Sybil is one of our favourites, and for good reason - her fiery, rebellious spirit and strength in her beliefs is inspiring to say the least!
This is the official KZbin channel for Downton Abbey. Immerse yourself in the much-loved British historical drama, relive some of your favourite moments and tragedies, and keep up-to-date with the latest news.
The costume drama series, Downton Abbey, written and created by Oscar-winning writer Julian Fellowes, stars Academy Award-winner Maggie Smith as a Dowager Countess of an Edwardian English country house in 1912. The series portrays the lives of the Crawley family and the servants who work for them, in a time before the last vestige of a century’s old tradition were stripped away by World War and the modern age. The all-star cast also includes Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern.

She didn’t want to be only known for that role, as she had a desire to do a variety of different projects. So that meant leaving the show early on. Which is a smart thing to do when your a new actor & have a strong character your playing to boot.

@@Michiganian8I do believe it’s smart in some situations, but I think with this particular character, Sybil, with soo much growth potential, she made a mistake. Look at Lily James. If Jessica Brown-Findlay would’ve stayed, I believe she would’ve made Sybil iconic. I recently read an interview with her, I think it was an English local magazine, and the headline was Lady Sybil where you’ve been? So even after she left early to avoid that, she’s still remembered for that, why? Because she hasn’t done anything exactly different or bigger, and I believe if she would’ve stayed, she could have become a bigger star, hence having more opportunities on the long run.

It really was such an amazing show. But if you think about it, each episode was an hour and there were, I can't remember actually, about eight (?) episodes per series so if you consider the series to be an eight hour long film they had time for deeper plots. But I wouldn't be against sitting in a theater to watch an 8 hour long DA movie!

Now that you mention it, you’re right! I’ve enjoyed the movies, but they’re more fluff. Probably because they need to give the entire cast a chance to have a small story line. @@stationarywanderer7910she didn't think women should have the right to vote. She played by the rules of those times (made by men) and she wanted to keep the Status Quo since that was the only way to keep her riches and privileges. She was afraid of socialism. I live in a village in Romania, my great grandfather was a boyar (a romanian noble), he had a huge estate in the middle of the village with two beautiful mansions, horses and he owned all the land around the village with the forests too. When communists came, they took everything from him, the lands, the mansions, he had a heart attack and died shortly after. His wife had to go work like any other poor woman, selling candles in a church in the city. My grandad was an illegitimate child which the boyar acknowledged at some point before dying, but he inherited nothing, obviously. This is why the Countess wanted to keep her privileges and the system that kept her family rich and powerful. A wind of socialism and all that would be gone.

Sybil is who Maud Bagshaw would like to have been, had she been brave enough to flout tradition and her position. Sybil gave up everything to be with the man she loved and her values, such was her strength of character. Maud Bagshaw couldn't do that and never married her lover, keeping him and their daughter secret. (I know times changed in those decades, but I suspect Maud saw similarities in herself and Sybil's choices.) I suspect that's why she likes Tom so much.

One thing I've noticed from DA and other period dramas that's different now is that women took time to think about a proposal before saying yes or no. There was so much I loved about this series. My only quarrel was with the decisions to kill off the characters of two actors who had elected to leave the show. They could've easily been written out in other ways. One death perhaps, but twice? Almost as if the producers wanted to make sure the actors were never allowed back.

What really destroys me is the thought that Sybil was the least conventional Crawley woman, ready and willing to break free from the social mold in which she was trapped and transcend the expectations of women at the time with her work, suffrage, wearing pants, marrying a poor man, etc … and ended up dying due to the one thing that was expected of every woman in that patriarchal era: childbirth.

It was only in recent months that I started watching DA- I looked forward to watching it, especially to watch Sybil- while most of the DA fandom knew of her death- I didn’t- you can imagine how taken aback I was when she “died.” What about this Character that made her so beloved? For me it was her tenacity, her compassion, etc. she couldn’t help how she grew up, but she was willing to leave it all behind.

I always found it incredibly selfish of Sybil over the fact that she tricked Branson into taking her to the election. Gwen said in the same episode that for Sybil things she wishes for come true because she is raised to have it all within her grasp. She literally almost risked Branson’s lively hood for her own personal gain and at the same time wanted to cry about how progressive she was, yet she was selfish enough to use her servants to get her way.
@bogdancristea9270
@bogdancristea9270 2 жыл бұрын
I fail to follow your logic. She had to find a way to escape her golden cage. That doesn’t make her less progressive. Of course she was still, and remained till death, an aristocrat by birth and education, but she used her resources to grow as a mature independent character and, whenever possible, to help others.

@@thetillerwiller4696 Anyone who's been raised in a privileged home WILL be selfish to some degree. It's only natural because of how they were raised. Look at anyone in today's world who has everything handed to them. All it took was some reality to set in for that to change. Just because she was behaving true to form of anyone born with that level of birthright doesn't mean she intentionally did it to cause any level of harm or anything. She just was never outright raised to think of others because of how she lived. It may be selfish but only by circumstance only. She very quickly changed when it happened and THAT is the important part.

@@AngelJohnson66 your absolutely right. Sybil was the sweetest and selfless out of her family, but as you mentioned she was still raised in a aristocratic household and she had to break out of that mindset to become the wonderful person we all know.

In real life, her family would've disowned her and she would've grown to regret her decision. She has no concept of what it is to live with unending instability and hardship. She has no concept of what it would mean to raise her children in a harsh world and the disservice and regret that would come in knowing she could have given her children a better life. She has no concept of what it is to grow older and look back at young love and something you once felt such conviction for and know it was only because you'd never experienced anything else. As you age you realize falling in love is a passing state and it's not difficult to find with multiple people throughout life. She would've realized had she waited she'd just as easily fallen for someone who could've given her a nice life. If she waited she might have lived.
