Hi Margaret, Mike here. Thank you so much for this video tour. You put in much more information than I could have imaged, thank you. Hats off to the "artisans" who made all the item displayed in the castle, from the furniture, curtains, tapestries swards, armor and everything in between, top notch work. Margaret, must say I love your subtle sense of humor, makes for a fun watch Your Dunkirk segment gave me chills, really. The UK has such a exciting, at times dark but dynamic history, you are luckily to live there.

This was an amazing tour. I felt like I was there in person and that I had enough time to take in all the wonderful bits and pieces of the castle. Your narration was superb! But the absolute best part was your telling of the Miracle of Dunkirk. It’s one of my favorite stories from history and you captured it with such emotion. At first the hair on the back of my neck stood on end; then I had goosebumps; and finally I was weeping. What an adventure this video is!! Bravo!!!

Margaret, I’m glad to have found your videos. Your tours contain so much background and explanatory information - they are great. You know your stuff. I thoroughly enjoy your soft voice and the smoothness of your video. In this one, you apologized a couple of times for the jerkiness because of wind gusts, but I didn’t notice any problem. I visited Dover Castle in 2018 so I remember seeing some of the things you showed, but I didn’t have your narration which adds so much. I do recall climbing up the stairs to the top of the tower (the staircase that you took down). I had to stop two or three times on the way up to be able to make it to the top. Whew!

Not knowing that hundreds of years later their carving would be seen and shown to millions through a computer screen. Sorry, I mean`t to add an additional piece of information. On the top of the cliffs, some distance from the castle, during the Napoleonic War, Cmr Twist created a triple stairwell, making for a deep shaft, which enabled a large number of troops, in only minutes, to descend to the bottom of the cliffs in the event of a landing on the beach by French soldiers. It`s an incredible feat of engineering vision, even though I don`t believe it was ever put to use - but brilliant even so :)

Every day from 1984 to 1989, my parents would drive me to school via the Upper Road past the Castle from St Margaret's Bay and back so this obviously brings back memories. In the early 1980s, there was a cafeteria in one of these 18th C barracks before National Heritage started to charge visitors for entry. I also vaguely remember our school taking us for a visit, must have been 1985-86. In 1985, the Castle stood for the Tower of London for the movie Lady Jane starring Helena Bonham Carter, Cary Elwes and Patrick Stewart. Many locals were used as extras, only requirement, to have a beard....Amusing to think the castle was built by a Frenchman, Henri Plantagenet. His wife, Alienor d'Aquitaine and him were French! People forget that!

Wow, Margaret. This history of Dover Castle was riveting. From King Henry II to World War II i was on the edge of my seat. To think that there was a well that had lead pipes to distribute water must have seemed like state of the art innovation. The deep wells shows ingenuity and anticipation of any siege. Brilliance of planning. The sinking tragedy of the Birkenhead (sp?) echoes the future horror of the Titanic. And looking up at the ancient lighthouse as a bird flies past is magical. But what has fired my imagination is King Henry II spending the night alone in supplication at the tomb of Thomas Becket. What a one-man play this would make! Thank you for this wonderful tour suggested by Mike. You are my Alison Weir of KZbin.🎉🎉🎉🎉

What a great tour! Reminded me of when my late Sister and I toured Wales and Scotland in the 1980s. We had cousins in Cardiff and were able to visit the house where my Dad lived when he was a child. I had always intended to take my wife and daughter after I retired. Unfortunately time and crippling back surgeries have prevented my traveling. I now confine my touring to KZbin. I echo my fellow KZbin visitors in praise of your video. Your presentation was flawless and you voice enhanced the whole adventure. I look forward to additional tours in the future. Thank you!

That’s an excellent video. Before Dover Castle was run by English Heritage the public had free access to the grounds with only the castle keep and tunnels having controlled access. As a child in the 60’s the castle grounds were my playground, I wandered and explored all over those grounds and knew them well but you went places I never did go and was not even aware of! I am rarely impressed by such videos about Dover castle but you managed it. By the way, Dover is a town not a city - the only thing I can pick you up on!!!
@barrywilliams5515 Жыл бұрын
I should add that my father served in the Army reserves at the castle after national service in 1949. He was in charge of that first aid station in your video. He is still alive now, in Dover, age 92 always telling his stories of those days.

Thank you so much for this and the other tour videos! I don’t understand why you don’t have more subscribers, because this is real quality stuff. I was curious about what the shouting in the background was at the 27 minute mark (although it’s not that serious a thing and I’m just weird about what catches my attention and distracts me sometimes, but anyhoo…) so I skimmed through the comments in case someone else had asked about it (yeah, I probably have too much free time), and I just want to say that you shouldn’t worry about what some of these people complain about; the audio is fine, and I think your voice is pleasant. Also, if anyone teases you about your eyelashes, they simply have a problem with being rude and keeping their judgements to themselves. It’s amazing how inappropriate people can be, especially using the internet. I’m sure you know all that, but I just wanted to reassure you that they are almost certainly in the minority and, in my opinion, don’t deserve the kind responses you took your time with. That was classy of you. I’ve been looking for exactly these kinds of videos for so long. Thank you for putting in the effort to create an immersive tour that isn’t rushed and is full of interesting, detailed information. It temporarily satisfies my longing to travel and see these places myself, so it’s really appreciated.

Ahhh - this was just the BEST comment to read! Thank you so much :) You've absolutely made my day (month) with your kind words. I'm working on another video now so hopefully I'll have something new for you in the not so distant future! You also had me cracking up at your side comments about finding out what that screaming was. Obviously it's been a few months since I was there but they had this big video screen in one of the old doorways and it displayed 'King Henry III' and he's telling stories about the castle on loop. I THINK that's the shouting - he was quite mad at points..!
