I am in month 5 of total downsizing/decluttering/minimalism journey. I had a huge estate sale and made enough to pay for a surgery schedule in January. That was 1/3rd of what I'm letting go of. It's a journey. I am away from my home several days/weeks at a time and I am moving eventually to a very small place so I don't waste so much money each month. I am giving myself 3 years to get this totally handled. Your journey is inspiring.

My favourite way to get rid of old things that I don’t need to recoup any costs for is to set them outside (in nice weather, of course) with a “free - please take” note. I started realizing this was an option when I moved into an apartment where it was a standard practice that you set furniture out by the dumpster if you wanted someone to take it. Only if it was broken did you actually put it in the dumpster. I both acquired and got rid of quite a few separate pieces this way. So simple and useful, and especially appreciated in an area that was full of students and young immigrant families!

I hate it when people cancel picking up free stuff. That's why I usually don't bother listing it and just let the thrift store pick everything up.

We don't live in a small space but we are downsizing what we own in order to do a long distance move. It's amazing how much stuff we've accumulated and never really use. We're donating two boxes today. We've gone through clothes, kitchen utensils and dishes. Next we'll be tackling decorables and other random things that have floated into our lives. It feels so much more comfortable living with less. I for one have no regrets with downsizing and this channel has been inspiring this transition. :)

I wish I were younger. Here's a tip which may still help? I borrowed my best friends vacuum and ducked all the air out of my garbage... ER... I mean my designer storage bags for seasonal cloth items so they'd store flat. It worked very well... once flattened I closed them with duct tape. Maybe just a tip for next time. Hugs to you both to repair your stress. You did it and you are STILL TOGETHER! Hats off to you both! You are doing your experiences RIGHT!

A high top Transit ! Think you will be so much happier in something you can stand up in especially in rainy , snowy or just blah days when you don't feel like exiting the van to stretch your legs . For me personally I would put no windows in mine , you can't believe how many nosey folks there are who try to look inside your van even if you have curtains , my reasoning is if you have no windows then it greatly curbs their curiosity with no way to see inside and all the light I need comes through the skylight vents and LED lighting. Good luck with the build , remember measure twice and cut once , though you can still get it wrong on occasion so I've learned Lol . 🙋😅👍👌

I have been in the process of downsizing, by myself, my 4 bedroom 8 room 2 bath home that I raised my 3 children in. The most frustrating part is when people that express interest in free or almost free items just do not show up. Not even a message. Just no show. I have put so many beautiful items on my curb. They are always taken away. Good luck to you.

Going through a similar process this week. Wish me luck! I opted to switch to things that I know I wanted to keep and things I wanted to let go. As for my books, I opted to get rid of books that didn't wow me to a used book store in my area that purchases used books, which helped me with packing. The few books I kept were books I couldn't either part with yet or couldn't find a good digital copy of. I also opted to do a flash sale for bigger items and as the days get closer, the discounts get deeper as traveling with money is easier than traveling with things. I'm always concerned about going too far, which you've helped me to understand during my travels and I cant thank you guys enough. Legit travel heroes!

Ummmm. I was with you until the end - when you said we didn’t want to store stuff at our parents house (as in plural?) this time around. Does that mean you still have stuff at your parents houses - both of you? How can you claim to be minimalist if you give other people the job of storing your stuff. Please take responsibility and get yourself a storage unit or something, or get rid of it. I think it is selfish that you want the benefits of minimalism for yourself and yet deny it for your parents… Sorry, I don’t mean to be rude or negative, but that’s what it sounded like you said? As an older minimalist 50+, many of my friends have kids that treat their houses like storage units and hotels. And even though they’re not minimalists - they complain endlessly about this behavior. I have heard them many times saying how they’d like to turn those “storage rooms” into offices, gyms, or meditation rooms but can’t because their kids are using it… Just a heads up on how the other half feels. And the sad thing is, they would never dream of saying anything to their children? From one “older” minimalist to all of you wonderful younger minimalists: Please remember that parents have dreams and goals too. Again, sorry to rant. :)

Jane Doe I agree with you, I have boxes of stuff of my son's as he is waiting to move from renting to buying, I have moved the boxes dusted them despaired over them now he says he doesn't need all of it as he's a minimaalist, So am I son, so am I!

@private156 жыл бұрын
It sound to me as if they had stored stuff at their parents but not any longer and not with this move. So they are maturing and taking responsibility for their own stuff. Also her points in a later video about donating or giving away and reusing responsibly sounds pretty nice to me. Not just taking it to the dump. Yes kids sometimes want to hold on to things when they are starting out but as they mature they can learn how to let it go and if that means I store it for a while then I can live with that. Giving our kids wings means sometimes holding the parachute for a bit. Being a soft place to land but then after a bit of self care you have to push them out of the nest again.

Amazing how many people younger and older, singles and couples with pets even are doing it comfortably and happily and loving the freedom and community as well as the cost of living. Move out! 😄. That's the easier way to departed with your book..because moving out are so overwhelming. U have hundreds of more important things to bring to new place. Books are heavy..and u dont have much energy to deal with it..and need lots of space. I downsize from 3 bedroom apartment to 1 bedroom. I have around 500 hundreds book before..and love book so much..its hard to imagine to let go any of my books...but i move out last year.. I passed all the books to my daughter(stay another place)and donate some of it. I only bring with me around 30 books I am so satisfied..and never regret or miss my books. 😃
