If Julian Fellowes would think of this and be willing to write it, then something could still be done. A "Downton Abbey: Matthew and Sybil" miniseries could still be written and filmed. It could take each character by turns, and occasionally together, and back fill in some entirely new stories that just happen to fit into the vast gaps of time between the first series (season) and the last one. And with the other characters returning as well. But principally focusing on Sybil and Matthew, and previously unknown people who they may have interacted with in various ways through these interim years. In so doing, they could further flesh out some known Downton stories. And even use alternative camera shots for known scenes. Just like they use unused footage from the Karate Kid movies, in Cobra Kai. People would love to see Sybil and Matthew back again, in their prime. What a treat such a miniseries would be that focused primarily on them individually. And as much as possible, interacting with each other in various incidental scenes over the years

Seeing this scene just adds to the tragedy of Matthew's death, which isn't long after this. Yes, it's terrible and heartbreaking that Mary is left a devastated widow, that little George has lost his father, but others were terribly hurt by it too. In particular, I'm thinking of Edith. If one recalls the scenes where she starts talking about moving into writing for the magazine and such, you have people like Robert and Carson rolling their eyes and/or huffing dismissively, but then you have Matthew (and Tom too) who are happy for her and are kind and supportive of her efforts to find something to do with her time and her life. It was things like this that makes one realize just how much Matthew had become part of the family. And also here, you have Matthew getting Rose out of jam, even if he had to all but blackmail her to get her away from her adulterous boyfriend. Odds are, in time, Rose was extremely thankful that he did so.
@Robert080102 жыл бұрын
I don't think Robert objected for the reasons you do. Certainly if Carson expressed an objection it would be purely to spite any change at all. But to me Robert's objection seemed to be that he thought she was going to be exploited by the magazine, used for her good name and the publicity that would generate and then made to look foolish in the end. He was dismissive because he didn't want to see her hurt. Its just like with Mary. Everyone kept pushing her to get back to life after Matthew's death but Robert kept encouraging her to not hurry herself at all. Its like he treated them both a like fragile china dolls to be protected, not pushed forward into the light of day. He did evolved throughout the course of the series.

I found it interesting that Lord Grantham's sons-in-laws were instrumental in saving Lady Rose during her predicaments in embarrassing situations. In this scene, Matthew Crawley came to the rescue by giving her an ultimatum: leave Terence Margadale or face Lady Rosamund. In a later situation, Tom Branson came to her rescue. Such are the virtues of the men who married Lord Grantham's daughters.

@@margheritapomponio8691 My apologies. I should have been clearer in my comment. I was referring to the scene from Series 5, Episode 8. At the end of the bachelor party for Atticus, a woman entered his bedroom and encountered him in a compromising position. The following morning, at breakfast, Rose received photos of the "damaging encounter" at breakfast. It was Branson who rescued the situation by telling her to call Atticus in order to find out the truth. It was both he and Mary who did their best to salvage the situation for Rose and Atticus as they suspected that Lord Sinderby was behind the malicious act. In Series 4, Jack Ross, the black Jazz singer, spared Rose further embarrassment by rescuing her from a drunken Sir John Bullock. The disapproving ladies at the table sent Branson to "rescue" her from dancing with a black man. Yes, in today's context, such an action would not have been considered a "rescue" in itself. About a century ago, it was a different matter given the circumstances and social situations of the era.

Very ironic that the actress who played Rose now has a reputation for getting involved with married men. If you allow someone to have their cake and eat it too, they’re going to consume you and throw you away the second they lay eyes on a new pastry. You should NEVER be with a married person unless 1) you are the one that’s married to them 2) it’s the kind of situation where you have their consent. Rose the rebellious one, always out to tick that awful mother off by picking men society would not approve of her choices. First a much older married man, then the black man who was an American jazz singer then last a Jewish man. I do think she really cared about the last 2 guys, both of them, (married guy was just a lark) but you know she only got involved with them to tick off that awful mother of hers. Matthew did the right thing to remind her she would be hurting Schrimpy too, not just her mom. I was glad she and Atticus were still happy when the series ended. It could have gone so wrong since she was attracted to him for all the wrong reasons and Rose still seemed so immature when she got married.

Well, she liked Atticus before she knew he was Jewish. Rose is one of those rare, pure people who only sees humans, not catagories. There is a scene, as Rose and Atticus are getting more acquainted, where he reveals his family are originally from Russia, and are Jewish. You can see him VISIBLY brace himself for a possible hostile rejection. Rose takes in the information, and doesn't bat an eye. She doesn't care about such things. Atticus realizes this and looks positively ASTOUNDED.

@@miriamhavard7621 That's what I loved about her character .. I didn't think she really cared about status ... Like Edith...cause look how they both turned out in the end ...they weren't looking for it however got it ... sweet ....

She didn't pick the married guy, she just thought she did because she thought that she was being a modern independent woman when actually it was a case of a older married man manipulating a young girls naivety and desire for independence by acting like he saw her as a modern, capable woman and acting like his wife was terrible. Yes she made a choice but she was being manipulated by an older guy. he knew she wanted to rebel from her mother and he took advantage of that. Still, don't forget, she genuinely liked Atticus because she found out he was Jewish.

You can tell he's so fucking pissed. XD "WEll, eventually, I was set outside for . . . the best part of two hours." If I were him, I'd feel as though I'd been treated rather badly. And they just hop on in and ask him to go someplace else. I wouldn't be too happy about that. Not at all. Just gotta say, though, that the look on Rose's face when they walk up to her after she's been making out with that guy is absolutely hysterical! I fucking love it!

If Julian Fellowes would think of this and be willing to write it, then something could still be done to bring Matthew and Sybil back. What a treat such a miniseries would be that focused primarily on them, individually, and as much as possible, interacting with each other in various incidental scenes over the years

"Belgravia without the bustle" - well, I made a pilrgrimage to Belgravia, to 65 Eaton Place (Upstairs Downstairs remains one of my all time favorite shows) and I wandered for hours around Belgravia. Gorgeous, tony, posh, classy - but ZERO bustle. In fact, I was struck by how QUIET the streets were. Few people, little traffic, no city noises whatsoever. I guess it has changed since the 1920s.

Season 3 was fine in general but you could see how Matthew’s storyline began to stagnate. People resent Dan for leaving but he wasn’t getting to flex enough acting muscles considering his insane range.
