In the eyes of Hitler's infamous secretary, Traudl Junge (Alexandra Maria Lara, The Reader), optimism crumbles into grim realization and terror as it becomes clear that Germany's defeat is inevitable. As the Russian army circles the city, the dimly lit halls of the underground refuge become an execution chamber for the Führer and his closest advisors.

When I first learned about WW2, my heart shattered when I found out about the Volkssturm. Those men are old enough and saw everything and the young are young enough that they didn't see a thing but all have to die regardless. Some even fought in WW1 already, they earned life and peace but because of the leaders. They could've surrendered and spared the lives of their fellow but nah.

Let’s say that most of the WW1 soldiers were born around 1890-1900. By the end of the war they’d be 45-55 so there’s a solid chance a lot of them ended up in that position. Sucks.

My great grandfather got wounded as s 47 yo man in 45 just like he had in 1918. he then spend a few years as a PoW and came back a living skeleton that always stored away bread under his pillow (like in the PoW camp so that it doesnt get stolen) even decades later. He was an American PoW but was unfortunate to be captured towards the end when the treatment of prisoners by the US got a lot worse for various reasons. My great uncle who was captured by the US was treated much better although he put on some dead soldiers clothes to not get executed (he was drafted into the waffen SS volksgrenadier division for the battle of the bulge. He was originally a pilot but since he had no plane to fly was repurposed. These dividions were not core waffen SS but wore the same coat and therefore were often mistreated or killed by the US troops)

There were 2.3 *million* Soviet soldiers, 6,000 tanks, 42,000 artillery, and 7,500 planes deployed for the capture of Berlin alone. Did they really think they had a chance? "As far as I was concerned, the war was ended in September [1944]." -Field Marshal Gerd von Rundstedt
@GeorgiaBoy1961

@ bag3lmonst3r: Re: "Did they really think they had a chance?" Any rationale person would have seen the hopelessness of the German war situation well-before the Battle of Berlin, but the problem was that Hitler was not rational by that time, indeed had become unhinged and detached from reality. The film shows that quite well, as he and his senior staff are moving around imaginary armies on a map, either unaware or uncaring that those armies no longer exist. No one wants to break the news to him for fear of being shot. So his lackeys like Jodl and Keitel pretended right along with him, that all was well above in the streets of the city, even as the might of the Red Army began to tell and the defenders were defeated piecemeal. Ultimately, of course, even Hitler and his staff had to face reality, but the denial was very deep. It was in fact a sort of psychosis on the part of the senior Nazis and their followers.

Operation bagration resulted in the near destruction of the German army as it was not only fighting units that were caught in the encirclements but also indispensable administrative personnel. A secondary defeat in Normandy resulted in even more losses. But even so, with the allied declaration of unconditional surrender and the with it the prospect of foreign occupation, would you surrender knowing that you can still field units to at least defend your country? I think that even today in many countries, soldiers are obligated by law to defend their country. Back then this was also augmented by systematic brainwashing.
@jamesbutler8821
@jamesbutler8821 2 жыл бұрын
I was reading recently a history of the battle of Alamein. Even in 1942 the Nazis were fielding units with just 40 tanks and calling them Panzer divisions, constantly shifting them to cover for holes appearing in their lines. The Germans were hopelessly outmatched. Their only real hope was if they had beaten Russia before the end of 1941. Once Stalin held Moscow and the US, and more importantly, its industrial capacity came in, there was never any hope of any result other than German collapse.

@@mimir4965 Respectfully disagree. With the Soviet Union, damaging the political apparatus was all important. In WW1 the Germans did not advance anywhere near as far as in the 40s but the Russian political system was in chaos so it folded like a cheap suit. If the Russians had lost ANY of their politicalized cities-- Leningrad, Moscow, to a different degree Stalingrad, I doubt the regime would have survived.

I feel like there's a lot of nuance with the time and place that you're not taking into consideration. The cult you've been indoctrinated in is imploding, your fearless leader you had so much faith in is more and more quiet and withdrawn with each passing day, there's desperate propaganda all around you implying a fight to the last man and round, enemies are closing in on all sides and the enemy you presently have to deal with is currently ravaging the capital, the seat of power of your home country. and the promise of that thousand year empire of white people is turning to little more than a bombed-out ruin of rubble and dust. Now you're just a kid during all this, you probably don't know much about life and the world beyond "do what the adults say" right? Well, now all the adults are getting shot in the face for doing a bunch of war-crimes and trying to take over the world and shit. Now what? The fighting men, women, and children of Germany had a lot going on at the time, to say the least. Morale and shell-shock are both things.
