I snowshoed into the White Mts to film a solo survival challenge. For this trip I only had a wool blanket (no sleeping bag, no tent, no tarp). My tools were- hatchet and pocket knife. My fire kit- tinder box, steel, and sharp rock.

Doug, what an inspirational message and video! You mention each person fighting their own battles all over the world, and you are so right. We all have our own challenges, but with the right attitude, and God in our hearts, we can overcome our demons!! Thank you for your wonderful videos and positive and grounded outlook - it's infectious and has struck a chord with me! Warm greetings from South Africa!

Pastor Doug, as your colleague in our Lord's ministry, I have been praying for a safe adventure. According to national weather on our local forecasts, your area has been hit again with another North-East wintry blast! Hopefully, you and your family, along with other residents of your area, will remain safe. Our prayers are with each & ALL of you!. I look forward to the Premiere on Thursday.May God bless you, each & all! -Pastor George

Doug, as I watch I think of more questions, hope you don’t mind? Can you hang your pot with parachute cord or does it have to be wire? Also, have you ever tried the Siberian log fire, seems they put out the heat but don’t require much maintenance? Or one of the fires that stacks logs between two sets of poles, maybe they self feed? Love your channel, keep the videos coming when you safely can. Take care.

Doug, somewhere I have my Dads old wool blanket from WW2. I love how God created all these natural materials that in some ways are still superior to anything man makes. Cotton is such a versatile product, and for me, there’s still nothing like a cotton T-shirt, and who can argue about wool being one of the greatest clothing products still after 1000’s of years. I just saw Woniya on Buckskin revolution talking about the wool pants she used to win Alone as the first woman. They were high quality, hand made, hundreds of dollars but when your life is on the line, what’s a few bucks, right. And let’s face it, I’ve never seen a sheep shiver, lol. Plus I think of the Buffalo. Their coat is so thick they can face way below zero and blizzard winds, and they go through with ease. Thanks for sharing your adventures

@@jerrytalley802 I've used just paracord to hang a pot. The bail of the pot gives you some distance from the fire. If I didn't babysit it, then I would sometimes find it starting to melt. I worked at different plastics factories years ago, and learned about various toxic chemicals. These days I have a chain with clips used as a lanyard for my keys and pocket knife. If they fall out of my pocket, they are still attached by the chain. Then at camp I have the chain to hang the pot. I'm not a believer in a lot of the Siberian log fires etc as seen on the internet. It looks good in a video. It's not going to work for people unless they know how to build a good bed of coals. That's the real secret to a long-burning fire, IMO. It's a lot more work then it looks like in a video. If you have a really good bed of coals then almost anything will burn. Large diameter logs take longer to burn.

Being conditioned to the cold is worth at least 10F degrees of "warmth". ever heard of Bill moreland. ? He spent 13 years in the Idaho wilds, in the 1930's. He had nothing more than a single wool blanket, a hunk of tarp, a few hooks and some line, a pocket knife, flint and steel, a skillet, a coffee pot, and the clothes that he stood in! His last 2 years, he'd stolen a single shot 22lr rifle and 50 rds of ammo from a Ranger's cabin. He killed a deer per month with it until the Park rangers FINALLY caught him.. He spent his winters inside of hollow logs. He ended-up pulling some of his own teeth with a slipknot in the fishing line and a springy branch! Prior to the rifle, he'd been taking town phone wire that was strung between the fire towers and snaring deer with it. That's what got the Rangers hunting him I think that some ranger fell sorry for him and left the 22 where he knew Bill would get it He'd made a key that let him get into the cabins and get the food stored there, but there was little such food and it would not be replaced all winter. Today, people "think" that their tough, but the generation of the Depression and WW2 has them beat by a country mile!.

In high school survival class we went up to the mountain snow for the afternoon. We got into pairs and were told to dig a snow shelter. After 4 hours very few shelters were complete. So unless you have done it before don’t expect it to be straight forward. There was 1 team that made an amazing cave. Mine never got finished but I got an A. I think that because I made steak stir fry for lunch and shared it with the teacher. :)

You dealt with the conditions well. A second night would have seen you far more comfortable. I really don't like the Arcturis wool blanket. It was actually the half blanket I got, so not a big financial loss. Turns out I'm allergic. Causes breathing irritations. The blanket is made with recycled wool and so, every blanket is different, but they do tend to have much shorter fibres and a lot of loose fibres. Having shorter fibres does affect its insulation value. I prefer the Wooley Mammoth, though it's quite expensive now. Though 80% wool, It's Merino wool. Very warm. None of us are perfect. We walk by faith and not by sight. Keep our eyes on the Lord. Choosing adventure the way you do is likely you rejecting comfort and riches, that you suffer in adversity with our brothers and sisters facing persecution all around the world.

