Gday Everrett, great to see your posting again, your old workshop must’ve been well insulated, at 11pm here it’s absolutely that quite “apart from the waves crashing” you can hear a fly fart, the dovetails look spot on, the new mill does a beautiful job, im off to watch part 2, cheers

Lol, thanks Matty, yes the walls were well-insulated (and even better insulated in the new shop!). Also helps my neighbors liked me (new ones too) as I do/did repairs for all of them so they cut me a lot of leeway!

Hi Everett, you've made a superb job of the dovetailed sideway. I've an easy way to add a power feed your table traverse without loosing any travel and it won't break the bank. I'll send you an email. I made one for my previous chinese round column mill it worked faultlessly. It will give you some ideas. Great to see you again in your new workshop. Tony

Nice to see You "back in the saddle" Everett! (Know about Your move and the need to set up Your shop and caring for Your family.) Had a really good day today so lots of commenting energy. Novel of comments.... Randy's cutters... I also bought the full set and the knocker. Really fine tools. Nice to see You use a face cutter. I've got one. Many guys are tied to fly cutters... I've got no one.... Oops... You're cheating on me... Eleven o'clock, children sleeping... That's the hour when I go to the shop and try ideas growing during the last days.... I hope nobody will wake up..... That's my thinking regarding the neighbours... Time 04:00. Hand feeding. I like that! (Having no power feed...) Time 05:45. Cleaning the caliper using "the costume".. Are we relatives? Time 06:30. What? Are You using only one insert? Why not all 4? Time 09:58. Chip catcher.... I made one using a piece of obstructing plastic, for the lathe, or mill, and some neodym magnets. I'll search for Your Email.... Chips in the socks, every ware. Be my guest! You imperial guys use thous.... My standard unit is 0.01 millimeter with an option to measure 0.001 millimeter... One of my daughters played the flute and cigarette paper was used to clean the instrument afterwards. Being a child regulations stopped her from buying that paper. The mot smoking dad had to smuggle that paper to her... Doing the side milling before the dove tail milling ought to cut down a difficult deburring... 3 AM here. Next part tomorrow... Cheers.
@EverettsWorkshop2 жыл бұрын
Lol, thanks Stefan! Yes, there is only one insert in the face mill. Two reasons: 1) the inserts for that Iscar face mill are oddball size and stupid expensive, and 2) my machinist buddy suggested using the face mill like this as a tough carbide fly cutter due to the thick mill scale on the hot rolled material. So yeah, it's a fly face mill, lol!

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that bought a dovetail cutter from Randy and let it sit for a while! 😁 What's the thinking behind turning your end mill into a fly cutter? Sincere question not trolling...
@EverettsWorkshop2 жыл бұрын
Lol, I know when trolls are tromping on the bridge, you're not even close! I was discussing dealing with mill scale with a machinist buddy of mine and he suggested using the face mill with one insert as it creates a very rigid fly cutter. Also, it is an oddball Iscar face mill with expensive inserts, so this messed fewer inserts up overall even if it took longer to machine, lol!

when I'm doing a part like that when i get to the finishing cuts i leave the cutter in place then take the part out turn it around to cut the other side that way everything is central
@EverettsWorkshop2 жыл бұрын
That totally works too - I was mostly just running on the math. For what this part was going to be, a variance from centerline of a thou or two would not have been a huge deal so I just left it mounted as it was.
@tsmartin2 жыл бұрын
Adding a power feed will allow you to be more productive. You can just let the mill run while working on another machine.
@EverettsWorkshop2 жыл бұрын
A power feed is on the wants list, that is for sure. I've already started collecting bits for one but just need the time (and shorter to-do list) and it will happen, lol
@twoprop87342 жыл бұрын
Very interesting and thanks for the video. I was wondering why you didn't use all the inserts on the flats?
@EverettsWorkshop2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, glad you could find it interesting! Two reasons for the single insert - one, the inserts for that head are quite expensive (oddball size Iscar head) and two, in talking with a "real" machinist buddy about removing scale, he suggested using it as an indexable fly cutter instead of as the full face mill.

What is the logic behind only putting one insert in the face cutter? Wouldn't fitting all the inserts make the job quicker by enabling a faster feed to be used?
@noelhenderson73372 жыл бұрын
He will only wear out one insert cutting through the mill scale rather than 5 or 6. Those things are expensive, in Canada anyway.
@chrisarmstrong81982 жыл бұрын
@@noelhenderson7337 Expensive in Australia, too. If cost is the issue, maybe using an abrasive disc on an angle grinder to get rid of the mill scale first would be cheaper.
@EverettsWorkshop2 жыл бұрын
Like Noel mentions below, the inserts are pricey, especially for this oddball Iscar size of insert (didn't realize that was why it was a "deal" on eBay when I bought it). Also, my "real" machinist buddy suggested this as a very rigid fly cutter setup to chew through the mill scale. It was a bit messy but it worked!
@Rustinox2 жыл бұрын
Having a beautiful mill like that but no auto feed. Isn't that a bit like champagne without bubbles? But I'm sure you already have a solution for that.
@EverettsWorkshop2 жыл бұрын
Lol, well, it is in the plan for at some point. I'd like to make my own, as the commercial ones are cost prohibitive, but that will need some time yet. For that sort of stuff one needs to collect the right junk, which takes time 😁
@hilltopmachineworks21312 жыл бұрын
@@EverettsWorkshop Prices on the power feed units have come way down. You can pick up an import one for under 150 bucks now. I put one on my knee and one on my X axis when the Servo brand unit died. Both units have been working great so far.

what is your opinion on using flood coolant ?
@EverettsWorkshop9 ай бұрын
I would like to use coolant at some point, I just haven't had time to go over the mill and finish fixing the last few things on it. It has a coolant pump but I haven't had a chance to see if it works or not. Nor have I had a chance to clean the sump, which might not be fun, lol
