WOW.... that Martin '55 D28 just booooomed from the very first note you struck.👍👍 BUT what a wonderful comparison in 'real time' of the tone and color of these instruments.... I cannot imagine another channel affording the opportunity to 'hear' the same picking of the same tunes by the same fingers in rapid succession. It's very, very cool.

Oh my favorites are all the old Martins. Each has a unique sound but definitely they are that "Martin" sound. Love hearing these RLNP's. Same for Sunday String Alongs. Glad you are still playing the Travis tunes and that helps keep memory of his work alive. You did good. Thanks for all you do.

That was a lot of fun. To my ear the first D28 was best, the Bedell is a substantial guitar but a bit boomy for me. So you can just send the other two to me by UPS and it'll be fine.

I'm floored over here! =) I played a Bedell a couple years back that was a Brazilian dreadnought with a Adi top if memory serves me, it was a fantastic guitar. I have a few in my Brazilian collection I like to say as well. My top favorites are a 97' Taylor GA Brazilian and recently received Heinonen SJ Cedar/Brazilian apprenticed under Jim Olson. Thanks Doyle!

Wow Doyle! I’ve listened to this comparison 4 times in a row. So hard to make a choice. The brightest sounding of the four is the newer D45. If I had to choose myself…I’d be torn between the vintage D45 for its full balanced sound and I also love the clarity and presence of the newer D45. The 55 D28 sounds beautiful as always and that Bedell is so close in punch and volume it’s almost scary! Four incredible sounding guitars. I guess if I had to make a choice overall for tone I guess it would be the prewar D45. I LOVE THESE COMPARISONS with your tremendous talent attached. Made my night!

The pick of the litter to me was the first D45 . I used to have martins and now play an all mahogany Babicz Spider which is amazing in every way including playability and the sound is superb Also a beautiful instrument well balanced sound and an adjustable neck that is constantly adjustable action which can be changed without changing tune .

Man that D-28 sounds so beautiful. I have a 2013 D-28 Shade Top that doesn't have that tone, but then again it's not Brazilian rosewood either. But I wish I had gotten an HD-28 because of the scalloped bracing. But I do love my 28.

There is something to be said for Brazilian rosewood. The Bedell is probably the most affordable Brazilian rosewood guitar out there and Bedell used old rosewood cut before the trade restrictions.

Dad’s old guitar. Dad bought an old Silvertone F hole guitar when I was very young. It has to be close to ninety years old or older. I haven’t played it in a long time and I kept it in it’s original case in the closet. The old case was made out of some kind of paper board and was just a ragged shel that had been coming apart for sixty years or more. I made the mistake of not loosing the strings enough and the tension pulled the neck away from the back. Many other areas of deterioration exist. I remember loaning it to Ben Sanders to play a gig when I was ten or so and Dad was upset and made me go and get it back. I played it in grade school at the school carnival. I played it at the Preatorium club in Oak Cliff just south of the Forrest ave bridge and many other places over the years. Now it is almost beyond repair. What should I do? A luthier would charge hundreds maybe thousands to repair it to pristine or even to playable condition. The guitar would be worth almost nothing no matter what condition it was in. A new case would cost about two hundred dollars. Basically the question is, what is it worth for nostalga as a keepsake from my childhood? I don’t seem to come to a conclusion or answer for that question. You are the greatest player of all times in my opinion. Always loved you and still do.

DOYLE DYKES -- New Bedell and old Martins In under nine minutes Doyle Dykes provided fans of his LATE NIGHT PICKIN' KZbin show with an entertaining comparison of "old versus new" and I had to respond: The BEDELL has (to my ears) a more balanced sound -- more like a Gibson than a Martin. Which made me wonder how the Bedell would compare to your Olson (James Taylor's weapon-of-choice). But what you did tonight was a joy to our ears -- trying as we must to hear the subtle differences in each splendid specimen of the luthiers' art. You played each of these beautiful instruments at least twice -- in answer to my favorite question from your previous show -- from a die-hard Martin fan who sought your agreement that "Martins are the best guitars." Right? Permit an aside: Chet Atkins gave me some advice I finally acted upon. That I should "get a Gibson, an old one that's been played a lot. They sound so fine." That was the summer of '71. On a winter's day (2008) I took a Southern (Northern) Jumbo down from the wall at Long & McQuade -- the largest Gibson dealer in Winnipeg. And the moment I played it, it spoke to me: In my mind's ear, a Female voice (a 'Gibson Girl' as Chet would say) said loud and clear: "I'm the one you've been waiting for. Take me home." My Irene said, "It can be your Christmas present, your birthday gift and next year's Christmas present too." In the music store Martins have a better bass, and brighter treble sounds. But home alone, my Gibson has a sound I can play by the hour and never tire of hearing. All this, from another (unique) Random Late Night Pickin' show. Which is to say, Thanks, Doyle Dykes! Celebrated elsewhere this night [search] " Great Melody, Great Lyric, Great Rendition, Songwriting Workshop, Harmony Central "