Arcturis suck! Get a vintage Horner or Hudson Bay from the 30s or 40s... it'll cost you but the damn things are near a quarter inch thick and 100% wool. I love mine and plan to be buried in it when I die.

We just lost a young, girl 22 years, avid SOLO hiker out here in California on Mt. Baldy, 10K peak. She set out at 2pm [sunset 5pm], snow with a horrendous rain system rolling in. Family lost contact with her at 4pm and it took a couple days for avalanche conditions to subside and permit SAR to safely go in. Drone operator spotted her body and she was recovered. Probably didn't have skills/knowledge to build a snow cave and get out of the weather.

Trapped AIR is what insulates you from the cold, wind, dampness. The value that wool, goose down, or debris offers you is not in and of themselves. All that such materials can do is hold-apart the membranes that are on both sides of them, so that there's a layer of trapped air all around you. Such materials also prevent air currents moving in the area between the membranes.. A blanket or woobie is MUCH more effective at keeping you warm if you have a non-permeable poncho or tarp around the insulative material. Having a reflective tyvek bivy around you and then a plastic envelope around the bivy, holding those layer's apart with a hammock and two ridgelines, gives you the layer of trapped air, without the bulk/weight of the "stuffings". If you DO stuff dry, soft debris between the bivy and the "envelope', it does help keep you warmer, because such materials help keep down radiant heat-loss.and ensure that the two membranes dont touch, anywhere. The debris also stops air currents from moving between your membranes.

You forgot to mention warm clothing and boots plus the food you brought with you, a good display of skills though, however it would have been a different story in a heavy snowstorm with driving winds, doable but much more difficult, why I would prefer to always have a large tarp with me. You are younger Doug, wait till you hit 75, that's where I'm at. Sorry Doug, but you have to accept the fact that there are people that are your enemies because they choose to be and would kill you or harm you just for sport, that is something you cannot change.

Correct, I said you forgot to mention the warm clothes you were wearing, I did not say you weren't wearing warm clothes. thanks just the same and like it or not you do have enemies as there are people who would kill you for no reason, I didn't say anyone was trying to kill you just that there are those who would givin the chance, you saw what happen in Israel didn't you and what is going in Ukraine? Sorry, but you do have enemies just like everyone else and it is not because you have done anything to them to cause them to be your enemies, it is just the way things are.@@DougShoeBushcraft

the streams in the mountains are very shallow and freeze solid, so the fish all migrate down to the lakes or they go dormant in the deepest pools that they can find. This makes ice fishing very unlikely to be productive.Fish are 8% bodyfat, (live weight) but to get that fat, you either have to eat the skins and heads, or boil those parts and skim the fat off of the surface of the water, which is difficult to arrange.

👍👍👍 .. nice. A good demonstration of Basic Skills .. the relevant boxes duly ticked 😊. Using existing Natural Features to enhance a Shelter (properly clothed for the conditions, somewhere to sleep on, in and under) .. the '5 C's' .. Shelter / Hydration / Nutrition and with an additiona external Heat Source, all taken care of. That said, to reiterate (even if only to drum it into my my head 😏) .. one should never be caught knowingly or willingly in such situations (or any at that) inadequately prepared. Also, in no way detracting from your, Doug's setup, with the Technology at our disposal in this day and age, it is noteworthy how very little 'additionals' would add value to such a situation .. i.e. .. Tarp, Closed Cell Foam Pad, Fixed Blade Knife, Folding Saw and such. Yes, 'how much is too much' and conversely, 'how little is too little'? All in all, an excellent Post .. and the Words at the end, Inspirational! Thank you for that .. take care ..

Deer have almost no fat on them and in the winter, they have none and their meat is really tough and dry, about 600 calories per lb. You need 3000 calories per day to keep from losing weight, even when just "holed-up" in a shelter Moreland was a small, wiry man, so he had no body fat to lose or to help insulate him from the cold.

Building shelters takes too much time and calories, and the noise and fire smoke and light are too likely to cause problems with other humans. I've done this sort of thing for real too many times to consider it to be fun. You wont catch me out there unless it's shtf or I'm testing some new item or idea for shtf. When I have adequate clothing, the bivy and plastic envelope are enough for sleeping in any conditions that I'd voluntarily be in. I've found that it doesn't matter if your winter clothing has absorbed a bit of body moisture during the day, IF you have 2 sets of clean, dry, polypropylene longjohns between you and the clothing. I use the wiggy's net longjohns at all times when it's below about 50F, and use the other pairs only for sleeping. /The net longjohns hold your other clothing away from your skin enough to help reduce the amount of dampness that they absorb. Brisk movement is worth nearly 20F degrees, so when I'm not in the sleeping gear and it's cold, I get to hustling. I CAN wear the sleep-shelter gear, either as a poncho or tightly wrapped around me, as another layer of protection. I"m not into sub 0F stuff at all. Cold has very nearly killed me several times, and I'm not giving it another shot at me. Pneumonia killed two of my older brothers.

