At about 19:15 that pile of clay-like cement could double as dinosaur droppings. I raised two boys and keep thinking how fun it would have been to convince them that dinosaurs had stopped by during the night. :) I am really enjoying your just-discovered videos -- thank you!

Was just about to give up on my notion that I could get a clay-like substance out of cement......when boom there you were spouting off the ingredients. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I just love your bridge.God Bless you Mr. Perry

Thank you. I was out working on it some more today, but work was slow. It was 95 degrees and humid as the tropics. I have to quit working every 15 minutes and drink a glass of water. Haven't sweated this hard since basic training. I'm getting the planks and steps attached and promised my granddaughter she could cross the bridge next weekend, so I have to push forward, regardless of temperatures.

Yes, but I wouldn't think of adding it to my mixes. It is, essentially, an air-entrainment admix, something that defeats the purpose of particle-packing and density of my mix. It would make the mix less dense.because of the tiny bubbles created.

I'm glad you enjoyed the visit. I hope you also learned something for your class lesson. Your teacher should bring your class through the yard again during the winter so you can see how the ecosystem changes with the seasons. The pond also looks its best from May through August. Maybe you can bring your parents with you and visit then, too.

Wow.....just wow!!!!!! Thank you so much for the recipe for the cement that is like clay. Do you have it written down where I could read it? I could not quite hear it all. I am working on making a cement Giraffe. Thank you again from northern Minnesota, near the Canadian border!
@dperry4282 жыл бұрын
This particular mix is 1 part sand, 1 part cement, 10% metakaolin (10% of the cement content), 8% silica fume (8% of the cement content) PVA fiber and liquid acryliic bonding agent/admix in the water. Diluted from a stock emulsion of 50% solids and diluted 3 parts water to 1 part acrylic. When I want to make a mix that is especially useful for application on the underside of an armature, I use a mix of 1/2 part sand to 1 part cement, raise the metakaolin to 20% of the cement content and eliminate the silica fume, as it makes the mix too sticky for underside application and sticks to the gloves and tools. It is important to be very careful in how much liquid is added as it can go from clay to runny soup with just a tiny bit too much liquid. Here is a video of how to mix that second recipe. kzbin.info/www/bejne/m2XNZqSdg6uEe5I

Thank you again for all of the information. I have been working with cement off and on for over 10 years. I love being outside. When we have rainy days, I go in the garage and open all of the doors, and do my cement projects. It truly is fun and rewarding!!!!

My youngest brother and his beau go to Ely quite often. They love canoeing the boundary waters. Usually go at least once a year. He has a special place for the people of Ely. Several years ago, his truck caught fire and they escaped just in time to avoid injury. He was able to save his camera, but his canoe got melted in half. His truck was a total loss, but the people of Ely were very, very helpful in getting them a place to stay and running him around town to get things settled and back on his way home. He bought another truck in Ely. He has a great love for the community.

Hooray! I've been waiting to see the progress on your bridge. Thank you for posting videos of your work; they're very informative. Do you find any of your cement structures cracking? If so, what do you do about it?
@dperry4286 жыл бұрын
For the most part no. Older work, made with older recipes have developed some minor cracks. I had two cracks in my pond wall a few years back as the result of a rare earthquake, the epicenter of which was just 9 miles away. A couple of pathway rocks, made 8 years ago with a common bagged mix have cracked. The additions of metakaolin, silica fume and Xypex have virtually eliminated all cracking. PVA fiber is especially effective at crack prevention. Xypex has the ability to heal minor cracks, preventing them from becoming larger. Should an unacceptable crack develop, a simple slurry of acrylic, cement and Xypex can be applied and, after curing, restained.
@JenniferKClark6 жыл бұрын
dperry428 Thank you. I’ve looked for Xypex, but I can’t find it locally. Where do you purchase it?
@dperry4286 жыл бұрын
First, Xypex is a brand of crystalline waterproofer. There are many brands, such as Penetron, Aquafin, Krystol, Vandex and on and on. If you go to the manufacturer's website, there is usually a link to distributors or an email link to sales that can direct you to a local distributor. Also, check out eBay and Amazon. I found Xypex Concentrate on Amazon. It isn't cheap. I buy my Xypex admix at an industrial supply company. I've also found it at HD Supply Whitecap.

I can this process is labor intensive but yields great results i''m curious what the total cost of all materials might be for a job this size?
@dperry428 Жыл бұрын
That's difficult to access. I calculated to the cost of materials for my fence project at about $1800. The bridge was done over a period of about 3 years, interrupted during that time for me to have three surgeries to replace both my hips and a knee. My guess is that it is less than $500.

