Hey Doug! I'm in construction of my own carving room! I used to work every day as a young man for years. Ended up going through a life changing workplace accident that keeps me from being mobile. My friend actually got me into carving in 2012. So nice to see you're ideas and carvings! Definitely changed my terrible depression into art. It is rewarding in the end.

I traveled to Elbigenalb, Austria in 1998, to the Geisler-Moroder School of Woodcarving; where I learned a very simple painting technique that I still use on my figurines today. Basically, when the carving is prepared to paint, I use simple watercolors (the kind you can purchase in Walmart, for example), and I tone the reds, yellows, blues, and greens with a bit of brown paint or brown stain to give it a more antique appearance. The way I paint is one section at a time (arm, leg, hat, etc.) with a heavy color. Then I take a damp (not wet) cloth and wipe the color off in that section - just enough to leave the darker color in the folds, cracks, and crevices. Once the carving is completely painted and dried, I take 000 steel wool and go over the entire piece - lightly. This removes just a tad more of the color and gives it an old appearance. After I clean the carving from any steel wool residue, I go over the entire piece with "Antik Wachs" (from Germany/Austria, where I live). It is "Antique wax" in English. I wait for about 10 hours or overnight, and then buff the carving out, giving it a nice, protective sheen.

Nice Video, I use the Clapmann's on my wooden cutting boards in my kitchen as well as my wooden handles steak knives. Something else I sometimes use is the Shoe Polish in the flat tins. Different colours of brown so it kind of stains and seals it in one application. When its dry you can buff with a shoe brush, Don't know if people still polish leather shoes anymore. I inherited my dad's shoe polishing brushes which I love using.

I'm just starting a new venture. Not in carving, but in designing flat wood. I wasn't sure about sealing it first. My ex used to paint walls so I knew enough about paint to be dangerous and cautious. I saw a sign in a laundromat that looked like pieces of an old fence. the top piece said; 'I'm lonely' the second board said 'Looking for a sole mate' the third board had 4 clothes pins glued to it to hang a stray sock. I loved it and want to make some as gifts. Your information was helpful.

All good stuff Doug. I like looking back at how my transition went from start to now. I used to paint figures for my friends that played role-playing games. It was always fun and creative. I have seen a lot of nice art paints, brushes, and finishes at stores like Tuesday Morning, Ross, TJ Maxx. It looks like a good deal if you have an application for it. Looking forward to the next video.

Doug, enjoying your series. Just talking/trying to add, here. I don't like the shiny look either. But, if you put a clear matte sealer on your paint, before putting on your antiquing methods, the paint stays clean, and the antiquing only stays in the corners. Prevents that just dirty look. I prefer the craft paint water base solutions, over the spray on. They seal the paint better. Don't worry about all the foam, scrub it on, and roll it in a towel between your hands. Then gently brush some more on carefully, over your larger flatish areas. Also, I like hitting the corners/high spots, with a flat sanding sponge. To add wear marks for the rustic aged look. Doing this after your clear coat, and before the antiquing method, or at the very end, will yield different results. Depending on the products you use, if things do get a little shiny, break out the Scotch Brite at the very end. Also. the very lightly splatter on some black with a toothbrush trick. With all that said, if your goal of finishing is, it looks 80 years old right off the bench. I do this all the time. This is not for the new "clean" look.

Wonderful information, thank you so much! While I am an old lady new to carving I spent several years painting tabletop wargaming figures. One thing I would tell folks new to painting figures is that "staining" or "antiquing" hides a multitude of sins. If you know you are going to be staining/antiquing the piece then little mess-ups at crease lines (such as where a shirt meets the neck, things like that) are not something to fret. The stain will fill the crease, and you won't see that bit of flesh-colored paint on the shirt portion, or the white edge of an eyeball straying a small bit onto the eyelid. The other thing is that even the least expensive brush will last you a good bit if you make sure to keep it clean between uses.