Hike a little further into the woods if you want to avoid people. When bushwacking in NH, ME, VT I very rarely encounter another person. If you are within sight of the road, etc then there's your problem. It would be different if authorities were actively looking for you, or you were a soldier at war, etc. Thankfully there is no war in New England currently and I'm not a wanted man.

Oh that looks like fun. Since I'm 72 now and have had six heart attacks and also have spinal stenosis I no longer get out as much as I once did. However i still like to live dangerously. My wife of 42 years died 3 years ago. Its been a lonely existence. Thats soon to be over. I asked a lady to marry me. Yep. She said yes! Thats dangerous enough but when I consider that shes only 31....now thats going to be very interesting. Now, some may be asking why would a woman that young marry such a codger? I asked myself same then i asked her. She knows im poor. She just smiled and said "I love you old man and from now on you're mine". How can i argue with that? Why would I? Got a camping as well as a life companion again. God is good. He may close one door but opens another. Im gonna marry this gal and take her to the bush with me. She says shes down with it and wants to learn. I'm not going to hit her with something so intense as this though. Not for awhile anyway. She has much to learn but you should see this lil gal pitch a tarp and she's aces with a knife and starting a fire. She is smart.

But it has been used even in recent times. I heard the story of a man whose car got stuck in a blizzard. He decided to walk the few miles home. Great video as always Doug. I was surprised you didn't create more of a roof or close the back in more. I guess that if it's not blowing a gale there's no need, but me... being as pedantic as I am, I couldn't leave it that way. 😂 How was the canned stew? Some of them can be pretty good. If you're hungry enough it probably doesn't matter though. Anyway, thanks again for the great video. One week to go until my hip surgery. I'll drop you an email when I'm out of surgery and let you know how it went.

I ran out of time and energy on the roof construction. What I ended up with was a little roof to huddle under if it snowed. I was out of the wind on 3 sides from digging into the snow drift.

Hatchet. Pocket knife. Bush pot. Wool blanket. And what ever food brought. Not a bad emergency shelter. Good fast fire. On track. At a bad boy center called thistle dew. They give you some snare wire . That very Pocket knife and one can of food. Your out there for one to two weeks. Oh you do get one blanket and that is your haver sack as well. Winter you get a boy scout Hatchet. You are expected to find your food and make shelter. You get graded on your progress. For them it means early release.

Somewhat mild winter here and not much snow (for NH). I was excited that there was enough snow in the White Mts for snowshoeing. Yes, I'd say down is warmer if you keep it dry. IMO wool performs better if damp or wet. For practical purposes, I like the synthetics these days. I generally use wool for nostalgia, demonstrating old ways, etc. It works very well. The only issue for me is wool is heavy.

I'm curious why you didn't make a hemlock or pine bow roof? You're much more experienced than I ,so apparently you didn't find it necessary, what would have happened if it snowed or freezing rain? I do enjoy watching your videos though.

In some areas I can't cut live trees. If it snowed or freezing rain then I had enough roof to huddle under. The roof would have been bigger but I ran out of time and physical energy. On had about half a day to build the shelter and gather firewood etc while also filming

The video would have been a very good learning video if it matched the title. Wool Blanket ONLY, no tent, no tarp, no sleeping bag. You failed to mention in the title you would have snowshoes, hatchet, knife, fire starter, electric heated jacket, big pot for boiling snow to water, canned food, jerky. When you really do an overnighter with just a wool blanket in that cold of weather, let me know, I would be impressed to see that. You didn't have a tent, very true, no tarp or no sleeping bag, but you had enough equipment the thrive for one night, not survive. Just very disappointed the title didn't match the video. I do hope you had fun, I love camping in the winter, hate camping in the summer due to the heat. just title your video's better. Be safe and keep up being healthy and having fun. God bless you.

All the gear you mention is in the title, description, thumbnail, and/or opening few seconds of the video. The one exception is the electric heated jacket which wasn't brought on the solo survival challenge. It is seen in the closing of the video after I have returned from the mountains.

In a survival situation I would never hand water or snow over my fire. One small bump or wind could put your fire out and wet your wood.
@DougShoeBushcraft
@DougShoeBushcraft 7 ай бұрын
a large fire wouldn't go out if you dumped a bush pot of water on it. I've never had an accident like that in real life. I know it wouldn't put a large fire out because I have intentionally doused fires with water thousands of times. If you had just got your fire going and then somehow dumped the entire bush pot of water on it then you could put out your fire. Personally, I'd do it and just be careful.
