The Department of Education operates a wide range of subsidy programs for elementary and secondary schools. The aid and related federal regulations have not generally lifted academic achievement. The department also subsidizes higher education through student loan programs. Unfortunately, that aid has fueled inflation in college tuition and is subject to widespread abuse.
The department spent about $48 billion in 2013, or $400 for every U.S. household. It employs 4,300 workers and operates 153 different subsidy programs.

Unfortunately Reagan was right: "Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth!"

@@Rafe383 by good, do you mean 19% of students graduating functionally illiterate or the 50% of students that perform below grade level on all subjects? Do you think the department of education would pass the test (pardon the pun), or do you defend bureaucracy because you can’t imagine schools functioning if the federal government isn’t dumping money into the giant grift that is the public sector?

@OB_GYN_Kenobi 28 күн бұрын
@@Rafe383btw, in the 10 years since this video was made, the department of education budget has doubled (that’s what tipped me off to check the date, since the current cost is about $100b a year - $1trillion dollars a decade for something that didn’t even exist 50 years ago).

@@OB_GYN_Kenobi Yes inflation has occurred along with higher school rates and a pandemic in the past 10 years. 50% of students being below the average for a grade level is how average works.

@@Rafe383 I didn’t say below average (speaking of basic intelligence) I said below grade level. I’m sure you understand the difference, so why pretend I said otherwise?

There was no US Department of Education when I was in public schools, and we got along just fine. 5000 government employees and a $60 billion budget to run a department that does not educate a single student in this nation.

World's top-rated educational system: Finland. Why? No firm syllabus--teachers help students meet behavioral objectives the best way they know how. Teachers are the same as students--one size doesn't fit all. When you see that success, it makes the waste/interference of a Federal DoE even more ridiculous!

Census data studied by the Thomas B. Fordham showed that just over 20% of public school teachers send their kids to private school. This was almost double the national rate of the just over 12%. Sounds like public school teachers know better than most how bad their own schools are. Assuming workers at Ford got a free car for working there and over 20% of them opted to spend extra money to buy another make of car... wouldn't that tell you something about the product? Wouldn't the best option be to allow people who didn't use the public system to get vouchers they could use at competing schools? Wouldn't all schools have to perform better since they'd have competition? The public system especially hurts the poor who have less chance of being able to afford a better option for their kids. The excuse is always more money but, if more money equated to better schooling, we'd have the smartest children in the world.

I'd like to see the rankings adjusted for demographics. That is, white Canadians' test scores vs. white Americans'. The shifting demographic makeup of the U.S. based on test scores of past years indicates that test scores within groups are rising even though the conglomerate mean stays flat. Furthermore, apples to apples comparisons would leave the U.S. ranked somewhere in the top ten like Canada if I'm not mistaken. That said, the entire system should be privatized regardless, as even rising scores and high educational achievement relative to other nations don't mean the system is efficient nor ideal.

'Downsize'? On what PRINCIPLE is this based upon? Would we say we need to 'downsize' the amount of money a gang of violent criminals extorts from innocent non violent people? Would we say we need to 'downsize' the amount of violence and torture a rapist does to his victims? 'Downsizing' something that is inherently EVIL, is not exactly a moral argument. From a moral and virtuous position, these things should have never been done to begin with because they are inherently immoral. The idea of 'downsizing' seems to be more based on emotions and faith. Maybe thats because 'The Most Dangerous Superstition' in the history of the world is the cult belief in 'Government'?
