The downtown skyline has really improved a LOT since the 70’s. I’m 55 and grew up in Houston, and I remember how completely BORING the skyline was back then. Mostly dominated by a bunch of soulless box towers like One Shell Plaza and Exxon Bldg. The Pennzoil Tower was the only somewhat interesting looking feature (of the then-modern scrapers). Today it’s a gorgeous, iconic skyline with a lot of architectural diversity. The boxes no longer dominate it. I just wish they’d build a supertall in the downtown center to perfectly frame it.

I was born and raised in Houston, but I've lived on the Atlantic Coast of Florida for many years. The beaches in Florida are so nice because they're artificial. After every big storm washes away the beaches, they spend millions of dollars to pump in sand from the ocean floor to build it back up, then they truck in tons and tons of white sand and dump it on the beaches.

Houston's highway system is a spoke and wheel system. You have the downtown loop, 610 inner loop, Beltway 8 toll loop & the new Grand Parkway toll loop. Then you have I-10, I-45, I-69 running through all the loops and connect with each other forming the downtown loop. You also have Hwy 288 which connects with all the loop but ends at downtown. TxDot is planning on demolishing most of this downtown loop and rerouting the I-45 pierce elevated to run along the I-69. On this stretch, both I-45/I-69 will be built below grade and cap off with a park on top. Downtown will flow into Eado, Midtown & 4th Ward without any break from the freeways. The view will be gone, traffic should be better and also brings more connectivity to downtown and surrounding neighborhoods
@Shikta-poobah672 жыл бұрын
The last thing Houston needs is more freeways, or more freeway lanes. What it does need is better public transportation and more walkable streets. At least the inner loop areas. People who live outside 610 seem to love sitting in traffic, so they can keep things the way they are.

@@Shikta-poobah67 so, you would spend a lot more per day in buses or trains, waiting for them until their scheduled arrival, and walk during the hot and humid summers? Enjoy it, not me
@Shikta-poobah672 жыл бұрын
@@kwt2000trucker Yes, absolutely I would, and I already have when I lived in the NYC tri-state area. It gets plenty hot and humid there too, not to mention the long cold winters. I actually spent a lot LESS money using PT as opposed to all the expenses of owning and having to depend on a car. I mean a LOT less. With a car, the added costs of fuel, maintenance, insurance, and parking add up to a fortune. It’s a huge money drain. As for waiting for scheduled arrivals, well as long as the PT is adequate and well managed, then you’ll never have to wait long for the next train. Definitely not as long as you have to wait for the bumper to bumper traffic to start moving. As for walking, I don’t mind walking. Keeps me healthy and it sure beats sitting in traffic for hours on end while spending over 4 bucks a gallon on gas. Maybe that sounds crazy, but that’s my preference.

I really wish that Houston had never annexed all those suburban areas and just let them incorporate into their own cities, but it is what it is. People ALWAYS hold this against Houston. If Houston had just kept it’s 1970’s city limits, it would be about 350 sq. miles and it would probably still be the nation’s 4th largest city, only with a much more accurate average population density, closer to 8,000 ppsm rather than 3,500.

Srry But you jus can’t compare a city like NYC to a world-class mega like Houston I mean thts almost like trying to compare an iPhone 15 to last year’s IPhone 14 their basically the same almost, w/ the exception of the “15” being the latest and the greatest Well same w/ nyc And Houston even though their both in the same league NYC is an older city And it’s the past vs.Houston being much younger And undeveloped w/ plenty of room to grow and clearly being the future it’s way more ethnically diverse && Cultured And in spite the fact tht over 51 million tourists flock here Annually rather its for shopping at the galleria or the food partying,NASA museum District,livestock show Mardi Gras on the beach or just simply our iconic landmarks such as the Houston graffiti park,The Gerald D. Hines water wall or the skylawn at post Houston dwntwn! Our city is still a rather inexpensive place to live despite inflation steadily rising Now dnt get me wrong I love me some New York some of my best times was had there! But if there was one threat tht Nyc had to worry abt it wouldn’t be L.A.or Chicago it would be Houston bcuz it’s growing almost at the same pace NYC && Chicago is declining But #Funfact if we wanted to be technical Then scientifically we’ve already surpassed nyc in population w/ over 22 million if you include the Texas triangle which seems only fair compared to nyc Nd all it’s boroughs cuz their like little compact cities within a city Then you have NY state which isn’t really much of a state at all cuz just like Illinois being all abt Chicago Ny state is the same way w/ nyc everything else might as well have been little rural towns && villages Whereas here in Texas it’s not all abt Houston it’s abt the entire tx triangle 5 major cities Austin,San Antonio,Dallas,Fort worth, Nd Houston!!!
