I live in Cleveland. I moved here in 1978, watched the place decline over the years, and moved to Cincinnati about ten years ago. When I left, there were dead, abandoned buildings all over the place. Now that I'm back, I see more empty lots than decaying buildings and a lot of new construction. Cities can come back. They just need people willing to do the work.

Being a Detroit native myself, I want to thank you for showing our city in a truer light. It's refreshing to see someone who doesn't try to find the worst places and contribute it the whole. Championship teams in all sports full stadiums, boat races,grand prix,big eight NCAA championship game, car shows Grand casinos and more. Oh yeah and plenty of movies filmed there ( Transformers) . But we're broke. Art museum top ranked in the country.

@sarplaninac137 жыл бұрын
Kirk Staples It is deserted, don't listen to all these suburbanites with the big old English "D" on their car that have never lived in Detroit just going to a couple of games a year and going to Greektown or a casino. A city that size and barely has 400,000 people living in it. At it's peak it had 5 million and avaraged 1 million per year for a long time. In came in crime, out went big companies and white people. Not being racist just stating facts. The majority of the people in Detroit are ignorant and ghetto, not wanting to advance. You can view many news stories that will back my statement. From corrupt city officials to failing school system and just non caring residents. Although they are trying to make a comeback, God willing they will, i don't see it for a long time. Save all your sky scrapers and restaurants and entertainment venues and concentrate on schools, education and finding people that love the city not just downtown and regardless of their skin color. Whites love Detroit just as much.
@sarplaninac137 жыл бұрын
Refreshing Yea exactly, you go downtown. You've never lived there or worked there. Detroit consists of more than just downtown. Stick to Rochester, Royal Oak or, in your case Fashionable Ferndale. Stick to the burbs, that's where you belong. Go to Detroit Monday thru Friday, around 2-3pm, it is dead. Have you ever been to Chicago, LA, New York, Toronto, Montreal,...?
@sarplaninac137 жыл бұрын
Refreshing Downtown, that's not the only part of Detroit. It is getting better, but schools and people who don't pay taxes need to get better. Adding bars and restaurants doesn't make a city. Go to any major city and you will see what it means to have a population of people, Detroit is VACANT!
@BurningtunaDC7 жыл бұрын
According to the US Census Detroit's peak population came in 1950 at 1.8 million making it America's fourth largest cities in terms of population. 5 million is a real stretch. Not even LA or Chicago are anywhere near 5 million.

If the goal was to make Detroit look great again, you failed miserably. Look how empty it is in the middle of the day. Hardly any traffic at all in the middle of Downtown. Can you even imagine downtown New York, Los Angeles, or Chicago looking this empty in broad daylight?

+Nonamearisto my goal was to put something on youtube. It is what it is.
@lt30966 жыл бұрын
That isn't in Sumption. First off people do not stick around and the business in court area's after work hours. There's no reason to. The restaurants are usually indoors or on the rooftop so you wouldn't see people. New York in LA are two of the largest cities in the US, with millions of people. Detroit no longer has millions of people. Detroit has just under 700,000 people.
@sixmile23606 жыл бұрын
Nonamearisto. Thanks for the positive feedback. You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. You are concluding that the efforts to bring back the city is a failure based on one video that was probably taken on a Sunday? I live in the city near downtown. In the last ten years over 25000 jobs have been brought back into city core. Ford just announced that they are renovating the old rail station and bringing an additional 2500 into Detroit. We are not Los Angeles or Chicago or New York. Today we are 75% smaller. None the less during the week the streets are busy with workers. On weekends, especially in the summer, there are lots of activities. There is an emerging food scene, casinos, concerts and tons of bars. We still have big problems. Schools, drugs, crime and decay but people are pulling together to fix it. Rich, poor and everyone in the middle. 20 years ago it was a ghost town all the time except for us natives. I am amazed by what is going on. Construction, renovations, repurposing. Too many projects to list. Too those of us who refused to leave and are actively involved in the comeback there is a deep pride in what is happening. To those folks from the outside we say come visit us and see the changes for yourself or to a troll like you we say please stay away. We dont need or want you around.
@trainrover6 жыл бұрын
Plenty of videos reveal LA's deserted downtown streets, for example. Nonamearisto knows neither how to show off nor how to grumble. Deserted downtown streets is an American phenomenon, and this here video certainly shows Détroit as bucking that country's undying trend.

Just noticed something -- where are the busses and light rail trains?
@wiibaron6 жыл бұрын
Tracks are for trolleys that are from the old days rarely used now. The over head 'beam' you see is the monorail system People Mover. Detroit doesn't have as many busses[or taxis] that other downtowns have because everyone has a car and comes from the suburbs. Plenty of parking around from all the empty abandoned lots. If it wasn't so depressed there, Detroit is really nice for getting around and doing business. Nighttime is abit different though when the scary comes out to prowl.
@sixmile23606 жыл бұрын
The trolley system is not fully abandoned. There is a new state of the art light rail system on the main street that goes from downtown to the new center area north of the city core. The lack of a unified transit system is a huge impediment to future growth and must be addressed.

@sixmile23606 жыл бұрын
Downtown where I live is safe. The downtown area is expanding rapidly but there are some really dangerous areas that are best to avoid. Ironically I was just in Nashville on business when some guy tried to strong arm us for cash. He didn't succeed. My advice is come visit us. Great vibe. Music, emerging food scene, fantastic museums, (art, greenfield village/henry ford in nearby Dearborn, Motown Museum to name a few.) Detroit is like any city. Be aware of your surroundings and watch your purse/wallet.

It is unfortunate that you are unable to interact with other posters as an adult or without resorting to childish name calling. It is clear that you have no idea what is happening in Detroit. Do we have problems? Absolutely. A lot of work is left to be done. But most of the progress is due to private investment not government funding. After seeing your other posts you are either a young person spewing drivel or a bitter old man. What a shame it's so dead. You don't even get enough cars to make a Jam. Until industry returns it will just go down hill further. This is the result of Japan, Korea, China that can make things so much cheaper. Unions have a lot to answer for in getting wages for workers that were just not affordable to the manufacturers. Australia has just gone through the same thing with no auto manufacturing at all. Everything now is imported
@PandaLuver19966 жыл бұрын
You just made a whole paragraph of a comment and completely ignored the one made by the poster saying that it was filmed sunday... a year ago. It's much livelier and exciting now, I work and live in downtown and it's pretty energetic every day of the week. There are a lot of companies and stores popping up and slowly bringing people back. It's going to be a long process with lots of work, but the downtown area is showing a lot of promise as to what it could be in the future
