At first I just couldn't stand how cruel she was to Edith and how selfish she was after Matthew died in regards to her son, George. I liked her relationship with Carson and Anna but when she told Thomas that she understands what it is to say really hurtful things to people not knowing why, I realized she was a good person. It was difficult for her to express herself in the time period she was living just like Thomas. Downton Abbey is just the most perfect show.

One of my favorite moments for Mary is when she mistakenly believes someone was rude to Tom (this was recently after Sybil died), and she turns sharply to him with wide, furious eyes and says, "Who was rude?!" in a tone that suggested she was going to make whoever it was pay. I have to say that, as someone with a domineering older sister as well, it made it hard sometimes for me to like Mary. I could relate to Edith SO much in terms of dealing with her sister. I also couldn’t understand how so many men fell for Mary when she has such a complicated character. When she was suffering she threw petty tantrums so that everyone around her had to suffer as well. Still, I’m happy she got her Happy End and in a way everyone got what they deserved. But I chuckled when Edith got one over her, in the end; rising above her in status.

I have an elder brother and two younger siblings, so I am both the eldest daughter/ granddaughter as well as the middle child in some way. Watching DA I found I could relate to both Mary and Edith; but somehow I always related more to Mary and liked her more. There's something about being the eldest daughter that is too complex to get if you are not one, there's a tremendous pressure and projection from caregivers growing up, which pushes you to be domineering and as strong as you can get. From my perspective younger siblings often have it better, they're free to be themselves more. This is why I feel despite the appearances, Edith was more privileged than Mary, she could afford more freedom and acceptance from people around her than Mary ever could. This is why I get your point, it's a question of perspective and how one relates to a certain situation, plus family dynamics are too complex to see through a black and white perspective.

@@meadowsanddawn7464 I get were you’re coming from. Still, I think as on older sibling you should try to guide your younger siblings and not throw them under the bus whenever possible. I experienced that myself often enough and now try to be different to younger cousins, at least. Yeah, Edith was not the best sister as well, but she mainly was this way because Mary constantly bad mouthed her and tried to show everyone around them how much better she was than Edith. She was only kinder when she was with kind men (Matthew and Talbot). There was one moment were Mary showed her real cruel side and that was when Bertie was announced the heir of the title Marquis of Hexam (or however it’s written). Tom pointed out how Mary couldn’t even be happy for Edith at the prospect of marrying someone that was higher in stand than anyone else in their family, even her. And then asked if she was contemplating taking Bertie from her sister just out of spite (and because she was unhappy anyway because of having broken up with Talbot) and how she should be ashamed of herself if that was so. Mary didn’t even deny it, just said something along the lines of “I don’t need a lecture from you”. What, for me, proves that she thought about it, if only for a second. Then she destroyed her sisters relationship by telling Bertie about Marigold in the rudest way possible; even though it was really not her place to do so in any way. Granted, she did help repairing their relationship in the end, but I don’t know if I would have ever been able to forgive that. In my opinion Edith was right in trying to cut off her sister from her life, even if she didn’t go through with it, in the end. I love the show and all the characters, but I don’t think it’s right that Mary is praised over the moon while Edith gets nothing but hate for the most part. Everyone has their faults.

Interesting. Even though I have a domineering older sister too, I liked Mary so much more than Edith. As a younger sister I thought Edith was terrible. She was constantly jealous, passive agressive and couldn't even see the good side in Mary. I think her behaviour is what always provoked Mary to act that way towards her.

I like both of them but I always remember how Sybil said Edith was a lot nicer after the war. So I always got the impression that Edith used to be bitter and mean to both sisters and Mary was equally awful to her. And even though they both seemed to grow into adults, Mary never really left that dynamic behind

I just LOVE how they wrote the women in this show. They’re all so complex. This show was never afraid to give them negative or toxic traits, then call them out and- most importantly- have them GROW. So often, female characters are given toxic traits and simply forced to suppress them later on. These characters don’t actually fix anything. It’s like an emotional plot hole. There’s real growth in Mary and Edith throughout the seasons, and they turn from spoiled brats inches from each other’s throats to incredibly powerful, wise, and kind women.

@@betaririzqikaer2451 Their engagement was unofficial because he was still married and he went to Germany to find out how he could divorce his sick wife. So, techinically, Edith was his mistress - and she still did something she judged Mary for aka had sex before marriage. Also, being his heir is unrelated to the comment at all. She was his heir but not because they were ''engaged'' but because they were having an affair which by standards of that time was outrageous.

@@christopherborsellino2268 lol oh my gosh I totally forgot I wrote this. I just think that she never was able to take responsibility for her actions and she always expected everyone to let her have the easy way and get away with stuff even if she was the problem. She continually hurt people on purpose, however unlike Mary, she was never able to actually see it and take ownership of it.

I don’t understand all the hate she gets. Edith is more deserving of hate in my opinion. Yeah Mary was definitely classist but she had her moments. She made sure William saw his mom before she died, she helped in the hospital, supported Sybil and Branson, took Lavinia’s presence in stride and tried to help her and be her friend, and offered her own bed to Anna when she went into labor. I could go on.
