This reminds me of that other forgotten classic: Elden Ring! Seems like last February when it came out, and now it's almost August. Man... 5 months really flew by. "A Forgotten Classic" the heck is that title? No one forgot about the game, they just moved on after finishing it. Not every game has replay value, nor does it need replay value. I tried the first game and disliked it a lot due to the gameplay, despite loving the setting and interesting story. Seeing the second game having the same gameplay, made me not want to waste the money on a game I won't enjoy. That doesn't mean we "forgot"

I felt the same about combat because I was playing it like HZD, but after a few hours put in I understood that I needed to play it like a hunter and not like a marksman. I needed to stake out my prey and respect their resistances. The devs knew HZD was unbalanced and so they really added impediments so we wouldn't just rely on a sharpshot bow hahaha 😅

Not going back into the argument too much but HZD had better overall fighting than HFW. In the first one dodging felt good and integrated in your movement, melee was actually useful as a backup and stealth was more satisfying. In the second one dodging was nerved to death, melee was only useful on humans, machines were way to aggressive and up in your face to actually pull off cool combos and stealth pretty much was ruined too with the aggro machines. No perma-overrides without fiddling with armor and perks and so n and so on. Too many useless weapons, too many useless gameplay perks (since you have a limited amount that you can activate) and too much "I love you Aloy, you are a hero"

I'm glad they changed dodging...that's all I was doing 90% and that made it too easy, melee isn't even up for discuss with just generic heavy and light attacks and that's it in the first game. machines being aggressive is a huge plus and only somebody who's bad at forbidden west would say otherwise. more weapons gives you variety and what you deem useless will definitely help somebody who wants to try a different playstyle. it's not like they force you to use every single weapon like what are you even saying lol.

Like others have said, feels a bit silly calling this a "forgotten classic" when the game is barely 5 months old. That said, I have mixed feelings about the game. It does some things really well, but also has some shockingly bad game design and balance decisions and a story that felt like they ran out of time at the end that are head scratching for a 5 year dev cycle. It has gotten a little better since launch, but there's no fixing the rushed story end at this point. I do feel like the game was definitely forgotten quickly after launch and part of that was due to Elden Ring, but the rough launch state of the game IMHO is also largely responsible.

Oof, I might need to get back into it. I stopped after aloy didn't let me finish a simple fetch quest without telling me what to do every step of the way, and I mean every single step. Not like Lara - she starts talking after minutes without progress. Aloy is like: I need to get down there. Let me check the wall I'm To close. I need to back off (objective marker changes to farther away, you go there...) I should be able to scan it from here. I can climb on the left. All within 45sec. 😅

It failed to improve on the gameplay from the first game and instead focused on more dialogue and cutscenes. I think people let the repetitive nature of the first game slide because it was a new IP from an unknown studio, but people expected a bigger improvement. It didn't help that they wanted people to think this was going to be a next-gen experience when really it's just a PS4 game.

I know some had issues with the story and I would like a longer video about one day. However, while trying not to spoil the ending, I think the escalation of the stakes at the end makes sense for the themes of the franchise. The whole game is a criticism of hubris, greed, and the current issues our society could face in the very near future. The writers were given a single premise: a tribal setting where you fight large robots. Yet they came up with this amazing story and somehow made everything connect and make sense with strong themes and memorable characters.

Awesome video, I definitely agree with your opinion, except for the fact that I have around 600 hours into the game full of 100% playthroughs, speed runs, and just wondering around hunting machines and finding ways to kill them more efficiently by only using hunter arrows (it's just my preferred way of playing). Wow thank you, just recently got a ps5 with this game (I never played zero dawn) and I was struggling with the combat since I was just randomly shooting at yellow spots hopping to do any damage not really understanding the different properties of each weapon and element making it very sloggy and spongy, this review really helped expand and open my eyes to the possibilities can’t wait to get off of work and play again with this new knowledge I feel I’ll do great now thanks!!!

Thanks for making this video, I feel like there is so much potential with this game. The world to explore, the unique characters you meet on missions and let's not forget the machines. Just makes this game feel so massive, by all rights it should be impossible to ignore it let alone forget about it. Yet it has gotten to a point where as a huge horizon forbidden west fan, am grateful for any videos I can find like this one, going into detail about what makes this game unique. Simply because I hardly see any. Regardless, the community is still going strong, plus, we still have a VR game as well as a DLC coming up. So who knows, maybe it might blow up and get the attention it most definitely deservers.

That's a problem with most open world games. I think the world here is much more interesting than BotW since the biomes are all so distinct and detailed.

Horizon was way better than elden ring and that comes from someone that played through it with 4 different characters and builds. P.s. you can roll 5 times if you slot the evader +2 weave in your outfit or even 7 times if you slot it in an outfit that already has the evader perk

So many reviewers did this game dirty. Everyone called it "another bland open world ubisoft type clone". Dunkey, Girlfriend reviews stand out as being pretty egregious. At best people were mediocre on it and literally EVERYONE joked about how they had to get through it quick because Elden Ring was coming. Agree with all your points.

This game is fantastic and was over shadowed by Elden Ring but man it's not really forgotten lol. I got the platinum for both ER and this both were great experiences.

