@@DoctorChained hey doctor I've been playing poker 40 years and I somewhat agree with you however I also subscribe to the newer way to play poker using solvers and flopzilla and you say that this hand smashes the Flop 5.5% of the time yes that's true two pair better but it also flops a flush draw 11% of the time and a straight draw 10% of the time so 21% of the time it flops a flush or a straight draw and five and a half percent it smashes a flop so 26% of the time Garrett is going to continue with this hand... Mike could have sized his 4 bet a little higher and Garrett is getting about 13 to 1 implied odds on the call preflop... if Mike only had about 20 or 25,000 would be a terrible call but I think anything 40000 or higher and you feel like you can stack the guy if you hit your hand then it's okay play.. Doug, thanks for covering this hand. This hand does a great job showcasing why including 4bet semi-bluffs like 67s, 89s, 9Ts, TJs, and JQs at low frequencies is so important for your range. If you only 4bet Aces and Kings, this board just has you crushed. You will have 3 combinations of a set of kings, and 6 combinations of Aces. That means that 2/3 of the time you are drawing dead, and 1/3 of the time you have about 25% equity. If you only 4bet Aces and Kings, though, I do think calling down is fine with these aces is fine. If you only 4bet aces and kings, I would take this line when facing the turn $10k bet: *3 combos of AA with a spade - FOLD. *3 combos of AA without a spade: call. Call river if there is not a spade. In this case there was a spade so you would fold river. Your opponent can have hands like AJs, AQs, ATs which are pair and a flush draw or Straight draw + a flush draw. *3 combos of a set of kings - Jam turn. Worst case you have 25% shot to hit a boat.
@DoctorChained5 жыл бұрын
Also, if you're not results-oriented this is a good example of not being deep enough to call preflop with 76s. You're not flopping nearly enough to justify a call with those stack sizes. Doug Polk is right, you should just fold.

I’m not sure what the turn raise was, it seems a good board to check the flop with aces - Nut advantage is def in the 3bet call range, a few sets etc. I thought checking aces there was good. Then on turn it seems that line went well of track. Least it was a heads up pot. Tonight in cash game I seen a guy basically do this exact same thing on a wet board in a 6 way pot with aces 500 blinds deep vs 2 big stacks. He folded turn after putting in about 50% stack.

Okay, genuine question. Why is Garrett's call "bad"... I can't construct it to make it "bad". Depending on assumptions, I can make it VERYVERY slim negative EV (like betting $3100 to win $3000 kind of thin) but those are under some pretty tough assumptions (super tight range by Mike, Garrett acts like a calling station for draws, etc). If we assume there's even a snow ball's chance in hell that Mike takes this line with stuff broader than QQ+, AK suited then it seems pretty solid from Garrett here. I'd like to point out that Upswing poker's website says that the open range in the lojack is (44+, A2s+, K9s+, Q9s+, J9s+, T8s+, 97s+, 87s, 76s, 65s, 54s, 43s, ATo+, KJo+, QJo). How many of those hands does he 4 bet? Doesn't he occasionally 4bet a fair number of them (like almost all the pairs?). I think a lot of the discussion about the decision assumes that the commentators during the clip are right and that Mike's only range is QQ+, AK suited and that just seems like wayyyy too tight a range for this.

Doug Polk, can you just clarify the 72 hour flash sale promotion LAB9. Does it mean for me as a returning lab customer, I will only be charged $9 total for a month's subscription? Thanks.

Pretty sad that helmuth has to stake him to play this game. He is broke just like most “pros” Sad lifestyle

A buddy of mine is a big local player in Vegas. Not what you consider a pro but he told me pretty much every "pro" is broke. None play with their own money. He said some are even millions in debt
@davidriley96215 жыл бұрын
Yep. You can call yourself a “pro” if you don’t have a real job. And if you play in enough tourneys you will cash in some to show career earnings.... doesn’t mean you are making any money. These guys are glorified degenerate gamblers who are borrowing money and bring staked to play. But media won’t report truth , it’s sad

Its just that mike is always playing so tight and predictable preflop that his hand is face-up when he 4 bets, so Garrett can just fold the flop (risking 3000) or getting it all in since mike is probably not folding aces easily. Garrett read the situation perfectly
@DeathByOstrich5 жыл бұрын
its very interesting that Phil was staking Mike. just ponder the unethical dilemma's that would arise at a poker table with that type of arrangement.

Everyone knew.. jungleman also had half of another player that night.

After decades of poker, Phil still considers it “weird ***t” when anyone cracks aces. Meh, just reload another 50k and keep playing. Personally I might have just called Garret down, but I am not a deep stack player and 100bb is easy to put at risk.

Basically, the best play for Mike would have been to Insta-fold once that awful flop was dealt.
@Mitjitsu Жыл бұрын
Yes, 89T and 9TJ are about the worst flops you could hope to see with AA. However, he has to at least see the turn. When his opponent continues to bet when the turn card should most definitely have helped Mike, then he should have seriously have considered folding at that point.

Can anyone tell me what happened next cos I saw a video by Doug where Mike had enough chips to pay Phil and he did pay hem (in the middle of a hand even) and still looked like he had a healthy stack left ?

There is an old saying (not sure if it's still applicable in "new world" poker...with pocket aces, you either win a small pot or lose a large pot. Matusow basically played his hand face up after the four bet...a recipe for disaster in deep stack poker, but fine in limit or short stack.
@Brandon-hg7ic Жыл бұрын
I think they used to say that because they would play their Aces like this 🤣
@williambryant56815 жыл бұрын
The thing about playing pocket pairs is the best you can get is 3 or 4 of a kind and if they have suited connectors a straight or flush they can beat your 3 of a kind
@Mitjitsu Жыл бұрын
If you get to see a turn and river a suited connector plays better against big pairs, but if only get to see the flop before deciding to commit yourself, then you're better off having a pocket pair.

Anyone know any good new Hold’Em Books? I’m definitely more of an advanced player, but I stopped taking it seriously like 7 years ago and I’m looking to pick up a book that isn’t outdated. I already got No limit Hold’em Poker for Advanced Players (Matt Janada) but I don’t feel like I learned much. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That's a pissed off smile. Idk why he'd lend matusow money in the first place, he can't play with the better competition these days. Sitting around waiting for aa and kk VS a good lag like Garrett not always profitable imho.

Yeah i agree with Phil calling 5,000 dolares with 7 6 suited i would not have call that because 9 times out of 10 you'll get fucked!
