Doug, thanks for making this video. I brought my whittling knife on vacation with me. I made mine whilst sitting at the ocean. I gave it away to an older gentleman that was just sitting, watching me whittle.

This will take a minute but I want to thank you. I haven't watched one of your vids in a while because my music channel took off and I have been spending all of my waking hours working on it and have not had time to carve in a while. And then about two and a half years ago, silly me decided to do a live stream sing along show not realizing the enormous amount of time it would take one person to produce a show, but do it we did. Though I love music and making video, I had reached burn out a few months back. Today I saw this vid in my suggestions and watched. I had forgotten how much I had learned to love carving, largely because of you, Mary May, and Paul Sellers. I started when I watched Paul sharpen a chisel and carve a spoon. One day while waiting for some glue to dry, I had an old dull 3/4" chisel that I knew I couldn't make much worse so I tried sharpening it. It worked! I got it so sharp I could just push it thru the wood. Had a piece of scrap laying around and began to carve a spoon. I loved it! Then Mary May. I learned from her about relief carving never thinking I could learn to carve in 3d, I just loving carving the wood. But then I found you. I think you carved a simple wood spirit if I remember correctly and you made us aware that there was a technique to it. I ordered the OCC model knife that you are using in this video at your recommendation on one of your other vids and that has become my favorite knife. It has never been on a stone, just a strop and it is incredible. So now that I mostly do reruns on my show I'm having some time to get back to carving. Thank you so much for your influence and friendly presentations that are so pleasant to watch and always with helpful tips and tricks so to speak. My first love will of course always be music, but I do love me some carving now and then thanks to you, Mary and Paul!! It's a great stress reliever.

I've been a whittler for alotta yrs. I got into it because of my granddad, who exclusively used a pocket knife, and carved on sticks, branches and even scrap lumber. I've done the same. Only until 10 yrs ago, did I even know about fix bladed/handled whittling knives and basswood. You've given me alotta ideas and ways to make my whittles much more detailed than just simple whittles. I've even given the fixed bladed knives and basswood a try. I'll be honest, I didn't much care for those knives much. Maybe it's because I've always just used a pocket knife. Basswood is excellent carving wood, but really love carving on inexpensive and easily available poplar dowels. Carves just fine. Still enjoy collecting brush trimmings to whittle on as well. I haven't thought of lighthouses before, but I'm gonna give these a go myself. Thanks Doug for another simple project.

Hey Doug, thanks for the videos - really cool. Very new Whittler here 👍 Had a go at the lighthouse with the dowel and I made something I’m very pleased with for a first go. I was using a Rough Rider Whittler, nice knife ! However, since then I’ve bought a Flexcut knife - what a game changer ! It slices through the dowel (and basswood) like a butter knife. I get the feeling it will make the learning experience much more enjoyable. Since watching my dad change electric plugs with a kitchen knife, and struggling :), I always said I would use the right tool for the job. The Flexcut seems to be that proof. Look forward to more videos, Doug 👍

I've been away from carving for over a year but long to come back to it and your videos are helping me get back to it. I love watching your tutorials and listening to how you guide us along and offer humor as well! I also greatly appreciate the entry-level projects you offer for those of us who are not yet seasoned. This project is especially of interest to me, as I plan to carve a lighthouse for a friend of mine whose mom just passed away unexpectedly last week, and her parents loved lighthouses. Thank you for sharing your talent with us and for providing us with such a variety of awesome projects to try!

Doug I could easily see this being your next “easy owl” tutorial. Very approachable for beginners and can help teach consistency and symmetry with stop cuts and slicing cuts. I’ve made a few similar looking lighthouses in the past and one thing I’ve been wanting to try is embedding a light and carving through the “glass” (think vertical supports around a void like a ball in a cage). Great video sir
