NC was the site of first flight but Ohio is definitely the birthplace of aviation. And sorry to burst his bubble, but the record for the longest continuous flight is held by Robert Timm and John Cook, who flew a Cessna 172 for 64 days, 22 hours, and 19 minutes in 1958-1959.

@FlywithHayley
@FlywithHayley 5 ай бұрын
Thankyou! We perform a maneuver called a power off approach that simulates an emergency situation like losing your engine to land. Actually turning your engine off in a single engine airplane is dangerous but will have to get the simulated maneuver on camera sometime!
@dellmerlin6328
@dellmerlin6328 4 ай бұрын
@@FlywithHayley It would be interesting to really turn the engine off and show us what the plane sounds like, how the plane feels like as a glider, how you decide what to do when there is no runway nearby, and what goes through your mind when you know you have only one chance to put the plane safely on the ground. Have you flown a glider?

I thought that the longest non-stop flight was the around the world flight of the Rutan Voyager in 1986. Although, if the qualifier was for single engine, that might be a Bonanza.
@wizardgmb
@wizardgmb 5 ай бұрын
The Voyager holds the record for the longest nonstop unrefueled flight & it was around the world. A USAF KC-46A (military version of a 767) tanker recently set a record by flying 45 hours nonstop around the world with two complete crews & a flight surgeon onboard. It was refueled in flight by other USAF tankers & tanked an assortment other USAF aircraft along the way.

Happy Birthday Hayley! Great flight thanks for sharing, its awesome you both had a great time and flight. Trivia question answers: First powered flight is a two part/place answer. 1st) In 1848 with a light-weight wood frame and close fitting silk or cotton fabric and a steam driven engine, he successfully accomplished some short flights in a large empty room in Oram's Mill, witnessed by many people. Therefore, John Stringfellow of Chard was the first to achieve recorded, powered flight. 2nd) On December 17, 1903, two brothers from Dayton, Ohio, named Wilbur and Orville Wright, were successful in flying an airplane they built. Their powered aircraft flew for 12 seconds above the sand dunes of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. The longest flight recorded: Still undefeated record: The world record for the world's longest continuous flight was set in 1959 by Robert Timm and his co-pilot John Cook. Months in the air: The men flew a modified Cessna 172 four-seater aircraft for 64 days, 22 hours and 19 minutes. (Information from "The Longest Plane Flight Without Landing")

While first flight was in NC. Ohio, more specifically Dayton, Ohio is where the Wright Brothers developed and perfected the Wright Flyer. that work was done at Huffman Prairie and was where they really learned how to fly and control their aircraft, that site is a National historical site (Part of national Park system) inside of Wright Patterson AFB. In the years leading into WWI and the between years leading to WW2, they actually had a factory (Still standing, but the runways and most of the other things are no longer there) on what was then called McCook field which was the key R&D and manufacturing site for the Army Air Corp. so the home of powered flight is Dayton Ohio and when it comes to development and management of modern Military Aviation that would still be Dayton Ohio. You should come see it all, Carillon Park (another national site with an original Wright B Flyer, and of course there is also the national Museum of the United States Air Force (the largest Aviation Museum in the world). it would take you at least 3 days to see it all.

Haley, curious the routing you flew, the altitudes, etc. Try this next time. Forget Kingsbury (Dagget Pass.) Too much traffic & potential Sierra Wave action late in the day. Instead try going across where Hwy 88 is & then turn SW toward Columbia when you’re over the Hope Valley then turn SE down the valley between the Lemoore MOAs. Before Columbia you have Bear Valley for emergency landing if needed. Shortest route over the Sierras I have found. 10,500 to Columbia, then 11,500 to the L.A basin over the Tehachapies. Curious why you went down to 7500 then back up so high before descending to the basin.
@FlywithHayley
@FlywithHayley 5 ай бұрын
Will have to try that routing! I don't do the pass in the afternoon for that reason- but I like the sound of more places to land crossing the Sierras. In Southern CA the winds were better down low but had to clear some terrain coming into LA so went back up to 9500 as I got closer to KEMT. Was a fun flight and SO much better than the drive :)

Columbia airport is a great place to try if you haven’t already. Amanda’s cafe is 1/4 mile walk. Just go straight through the admin building down the road to hwy 49 & go right. Amanda’s is on your left about 100 yds. Come to the AAC (Airport Advisory Committee) usually at the Minden Courthouse, sometimes in the CAP office at MEV. It’s the first Tuesday each month at 6pm. Lots going on at MEV. Your input & ideas would be welcome.

The statement that it was a Beech Bonanza that had the longest non-stop flight was only correct after 1949, and it was only the longest non-stop SOLO flight. In 1986 the Voyager, designed by my friend Burt Rutan, flew non-stop around the world without refueling, and it had his brother, Dick (who passed away this last May) and Dick's then-wife, Jeanna Yeager, aboard.

..........Dear Hayley, I'm your biggest fan in Devon Pennsylvania, but I have to tell you - it's kind of irritating listening to your exchanges with your friend over your radios. It's hard to understand what you're saying. You have at least two Gopro-type cameras in your plane, and I'm pretty sure they record sound - I guess it might be a pain in the ass, but if one of your Gopros has an audio in, couldn't you run a separate mic and attach it to the stem that holds your radio mic, to bypass the scratchy radio comm audio? I get it - the engine noise is pretty loud, but a good mic would attenuate to your voice, wouldn't it? Oh well. Never mind.
