst Muslims, just like any religion. Trust me, I'm no fan of Islam but you're going way too far.

Arabic speakers can claim they invented or are the root of the word algebra, because it comes from the Arabic verb 'to count' (jabar). Aljabar can refer to a person 'who counts' . But to say they invented Algebra, I would say that it is most likely Persian, Greek and Indian mathematicians.

So as well as the Greeks you can also add in the Egyptians, the Medes, Assyrians, Chaldeans, Zoroastrism and Jews. We in the west still fully understand what the Chinese masters understood. "Arabic numerals", zero, and so on came from India; it is well documented and quite famous how it happened, and which Islamic scholar wrote the book at the time. TLDR: Islam transmitted the Indian knowledge to Europeans who didn't know it before. They didn't invent any of that stuff --- it was ancient knowledge from India. I disagree with the Moslem 'ideological appropriation' of these scholars' achievements, but I also disagree with the opposing camp's tendency to downplay their accomplishments. 1. I disagree with the labeling of those scholars as "Moslems". In fact, many of them leaned toward skepticism/agnosticism, some even atheism. 2. NONE of them were from Arabia, the birthplace of Islam. Instead, they hailed from Persia/Central Asia, and parts of the former Byzantine Empire. Persia's history and traditions of learning rival those of Greece, India and China, and predates Islam by centuries. 3. People who downplay these scholars' accomplishments by overly focusing on earlier contributions from Greek, Indian, or Chinese civilizations either have not studied their work first-hand, or do not understand that science is an ongoing process of building upon prior knowledge.
