Dozens of people walked out at Duke University's commencement ceremony in protest of guest speaker Jerry Seinfeld. The famous comedian has voiced his support for Israel in its conflict with Hamas in the Middle East. The Duke incident wasn't the only protest that interrupted a graduation ceremony, as protesters also disrupted the commencement at UNC-Chapel Hill. #Palestine #Politics #News
Amid pro-Palestinian protests on the campuses of UNC Charlotte and UNC Chapel Hill, debate continues over their impact on student life.
At UNC Charlotte, school officials accused some protesters of vandalism and disruption of classes and final exams.
On WCNC's Flashpoint, two sides disagreed with each other.
"The students are, at UNC Charlotte, are actually setting an example for the entire world to see they have stood up and stood by their principles and are willing to risk their educational futures and their careers and their livelihoods to stand on the side of justice," Jena Awad, President of Charlotte United for Palestine, said.
Despite several questions, Awad declined to say what limits should be placed on protests.
On the other side, the Co-founder of North Carolina Coalition for Israel argued the protests at Chapel Hill fostered an unsafe and disruptive environment for students.
"There were some young people trying to graduate. They had their graduation uniforms on and they were trying to have nice photos in different parts of the quad. But they couldn't because the encampment was there. And it just didn't seem fair to these young people who were trying to graduate," Amy Rosenthal, Ph.D., said.

"From what", good starting point for a conversation about education! Critics say that the state of Israel is an Apartheid. Why would they say that? I would argue that the major factors are Paragraphs 1 and 6 in their basic law, their version of the constitution. Through the laws prioritizing Jewish Settlements, Palestinian citizens of Israel (not Gaza etc) are effectively banned from living in 80% of places. They are treated differently by the justice system and have fewer rights. That is only the Israeli territories though. In the occupied areas like the Westbank the separation goes further. Jewish and Palestinian citizens there for example have different license plates. The green ones aren't allowed to drive anywhere in Israel, in the Westbank they are subject to frequent interrogations at the many checkpoints while Israelis can use the roads freely. The resources of the land belong as per international human rights to the Palestinians, not the occupiers. Despite this, most of the drinking water in this area is used by the Jewish citizens with Wells having been stolen from Palestinian people and surrounded with armed protection. When the world raised many millions in funds to build water infrastructure for Palestinians, the Israeli forces destroyed almost all of it while Israel sends its untreated waste water back to them, poluting the land. The result of all of this is that on average, Palestinian citizens in the occupied territories have 20 litres of water at their disposal per day. This is the bare minimum in emergency situations according to the WHO. While Jewish settlers (settling there against international law) have as much as they like. Just one example. Now, in the Gaza Strip, the situation is, again, even worse. Israeli forces may have retreated from the area, but their government still has much control over almost every aspect of their life. They control and limit their internet access, food (their Leaders have said they want to let in just barely enough to survive on), construction materials and what can be built in general. They also have very little and poor water of which only a small amount is truly safe to drink. Since the blockade worsened even more and with the lack of fuel, they cant run water desalination units, making especially children sick. Through the frequent checks and constant surveillance, Israel has a great database on every single Palestinian. When the people of Gaza have mostly peacefully demonstrated against this, though few threw stones etc., the IDF has shot many of them, killing over 200, including dozens of children and many women, severly wounding over thousand. An International independent investigation found that at most 2 deaths could justifiably be considered in self defence. Later reports showed how IDF snipers were targeting the crowds and seeing, who could shoot the most kneecaps. In all areas, Palestinian people including children have been captured by Israeli forces who accused them of crimes but in multiple cases never provided evidence or a trial. What should they be free from? The ultimate conclusion of Zionism is that only Jewish people in this land will be able to live freely. And while this goal has been pursued by those like Itamar Ben-Gvir for a long time, in 2018 this was also written into the law.

Would Palestinians do the same if they had Israel's power? Manifestly not.

Any student who walked out on either side of the isle in protest should not get their diploma. Most of them don’t even understand what is really going on. They are either getting paid to do it m, or they have been so well indoctrinated, they are doing what the professors are pushing. Non of them has the right to destroy graduation day for anyone, just as the educators have no right to thrash anyone for taking a different stance than they do. Their teachings should not be biased.
