+James Lu There is a lot of fructose in fruit actually. Glucose is present in most lifeforms. Sucrose, or table sugar, is a combination of fructose and glucose. None of the three to my knowledge are considered "bad shit", though sucrose and fructose tend to be linked to obesity. That can probably be put down to bad lifestyle choices however.

@willowhite19958 жыл бұрын
gotta love that the one time Lewis isn't completely talking out of his arse he still gets a horde of misinformed fans trying to correct him :P It's very simple, sugar is carbohydrate and eating too much carbohydrate makes your body overload and store the excess glucose as fat, so just have a balanced diet and don't justify your sugar addiction by insisting that because something says it's got fruit in it it's good for you. Also don't just change your diet and expect to lose weight, if you lead a sedentary lifestyle you aren't going to make much difference as you still won't be doing enough exercise to trigger your body to start using all that excess glucose-come-energy stored as fat.
@johnsonjj1178 жыл бұрын
Lewis also said no exercise probably wasn't a cause for the hypothetical person's obesity. So he's kind of talking out of his ass. I do agree that sugar is sugar, but all natural fruit juice is healthier than an equal amount of soda. Depending on what type of fruit it is, it could have up to half the sugar content as soda. Granted I blend my fruits in order to maintain the fiber and add vegetables which is loads healthier than soda so I'm not worried either way
@oontzin8 жыл бұрын
+Will White My sentiments exactly. But remembering this is KZbin and the internet, I'm not too surprised. They tend to cultivate mob mentalities via memes. This channel's meme evolving to "Lewis spews BS thus he never knows what he talks about despite his convictions." People tend to be averse to opinionated folks like Lewis, but it's a shame that he's at the point where he won't be taken seriously and brushed off even if he says something truthful. In regards to what Lewis was saying, I understood the general meaning of what he was trying to convey. For example, when he was saying something to the effect of all sugar is sugar whether from fruit juice or coke he probably meant sugar on its own, and in general, is a detriment to health. He even said in the video that fruit itself makes up for the sugar by providing other things of value but sees fruit juice as bad as coke due to the overwhelming amount of sugar in it which overrides the possible benefits of juice. One more thing - although I am a fan of Sips and his humor - I was disappointed in Sips for taking Lewis' reasonable statements out of context even if for the attempt and sake of humor. It is that type of thing that's most abhorrent in journalism and which the public criticizes it for. People can be a bit hypocritical at times, I suppose.

(EDITED) Your partly wrong about fruit Lewis, And fruit juice is like eating more than one fruit except your not getting the fiber and stuff, but fruit juice is still better than dining Coke, because it's high in vitamins.
@Edarric8 жыл бұрын
+Judah Licharowicz Lewis is talking about weight I'm pretty sure & what turns into most glucose. Vitamins are irrelevant. When it comes to fruit JUICE, there isn't enough fiber and solid parts for your body to actually use up any of the glucose it's gaining from the sugar in it, generally fructose. So it's purely gaining and it's not at all similar to eating a fruit. Sucrose is different but the difference has no relevance when it comes to weight gain.
@kurojima8 жыл бұрын
+Judah Licharowicz actually not that true, fruit juice has often more sugar than coke, and almost negligible amounts of vitamins, because its often long dead juices - fruit juices available in markets sit over a year in a tank and then they add a flavor pack to make this dead rot taste like fruit juice - the only good way to consume fruit juice would be to actually get the fruit and make the juice yourself - but then you are even better of just eating the fruit
@TheOnlyGhxst8 жыл бұрын

Lewis, you went to school for chemistry. How do you know know the difference between fructose and cane sugar?
@wildstyle98758 жыл бұрын
+Nick Adams fructose is a compound cane sugar is made of fructose bonded to glucose, we synthesize this sugar to make is more concentrated and sweater and now it's become so easy, cheaper as well, all types of sugars are bad in large amounts in any form, i think this is what Lewis is trying to say, the form of sugar doesn't really change anything calorie wise

