I love how these "traditionalists" have no idea about the traditions they're trying to preserve. Back in the 1930s, "playing the field" was the most common mode of dating among young people in America, and "going steady" didn't start to become popular until the 1940s. In those days, dating was much more of a casual affair where you'd get to know lots of different people and see who you clicked with, with fairly low levels of commitment and intimacy (since the sexual revolution hadn't happened yet), and even when going steady became popular, often people would still play the field for a bit before going steady with someone. In fact, the high-necked puritans of the day were clutching their pearls over kids "going steady" because the higher level of commitment would lead to sex, and some parents would impose rules on their children not to date the same person twice in a row. The "courtship" model, or as this incel calls it, "dating with marriage in mind," was never the dominant mode of dating in America for as long as dating has been a thing (which is not long, to be fair). It's a reactionary model that didn't emerge until after the sexual revolution, and demands both high commitment and no intimacy, which is a balance that we as humans don't naturally keep, and therefore is setting people up for failure. The level of commitment in courtship relationships is far higher than how "going steady" usually was, and the pearl-clutchers of the 40s and 50s would have fainted at the idea. TL;DR: Hookup culture *is* the return to tradition

He says "though it history there was no birth control" actually various cultures all throughout time have had forms of contraception and birth control. Some may not have been that good but it's what they had. (Sea sponges, crocodile dung, sheep intestine, parsley, black cohosh ect.) Humans have been trying to control pregnancy always (1950s hormonal BC is just a new way)

I've never quite understood the necessity that if you marry, you _have_ to stay together. If it happens, it happens, sure. But like, there are so many factors, and changing circumstances, and things I don't even have the wherewithal to think about in my situation. Things change, and not everyone has the same needs, nor can they provide the same things. Sometimes people moved way too fast, etc. etc. etc. I still have fairly high opinions of marriage, I personally think its a wonderful thing, but like, it doesn't need to have the societal weight that it does, nor the hyper binding principles behind it.
@vylbird8014
@vylbird8014 3 жыл бұрын
History. Remember that reliable contraception for the masses only became available in the 1960s, and even then it faced tremendous social opposition. Prior to that, marriage meant sex and sex meant children - which was a good reason for that marriage to be fixed long-term. Something that has been worked out since ancient times. Life expectancy was also rather a lot shorter. Social attitudes have lagged behind the practical circumstances.

I'm actually anti waiting until marriage, but unlike people who want other people to wait until marriage, I don't want to legislate people to have to do it before marriage even though I think it would improve their sex life. Honestly, I think if you get some experience beforehand and then when you're ready to start looking into long term relationships you talk to them to make sure it will work and then don't have sex until you get married, that would make some more sense but you shouldn't be so scared of failing before getting married that you get married just to have sex.

She had mild anxiety before quarantine but during quarantine it has gotten a lot worse. Fortunately in this respect therapy and natural medicines have been able to help her some, it just doesn't make sense to me that she doesn't really take care of her health any other time except when it comes to medicine

one of the saddest things about a lot of incels is that they let their own community convince them they're physically ugly and their interests + features aren't worthy of loving; most incels i've seen are perfectly good looking and likely have met several people who did want to love and appreciate them, only to run from those people convinced by their own ingroup that they'll never be worth anyone's affection. incels make me sad, man.

Why are you taking your dates to Dennys. Like once in awhile, it's late, sure. But 3 times? Treat your partner with some respect and take them some place nice.

Some of us under capitalism don't have the money for "nice." For some of us Denny's IS nice and on a casual date it's, like, Subway. Sad? Fight for better wages. You shouldn't have to break yourself to impress someone.

@@NieroshaiTheSable My argument is more on what he considers hook up culture. His specific statement is that all you have to do is take someone to Denny's 3 times to get laid, which to me, seems like he doesn't hold a lot of value in dating as I don't hold Denny's as somewhere I'd take someone if I was going out on a date. At least, not in the beginning of a relationship. Instead of jumping up my ass about fighting for better wages, try to understand the context of the argument I'm making. This isn't an argument about better wages (which I do fight for where I can. I'm part of a labor union that does just that), but rather his sad commentary on "hook up culture". If Denny's or Subway is your jam or all you can afford, have at it. Or do a home cooked meal. Whatever works, just don't be getting upset cause of what some sarcastic asshole like me says on a video.

Having a baby with someone doesnt chemically bond you to that person...

I'm as closely bonded to someone I play D&D with as I ever was with my ex I dated for 7 years. Sexual chemicals may encourage bonding, but idiots like Discount Doyle seem to think screwing superglues your souls together.

The idea that people like him are against birth control is so scary to me. They want to force women to give birth, it's horrifying.

Birth control did not lead to Aids. Dieting led to aids. Although back in my day (I'm a Boomer) it was called Ayds and it was caused by a diet candy. This is why I'm a fat bastard. Old, too. Now listen to me you young whipper-snappers, back in my day......ZZzzzz.
