I just came across my first carving project I ever carved. I was surprised it turned out as good as it did because I remember it being a complete disaster! Be sure to save those first carvings so you can look back on how far you have come. Enjoy!

I'm overly pleased to say that I made a 75 minute (each way) trip west of Chicago today and bought a FlexCut 3 knife pack with a stick of compound, on sale for $41.29. I had been following along with your videos using nothing but regular chisels I sharpened razor sharp. I bought a CHEAP set of carving tools from Harbor Freight for like $10 and it came with a "V" tool and 2 gouges, along with a couple chisels and that angled chisel you just showed (that I forgot the name of). Granted, those cheap tools took some elbow grease to get sharp blades and I had to remove all the tools from the handles, drill deeper and even, and epoxied them back together properly. They work great now. I had been wondering what the best, minimal tools were and, fortunately, I now have the ones you recommended and then some. You've been my sole inspiration and I watch your videos regularly to learn and just watch.

As I grow older, I realize things that are represented as simple or even backward, like wood carving, are only represented that way by people ignorant of the depth of complexity involved. Mr. Linker is a pretty straightforward guy, but just discussing knives opens a whole world of perspectives and data. The world is SO much bigger and more amazing than we think, there's no reason to live anyone else's idea of a good life.

I started BlackSmith Hobbyist 4 years ago, and I now can make a knife better than intro level knife and most chisels and not selling my knives, but my BlackSmith Hobbyist products are for myself and love ones. Nothing for sale but just letting people know hobby can help other hobbies now I can make handles fit better. I wish companies would market over size handles on a line of knives to be trimmed to fit by the purchasers to trim to fit.That is going to be my next build. Thanks 👍

Great Video - I started making walking sticks after the first lockdown and from there started whittling and wood carving - I just started with a Benchmade folder, sandpaper, and wood stain. Eventually I got more tools, but happy with what I have and every day I do a little bit of work, even if it's 5 or ten minutes, I get projects done. Thanks for more inspiration.

Excellent... Info shared Doug, When I first started carving, MY Dad started me out with a modified blade on a Old Timer Pocket knife... I learned the basic with that and then moved into dedicated carving knifes, "V" tools and gauges... I feel you are spot on with start with the basic's....Be it a pocket knife or a carving knife... Just start and let you mind and time go by in some really good relaxation time. Once you learn which way you want to carve then invest in other tools. Carving beginners like myself will be able to review a shorter more detailed video of a specific area they may have trouble with. My nemesis is still carving faces. Three years ago I had a notion I'd like to carve an axe handle. Bought a Mora 106 carving knife. It was about $40. That fall I carved and finished the entire axe handle with that one knife. Since then I've become hooked on wood carving and bought many specialized tools. The Mora 106 is my primary tool still. I gave my original to my grand daughter, who took an interest in carving. The Mora 106 has a laminated blade that takes and holds an edge well. The handle is comfortable and the length and profile is good for rough to fairly close carving. Thanks Doug for another great video. Thumbs up!

Not endorsing anyone but the Flexcut starter set was economical and I really like the handles. Already had a few strops so I was almost ready to go. I had a complete wood carving X-Acto knife set and almost immediately realized that that was not the answer for real wood carving. Thanks Doug for your tutorials and introducing me back into wood carving a year ago ! Great timing for me with winter on the doorstep.

Your knowledge of your own tools shows in how you know where the sharp bits are on each one and you point out features and handle two and three at a time. Just getting interested in starting carving. I've been woodworking all my life as a top hobby but after watching several of your videos, I am determined to be able to carve Santa's and more for my grandkids. My first carving was made with the blade on a Leatherman tool and it was a spatula and i had a hole down the center where the pith was. (slap forehead and roll eyes!) the second thing i did was make a plain stick for stirring bread dough. I saw a fellow once carve donkeys and dogs and such and thought that would be interesting to try. Thanks for all your great videos Doug.

Doug is why I love my 2 blade barlow it's nostalgic and got me a pen blade for quill sharpener and larger blade in one package that folds and uk legal carry no way I'm carrying a,fixed blade could injure me in pocket and not classified as legal here in uk it must be 3inches must not lock or be fixed blades so a swiss army knife or my barlow are legal carry 👍🦊🐾🇮🇹🇺🇲

I’ve got a 12 year old son who has expressed an interest in whittling, carving, and woodworking in general. He has an “ozark trail” pocketknife that was given to him a couple years ago and he likes to carve at sticks. We bought some wood that was supposed to be for carving at our local craft store but it was kind of expensive, I thought. (about $7 for a smallish piece.) but we got home and he had a hard time making any cuts at all in it. We figured it just needed to be sharpened, and my grandad actually gave him something to sharpen it with, which seemed to work really well. I watched some of the videos you have on basic tools needed where you say that you really only need one knife to get started. We watched another video where you carved a little wizard/gnome/Santa guy, and I think you said you could even do that with a pocket knife. It seems like you can go as fancy or simple as you want. My question is this. Being that he is only 12 and just now expressing he may have an interest in this, I don’t want to sink too much money into this just yet. But I was thinking of getting him some basic stuff he might enjoy for Christmas to play around with. What would you recommend for him?

I just started carving about a year ago and I know what you mean about collecting tools. In a year I accumulated at least 4 or 5 knivex (I have 2 I use and only to save stopping time) and all kinds of v tools and gouges. I even bought these eyeball shaped Chisels because I struggle with eyes (they don't work). Part of it is figuring out what works but mostly, nobody explained what you really need. Until now. Thanks Doug. Been looking forward to this series for a while.

I subscribe to a lot of channels on different interests. This is, without doubt, my favorite carving channel.
