Thank you so much for sharing your skill. You are very generous. Would you please do a shirt alteration for guys with a belly. My hubby has very sloping shoulders, a broad chest and a belly. I make his shirts because I haven't been able to alter one that is big enough for his belly and fits in his shoulders.

I've never been to a tailor but I have a looooot of flannels that I wish were just a little smaller. I called a tailor today just to ask how much labor and cost go into tailoring a shirt so I could get an idea on a reasonable number to have done. It's been fun talking to them and learning how it works from videos like this. It was always such a mystery to me. I really thought you had to take all the stitching out and break it down into parts to work on each part separately lol so I'm glad that's not the case at least, but this definitely doesn't look easy!

This should cost the customer a lot of money given the amount of work that goes into such an alteration job! It's beyond time-consuming and requires so much skill and sewing knowledge. I love this video! I love how you mark and measure everything with your ruler and chalk before proceeding with your alterations. This makes your alterations on both sides of the garment very precise. I would love to see a video on exactly how you would determine and proceed with the altering of the hemline for a man's shirt, making it one of those that can be left untucked. Getting that perfect length and hemline all around, is difficult. Is there an "average" line that you follow when you make this alteration? I get many requests for this alteration, but it always takes me too much time to determine the curve and the length. I LOVE the use of the ban roll! I am so happy to have found you!

Hi @downtown tailoring. Thanks so much for the video's. I've just started learning to tailor and find matching up a flat fell on a shirt really difficult to do. Do you have any examples of the opposite problem. In order for a shirt to fit me I need to get a 20 or 21 even 22 in neck to get enough material but my neck size is only 18. How do you reduce neck the without having a line for a seem down the middle of the back of the collar?
@DowntownTailoring
@DowntownTailoring 3 жыл бұрын
Yes. This is almost impossible because the neck is cut on a curve at the tips and straight at the middle. The only way you could possibly do it is by sacrificing the width of the collar by a lot. This or making a line on the middle. Or buying a second shirt to combine the parts. Just brainstorming. Cheers.
@MackMcKenzie
@MackMcKenzie 3 жыл бұрын
@@DowntownTailoring I will have to watch more videos on how to reduce sizes without bunching. I may try to cut off the collar and add a new. it still might be cheaper than a custom tailored shirt, which is my only other option.

Why do you take in the sides and make darts? I always thought you do one or the other. A tailor told me you either take in side or make darts for a better fit
@DowntownTailoring
@DowntownTailoring 2 жыл бұрын
I think your tailor doesn't want to make double work. You take in to reduce the size and give better shape. And the darts are to accommodate a very curvy back. Most of the time we try to do one job or the other just to keep the bill lower for our customers, but both jobs at the same time often yield better results. I hope this helps 😊

@DowntownTailoring

I know what you mean. And the answer is very personal. The truth is that is very difficult to find a shirt that fits great. So it's a matter of choice: Do I care for have it perfect and spent a lot of money or not ⚖ When you are self conscious It's a tough choice.
