LOL Tom's little retort to Henry is just the best. Being a reluctant Third-Wheeler

To me Matthew was the one for Mary. He was able to brought out the best side of Mary, the way she talked, saw and cared for him is uncomparable Matthew was the love of her life and when he died she felt like a part of her soul was ripped apart

a beautifully written and moving scene.... so realistic in how emotions in the world really are and how social dynamics fall into place, freindships, love, trauma, heartbreak, respect and hatred, stress and passion........ the best series ever...

We don't really know, do we? Mary and Henry had less than 1/4 of screen time Matthew and Mary had to built their relationship.

In the movies she seems to have soften at least some as she and Edith tends to get a long rather splendidly. Though not living under the same roof and bumping into each other daily might be the reason to that.

I love this scene. And Henry and Mary's relationship evolution really. Mary I think k was scared to love again because she thought she was betraying Matthew but also she was frightened of losing someone again (he was a racecar driver). Whilst Mary and Matthew's love is different to Henry and Mary's, it's no less touching. Whilst I didn't like parts of Mary's character, I loved how they showed that whilst she is deeply flawed like many, she also is a good person and does truly care.

Why do they need a license to marry, approved by the Archbishop of Canterbury, no less?

in that time you would have to have read the bans in church for several weeks. getting a special licence meant being able to marry right away.

Not just then but now also. Even in registry marriages you have to advertise the marriage few weeks before hand.

I'm not sure I would marry someone who has just told me coldly that she is not trembling at the touch of my hand and that she only accepts me now for lack of a better option. That doesn't sound like a promising start for marriage.
