That makes two of us! I had a big-time crush on Paul after I saw the Downings in the summer of 1977, and they did have a much more contemporary vocal group sound than most of southern Gospel had at the time. What a great clip!

You know, back in the day, they must have been VERY contemporary as far as Southern Gospel music went.

Terrill White Prb so, but it’s actually decent compared to what is contemporary today.

Definitely ahead of their time. They would be considered contemporary by Southern gospel standards today. Really talented group

@@dmichael100 so, in other words, the Downings were to mixed groups what the Imperials were to quartets

@@darrellschrock5547 That's a very good analogy. A lot of southern gospel fans at the time said they "didn't sense the anointing of the Holy Spirit" with groups like the Downings and Imperials- what they really meant (but wouldn't admit) is that they just didn't like the style because it wasn't what they grew up with.

My favorite group as a youngster in the early 70s. Plus, I thought Joy was just the cutest little redhead....the fact that she could flat out sing didn't hurt either :-)

The band are quite tight,,they needed to put the band higher in the mix. Quite funky. Southern but needs more soul. Like The Soul Children, Shirley Caesar or the Facts of Life.