Besides the obvious elden ring problem.. I am quite disappointed in this game sadly... While combat is good (it definitely improved a lot), and presentation is obviously stellar, the story suffered greatly (it veered too much into fantasy IMO), and the exploration, navigation, climbing and basically all gameplay outside of combat is extremely dated. It's not sth I'd categorize as bad.. I'd just say it's staying like 8 years behind. My main gripe is very personal though. Aloy as a character, just... fumbled.. in comparison to ZD. In the first one, you could understand why aloy was who she was, but by now her personality just comes across as a but ridiculous to me. She didn't grow as a character, and that sucks.

The good news is, most people's takes on big games are "very personal" and subjective af. Anyone who tries to state as a fact that any huge game is "bad", is just an unintelligent person who thinks their own standards, preferences and experiences are objective. I don’t know why he thinks HZD wasn’t heavily dependent upon preparation, selecting the best equipment for a particular opponent, doing as much damage as possible from stealth and traps, etc. I almost never got into any fight by wading in and trying to beat down any machine without doing ALL of these things. If I did, I nearly always died. I really enjoyed Zero Dawn (except for the extremely annoying personality of its heroine) precisely because of the relative ineffectiveness of weapons and the limited armor that forced you to play a circumspect strategy and whittle down the machines patiently. I am not contemplating buying this game because, in my view, they’ve overcomplicated combat and added arbitrary elements to up the “Wow!” factor.

idk in a normal playthrough I was able to mostly use regular, fire, and shock pretty quickly without much variation or preparation. never felt like it really required me to experiment or forced me to use a specific sequence of skills

A very nice overview of this masterpiece. If you own a PS5 it would be a sin not to play this game and it’s predecessor. Forgotten no way, pick it up after you’re done with Elden Ring you won’t be disappointed.

Zero Dawn was actually the first game that ever made me go for the Platinum... It's a fantastic franchise, yet i can't help but feel that they just screw themselfs over every time. I understand that the devs are proud of their work, but they were pretty cocky and didn't learn from BOTW - Guerrilla just doesn't stand a chance against such experienced and respected teams like FromSoftware or Nintendo...And it's a shame that Sony didn't see this

Zero Dawn still ended up selling more than 15 million copies, so I don't see how anyone can say it wasn't a hit. I'm sure Forbidden West will do similar numbers, especially when everyone can freely buy a PS5.

To be honest it's been the biggest disappointment of 2022 for me. A real letdown in terms of story and its characters. Very little improvement in terms of gameplay too. I'm not surprised so many ignored it when it released.

@@torezgermy2 well months after release sales are picking up but that's likely because of price drops. It was quite buggy at launch and discussion quickly moved onto elden ring for obvious reasons. I played it and platinumed it then traded it back in. I just knew I'd never want to replay it.

@@torezgermy2 I platinumed it so I'd done everything in it and could trade it in without any guilt. Not because I liked it that much. I was pretty happy to be done with it. I got it in may three months after launch for 40 so that was almost a 50% discount. Still encountered a game breaking bug and had to load an earlier save though. That never happened to me in elden ring. Horizon 2 was one of the buggiest first party games I've played on playstation.

You can play it in a very BotW style if you want, just turn off the various map markers using the Filter option and follow the verbal directions people give you for quests and explore however you want to find other stuff.

What an amazing video review/analysis, well done. 100% agree on all, and although I don’t care about the melee for not being near where it should be as I prefer not using it in ranged based games, I do understand that’s just me so I appreciate the need of it. It is a shame that your video doesn’t have more views for many reasons. Firstly is very well made and secondly, as the purpose of this video, it hasn’t reached enough big audience for people who haven’t played it to see what this classic is about and give it a try. This game was just zero dawn with pretty graphics and a small handful of new Dino’s. Combat was lackluster, the side quests were extremely boring and repetitive and it overall introduced nothing new or interesting too what could’ve been an incredible sequel to one of the best ps4 games.

Both FW and ZD have been on my list for a long time. i was gonna go for both early this year but then came Elden Ring along and as a soulsvet that just had priority and i only had time for one huge open world game. Sony really didn't do Horizon any with favors with the release schedule...

It's damn near impossible to buy a new PS5 at the moment that doesn't have Forbidden West bundled in (at full price no less) as these bundles are all that Sony is supplying to outlets. So more people are experiencing it, whether they want to or not

Going rate is about half what you would have paid for it in the bundle but it's something if you think it's not a game for you (it wasn't for me). It irks me because Sony are now bragging about their "second wind" of sales, neglecting to mention they're basically forcing anyone who wants a PS5 to buy it

I completely agree. Horizon FW is a masterpiece of modern gaming. It took me 1/3 of the game to pick up on the combat system. And while I agree the melee combat could use some work, I still put it to good use and used it in almost every encounter. The blue orb it creates on you opponent is extremely powerful. If done correctly you can jump an unassuming distance when releasing a charged melee. I hope over time Horizon FW is acknowledged for its greatness. I would love to see a third installment. It’s probably the most beautiful game I’ve ever played.

It doesn't really help that it is Sony console-exclusive. They should just release it everywhere. Elden Ring was big because it was not limited to a single console. It's a shame because even Zero Dawn could've been bigger had it been released in PC earlier. Personally, of all the Sony games, Zero Dawn was my favorite in PC.

Wow a well made video mostly talking about the amazing combat from an obviously very skilled player. Most ppl who haven't played it think its all graphics but trust me I've sunk over 150hrs into this game and platinumed it. I'm now playing on NG+ ultra hard. The combat is so much fun and well made even the melee is great once you learn the different combos but I also agree that we need a shield and parry mechanic in the next game of dlc. Bravo!