@niklas90938 жыл бұрын
+Nick Adams I've been thinking of this the entire episode. Thank you! And all you other people thinking "carbs are carbs", no. There are big structural differences between monosaccharides and starch, as well as in the way the body breaks it down and absorbs it in the small intestine. The intestine can only absorb monosaccharides (glucose, fructose) found in your common candy and alot of processed food (such as the yoghurt they were talking about in the video). Starch, found in more "healthier foods" (fruits, vegetables, etc.) is composed of big chains of monosaccharides that needs to be broken down before being absorbed. While it's the same molecules absorbed in both cases, the candy will already be ready to be taken up in it's entirety, giving you a big rush in blood sugar and as a result, insulin (which drives type-2-diabetes). The body will be unable to use all of this glucose in making glycogen and burning it, and so it will be converted into fats. When you eat "healthy" carbs, however, the release of monosaccharides will be much slower and during a longer time period, giving less of a sugar rush and giving the body more time to process it into energy and glycogen throughout the day.

@Luciefurrr8 жыл бұрын
Don't get the idea that because the sugar composition is the same in fruit and cake, they're interchangeable. (Seriously, they're not.) For one thing, fruit offers good stuff like vitamins, antioxidants and water, while candy and desserts are nutritionally void. Fruit also tends to have less sugar by volume. Half a cup of strawberries: 3.5 grams of sugar. Half a cup of strawberry ice cream: 15 grams.
@mistro13288 жыл бұрын
+Lucie Darling I think that Lewis' key point is that fruit juice, not normal fruit is bad for you and it is, the main reasons being that that you drink the equivalent of many more pieces of fruit than you would ever feasibly eat meaning that it contains around a gram of sugar per 10ml and how there is next to no fibre like normal fruit which would help to block the absorption of fructose, in most fruit juices there are next to no nutrients or vitamins so you also have to take into account how it does naturally seem healthy so you're likely going to drink more than other drinks,.

The one thing people don't seem to talk about much is the quantity of food most people eat. If you spend most of your day sitting down in front of a PC you don't need three large meals a day. For me at least being a fairly inactive person a small breakfast, a small lunch and one normal sized meal in the evening is fine. I think it's very easy to eat simply for enjoyment and not because you actually need to and a lot of people are simply habitually consuming more food than they need. Also snacking between meals is a big contributor towards gaining weight because you are effectively adding another meal, possibly even two every day.

It's rare, but for once I'm siding with *some* of Lewis' argument about sugars being the "same". On the subject on glucose and fructose, fructose is, at least as - if not slightly more - easily stored in the body as fat deposits when consumed, as glucose is, thus it's not going to make you lose a whole lot of weight just by switching from sugary coke to fruit juice (if the amount remains roughly the same). On a side note however, fruit juice does contain a lot of vitamins, and most fruit by itself contain fibers, which all are good for you.

Concerning Mcdonalds and all day breakfast, it's all about logistics. We have two grills, one for regular burgers, cheeseburgers, doubles and big macs and another grill for quarter pounders and promotional burgers. Now where does egg and sausage fit into that? We would have to buy two additional grills which are ridiculously expensive and ridiculously big, now where do we then stick these grills? Moving on from that, the way we cook breakfast is completely different to that of the regular menu, it's not as simple as adding new menu items. (happy to elaborate) now stop complaining you cant have all day breakfast unless you're willing to pay an arm and a leg for it.

All sugar are not equal, it is not all the same molecule. Sugars are in molecular chains and can be found associated with other molecules so what matters is how available are the sugars. Any product with added sugars contain chemically refined sugar which is a 100% available. So Sips is right, drinking fruit juice shouldn't be the same than drinking coke. The thing is the juices you can buy in the supermarkets and such are not natural juices and also have added sugar. And doing exercise is always good, always. But exercise does not compensate bad habits, is not like a mathematical formula when you add calories and then discount them so you have a small number, this is not how we work it is not how living organisms work.

Fructose and sucrose are different things! But for many packaged fruit juices they add a ton of refined sugar to make them taste better and last longer, so he's not technically wrong. Instead of saying 'eat healthy' say 'eat fewer calories' to lose weight. Genetics and metabolism link is a myth, we all have essentially the same caloric needs (proportional to to height weight and age). You just inherit your eating habits from your parents, which is why you get fat families etc. The really overweight should calorie count to lose weight before exercising so they don't pack in their knees.
