Respect for the actress's decision to leave the show. But TBH the character Sybil was gone just too soon. Her character was so strong that even after her death, she continued to influence and guide the family. She was sorely missed by fans.

I agree! Sybil and Matthew's characters should have been replaced with other actors! The scene where her mother's reaction to her baking a cake was proof of Sybil's strength. Matthew believing Mary was capable of running DT was also proof of the strength and depth of both characters. Well, it's spilled milk now.

I love when Sybil says, "your dream is my dream now". She probably really means that. Before the war, Sybil could probably never imagine having a career of her own or a chance to to really direct her own future. Of course the war changed all that and she was able to become a nurse. But at the time, I think she was living vicariously through Gwen a little bit.

I venture to say that ANY war has changed the position of women due to the shortage of men on the home front. This forced women to take over the job responsibilities formerly attributed to the male species. With that women also finally received the recognition (IN PARTS ONLY) they were due. However, the pay is still vastly less these days for men doing the same job as women. Though the discrepancy has - over time - lessened. But it was a start.

@milanamughal

That’s what was the problem at the time. It was viewed as “elevation”. While working in house service or being a secretary, all is service in the wide variety of this notion. Gwen simply wanted a different path. She didn’t see herself as “elevating” over her friends and colleagues. And some (not going to point fingers here - but that character seemed to have been getting it wrong most of her time at Downton) took it as Gwen saw herself better than the others. Mean woman.

Mary and Edith knew that about Sybil. They just never truly acknowledged it out loud until they were forced to. And Sybil with Gwen kept that job hunt episode a big secret because there was concern that Gwen getting the job would be sabotaged somehow (if not by the narrow minded discriminatory attitude of everyone upstairs AND downstairs (just think the envy of some of them)).

I think what made them so unproblematic was, they weren't jealous, envious, discriminatory or narrow minded by any means. Cora had too much American in her where the British were always known to be rather snobbish. But they were open to change and did not feel threatened by change or challenge. Just remember Cora's attitude when the oven downstairs failed and her mother opted to improvise the picnic mode instead of that official dinner at the long table. She was rather open to it. Where everyone else was looking to have a certified heart attack.

@andywilliams7323

Not slavery at all. In Britain, Service was an extremely respectable and desired job among the poorly educated working-class. Those who managed to obtain a job in service were fortunate. Compared to practically all other low-education working-class jobs, such as farm, factory and construction work, etc. Service provided better pay, far easier, better and massively safer working conditions, excellent lifetime job security and far better opportunities for promotion and advancement with associated perks. Hence why the Butler says "there would plenty of young girls who'd be glad of a position in this house". Although the work was menial, the hours were extremely long, and they had very little free time. It was an extremely stable and secure job for life, with great long term opportunities for promotion, which provided a good and guaranteed steady and stable income, along with comfortable living accommodations and food for free. This allowed them to continually save a good portion of their income towards a comfortable retirement. It was a job with virtually no chance of physical injury or death. It was a job that carried and gave higher respect, prestige, status and privilege in society than all other working-class jobs. It also often allowed them to remain local and close to where they were born and to their families. Contrast that with factory, farm and construction work, etc. Those professions had extremely little job security, the people in them often had to continually search for work and income throughout their life. Both short and long periods of being unable to find actual work and income were common. They often had to source and pay for their own food and accommodations. It was very difficult for them to save money, and what they did save was for an emergency fund for when they were without work and income. Their work was massively more physically demanding and dangerous, and their risk of injury and death was extremely high. People often had to continually relocate to various parts of the country to find work far from their birthplace. If you were thrown back and trapped in time in Victorian/Edwardian Britain and forced to choose a working-class profession, but you could choose any you wished. You would choose service purely because it was by far the most secure, comfortable, easiest, safest, best paying and prestigious of the bunch.
