I love how these "traditionalists" have no idea about the traditions they're trying to preserve. Back in the 1930s, "playing the field" was the most common mode of dating among young people in America, and "going steady" didn't start to become popular until the 1940s. In those days, dating was much more of a casual affair where you'd get to know lots of different people and see who you clicked with, with fairly low levels of commitment and intimacy (since the sexual revolution hadn't happened yet), and even when going steady became popular, often people would still play the field for a bit before going steady with someone. In fact, the high-necked puritans of the day were clutching their pearls over kids "going steady" because the higher level of commitment would lead to sex, and some parents would impose rules on their children not to date the same person twice in a row. The "courtship" model, or as this incel calls it, "dating with marriage in mind," was never the dominant mode of dating in America for as long as dating has been a thing (which is not long, to be fair). It's a reactionary model that didn't emerge until after the sexual revolution, and demands both high commitment and no intimacy, which is a balance that we as humans don't naturally keep, and therefore is setting people up for failure. The level of commitment in courtship relationships is far higher than how "going steady" usually was, and the pearl-clutchers of the 40s and 50s would have fainted at the idea. TL;DR: Hookup culture *is* the return to tradition

I've never quite understood the necessity that if you marry, you _have_ to stay together. If it happens, it happens, sure. But like, there are so many factors, and changing circumstances, and things I don't even have the wherewithal to think about in my situation. Things change, and not everyone has the same needs, nor can they provide the same things. Sometimes people moved way too fast, etc. etc. etc. I still have fairly high opinions of marriage, I personally think its a wonderful thing, but like, it doesn't need to have the societal weight that it does, nor the hyper binding principles behind it.
@vylbird80143 жыл бұрын
History. Remember that reliable contraception for the masses only became available in the 1960s, and even then it faced tremendous social opposition. Prior to that, marriage meant sex and sex meant children - which was a good reason for that marriage to be fixed long-term. Something that has been worked out since ancient times. Life expectancy was also rather a lot shorter. Social attitudes have lagged behind the practical circumstances.
