Tom inserting himself into their courtship trying to push them together was honestly kinda funny. But it was so natural. It showed that he truly thought of Mary as his sister. And then when they finally worked things out he was like, “I’ve been involved in enough of the courtship.”

I was tempted to stop watching when Matthew died. I'm so glad I didn't but whoa after all that to get them together, it really was a bitter blow. I'm happy it was Henry too, I think they fit together perfectly. 💖

I like Henry, he really does match her as an adult. It's hard to fall in love again as a widow and Henry's strength gave her the freedom to love again without fear of being hurt. I loved the scene when her and Granny talk about him bc everyone thinks she's being snobbish when it was so obvious to me that she was terrified of his racing. She gave cars a chance after Matthew and immediately after, Henry's best friend dies in an accident. She loved him enough already to not want him to give up his passion and Granny saw right through her. Only Tom and Granny knew the real Mary was just scared and using his money and position as an excuse to run away. I'm so glad Granny broke through with her. ❤

@@Steelee3 Thank you! And they really do. When Granny explained that Tony had everything she could ask for but didn't suit Mary, it warmed my heart. Bc so many people get Mary wrong but her and Mary are so similar, she understands exactly what Mary needs and Henry was it. Granny hated Richard Carlisle bc he had the strength but was waaay too brash, even for Mary. Henry was strong, confident and most importantly, kind.

im late but ive just started watching downton abbey. ive just finished season 1, but i knew that matthew going to die soon. Matthew instantly become my favourite person in the series, i dont know how im going to continue the series when he died 😭 but im glad Marry found Henry, he seems nice.

The way Mary looking at Henry it's shown that Mary tried to restraint herself not to falling in love with Henry...but Henry Talbot it's attractive, that's intrigued her.. Perfect casting for Henry Talbot...well, it's Matthew Goode,,he always makes womens devastating on screen...

TOTALLY agree...Mary wasn't spoiled when they first met like most say...she seemed very broken and hurting ... but Matthew was so kind and caring and respectful to her...and then she started becoming more kind and more caring too...it was such a joy to see...

I think they had, the end of the sixth was supposed to be the happy ending but then the films came along. 😔 I do love the films but because they weren't anticipated at the time Matthew Goode had moved on. I love them together.

I did like Charles and they got on well. I much prefer her with Henry but my next choice would be Charles. I’m glad she didn’t end up with Tony. 🙂

Mary thinks Henry is her love because everyone else keeps telling her so..She does not feel it. He may in love with her but he can't control her in proper manner. Though at a moment, Matthew might have been out of heirship n remained only solicitor, she wanted to be with him. He could bring best out of her.... She was perfectly handled though both were strongheaded. Henry may be a good person but is he really her match?

I think people kept telling her that because it’s true. She was trying so hard not to be in love with him because she was terrified of being hurt again. Violet was very wise and loving and gave her good advice and helped a lot. I think Matthew did bring out the best in her and he was perfect for her especially at that stage of her life. He suited young Mary well. Henry does too, he is her equal in strength, in intelligence and in passion. He suits her perfectly especially at this stage, together they will preserve Downton. I think he is her perfect end game.

@@Steelee3 probably....unfortunately, not much to show in the scenes to believe Mary's falling for him or passion or the struggle with herself...if they would have had more of such scenes, it would have had been more convincing...

@@mansighanekar One reason there aren't more scenes of them together is that Matthew Goode had other commitments. Julian Fellows, the creator and writer of Downton, talked about this. The reason Matthew Crawley died is that Dan what's-his-name (sorry) who played him wanted out of the series to do another film. And there were other characters that had wanted out. In that first year, none of them knew what a big hit it would be.

I think he was hurting and desperate. He did seem a bit over the top but I was glad he gave her the space she needed. So glad too for Violet and Tom and their loving advice.

Quite a contrast with what happens on any discussion of Jordan Peterson. There it's the opposite. It's quite shocking, the really nasty things his fans say to me, because I think he's a sexist blowhard. Some men really aren't comfortable in this century.