Hello, Mr. Perry. Your work is such fun to watch. I would like some feedback about making concrete pavers for my driveway by pouring them in place. That is, I would be allowing each paver to fill any voids in the hard-packed asphalt/dirt and become its own base. I would use a mold and trowel the top so I could control the plane of the top surface, though I would like the top to be rumbly and "cobble stonish." Any suggestions you might have about concrete formula, reinforcement, etc. are welcome.
@dperry4286 жыл бұрын
Keep in mind that I am NOT a concrete expert nor experienced in concrete contracting. I've thought about doing just what you are thinking of doing to my own driveway that is currently asphalt. I used a mold to do the pathway around my pond. kzbin.info/www/bejne/emLSdqGum96XmZo Were I to do my driveway, I'd simply use the same mold over the asphalt but use a UHPC mix like that used on the bridge construction. Metal reinforcement would not be necessary, especially with an enhanced dosage of glass fiber. I'd use a 3 fine silica sand to 1 portland cement mix, 1/2 part glass fiber, 1/2 part PVA fiber with 10% metakaolin, 8% silica fume, 5% CSA (Buzzi Unicem) cement, acrylic admix in the liquid and, since it is a horizontal pour, a small amount of plasticizer to reduce water content. This would give a mix, if done with minimal liquid, that has a compressive strength in excess of 12, 000 - 15,000 PSI
@RhythmBee6 жыл бұрын
So helpful!! Thank you, sir. Were you a concrete expert or experienced contractor, the creative solutions that you employ would seem impossible to you and wouldn't even enter your thought process. After constructing the pavers, would grout or infill be necessary to avoid chipping, etc?
@dperry4286 жыл бұрын
As you know, when you use a mold to create the paving stones, there is a space left between the stones. With my path, I used a trowel to round the edges of the stones down into the space betwen stones. That rounded the edges of the individual stones to prevent chipping those edges, and it also filled the spaces between stones to prevent weed growth within the spaces. One could also grout in the depression left after rounding off each stone. I'd use the same mix to keep the same strength as in the stones. That would be a matter of the finished appearance that is desired.
@edwardmurray22842 жыл бұрын
How much would you estimate the various costs of materials were for your bridge? Individually and sum total, or whatever is practical for you.
@dperry4282 жыл бұрын
I didn't keep track since this project was done over a period of essentially 3 years. I was having pretty serious problems with my leg joints and couldn't work for long periods of time. #3 rebar for a 10 foot section was about $6.50 and I used about 10 pieces. A roll of chicken wire 2ft x 25 ft was about $15. Portland cement 94lb bag was about $12. 5 gal bucket of acrylic admix about $150. Silica fume 50lb bag $65. Metakaolin 40lb bag $50. CSA cement additive 50lb bag $40. PVA fiber 5lb $69. Medium sand 50lb bag $4.50. Acid stain 1 gal. $85. Expanded metal lath sheet 27in x 96 in $16. Roll of tie wire $10. Those are the materials I used, but I couldn't begin to tell you how much of each I used for one specific project. Some materials, like metakaolin, silica fume and CSA are used in small quantities and a bag of each does a lot more than this project. Same with fiber. A 5 gallon bucket of acrylic is diluted with 3 parts water, so that 5 gallon is actually 20 gallons of liquid for making concrete. That's a lot of concrete. A cubic yard of concrete uses about 20 to 25 gallons of liquid. I did an analysis of what my fence cost and it was about $1800. My entire fence was about 2.1 cubic yards of concrete, so you can guess what part of a cubic yard I used in the bridge. I'd guess the materials for the bridge were likely around $300 to $500.
@edwardmurray22842 жыл бұрын
@@dperry428 i would have thought the cost of materials was 10x that

It is always a treat to find you have posted a new video. A question. I would like to edge my pond with faux rocks that extend below the water line. Of course regular concrete would not last the winter. Is adding the latex enough? Have you covered what mix to use in one of your videos? Thanks.
@dperry4286 жыл бұрын
The more water impermeable the mix, the better it will stand up against the weather. My pond is made of concrete using a 3 to 1 sand/cement mix with polypropylene fiber and acrylic in the liquid. It has withstood 12 years of northern Illinois winters. Here's a video from 5 years ago: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f16wgImXlNCLgNE I also now add silica fume in addition to the metakaolin. I also like using a crystalline waterproofer such as Xypex if concrete is going to be in contact with water. It is the ultimate in waterproofing.
