This is excellent! Off the back of your comments about early Coldplay on the ‘Reckoner’ reaction, I ended up listening to their first two albums over the past week, and then in full-on early 2000s mode I listened to my other two favourite bands of the time…Elbow and Doves! So this is timed perfectly :)

Absolutely fantastic reaction guys. Up there with the best I’ve seen (and I’ve seen many many hundreds). The respect of their artistry you showed is to be commended. The thing is guys their debut blows this album out of the water (Lost Souls). You gotta do it. And yes their latest is also brilliant.

Man, this took me back to being a 17-year-old in 2002. I adore this album and it's still in my top 10 albums to this day. Crazy to think this is exactly 20-years-old in a couple weeks! I was one of those buying this on day of release and getting it to No. 1 in the UK; the soundtrack to my 2002. I came across Doves on a football show in the UK called 'Soccer AM' who would play a lot of the songs off their first album over goal compilations, clips, etc. - when they were current/new - but of course this was still pre-wide-spread-internet days and I didn't know the band name because the show didn't always say what bands/songs they used over their clips. Then I was in Virgin Megastore one day and one of their songs came up on the store radio station and luckily they said the band name after the song. I walked straight over to the CDs, found the first album, listened to a couple songs quick in-store to double check I had the right album (back in the days where you could take a CD over to the counter and they'd play it for you through some headphones for you to listen to), bought it, took it home and have been a massive Doves fan ever since. They are yet to do a bad album and despite having many No. 1 albums in the UK, critical acclaim and being well-received by anyone who listens to them, they're still vastly under-appreciated in the wider sense of things. Love every song on the album, but if i were forced to pick a favourite, I'd probably go for Satellites very, very closely followed by Pounding. Thanks for the trip down memory lane; I have the songs on my playlists, so often here them individually, but it has been years since I just sat down and listened to this entire album in full... genuinely got emotional hearing this as a whole again. If you want to listen to a single song, maybe do Andalucía? I love it, one of my favourites, plus it's only on their greatest hits album, so wouldn't be covered anyway if you did their other studio albums.

I came across Doves via (gasp) the radio, too. There (still) is an indie/alternative late night show on Austrian radio and they played the debut back in 2000 on the show. Immediately bought it and every studio album afterwards.

Doves started out their musical life as "sub sub" a 90s dance group whos one big song "aint no love" was actually really good.

ahhh, god i miss this era. late 90s, 2000s...so many uk groups were so good. oasis, doves, embrace, dodgy.radiohead, supergrass, manics.... and more. think my music taste got spoiled. oh and the song "pounding" was everywhere when it came out. im amazed bands like Doves seem to hit big, then disappear.

I was at their debut Glastonbury performance 1999, i think they had only released a couple of singles at the time so they were on at about 10a.m, still memorable tho, there was a group on a naked protest & another guy sat on his own rolling a ciggie,& he was the most off his face person ive ever seen, the single strum during the gig pre tune up of guitars caused him to pull all sorts of facial expressions while delivering his best air guitar performance,

One of the best and also loudest gigs I ever went to back on this tour in about 2002 at Brixton academy. Incredible live band and you have to listen to the first album. This is the 2nd one. Went to number one as it was eagerly awaited after their debut masterpiece. They used to be called Sub Sub and were a dance band back in the 90s. Their studio burned down and they scrapped everything and started again. They always finished gigs with a sub sub song called Space Face which is worth looking up. Live it's ridiculous. I think in order of preference I like Lost Souls, Some Cities and then this one. Kingdom of rust is decent and I have t listen to the new one enough to make up my mind. Another English band who were excellent and made two albums of very grandiose, cinematic music were The Maccabees. First two albums were noughties indie. I loved them but the 3rd and 4th album were masterpieces. Definitely worth checking out.

I never had the pleasure of seeing these guys live, but I've heard that, despite not being a 'heavy' rock band, they were/are notorious for playing extremely loud.

Hehe. The Doves not only come from the same country as Oasis but from the same part of the same country as Oasis! 😜 For me their use of rhythm is about as good as any band I’ve heard. Probably due to their history as a successful dance music band/production group as at least one person has already pointed out. I still don’t understand how such a simple rhythm part as employed on Pounding even works… but it not only works, it’s epic!

Even though you said you hate oasis I still think definitely maybe is a mandatory listen before I can take that opinion seriously.

Unfortunately your favourite German has requested the wrong Doves album. In my humble opinion, Lost Souls is far superior. This is still a great album though.

I 💯 agree, i like this but i dont think there 1 song on it better than any from Lost Souls, that is just an indicator of how good Lost Souls is

Hi everyone. Yeah "Lost Souls" certainly is a strong album, but a bit more experimental and moody/melancholic. I wanted to give something more uplifting as a Doves experience for a start.
