In this video I will show you not only how to parge a wall, but how to sculpt and texture like a professional mason using Rapid Set Mortar Mix! I will teach you basic techniques that can be applied to almost any mason repair or application. I hope this video inspires you to take your masonry to the next level!
(PART B)
I’m working on “Part B” as we speak! Had to deal with some flooding issues and a hurt back. But I promise it’s coming! (updated 4-5-20)

I do a lot of similar masonry work and I found that if you take the eraser off of a regular pencil, then you can use the "eraser end" of a pencil to make the lines between the rocks when carving rock-type patterns into cement. It effectively gets the cement out while simultaneously smoothing out the cement. I also use a piece of 60 grit sandpaper to "stamp" the cement when doing a brick pattern. The sandpaper impression makes the brick carvings look more natural, if that's the look you're going for. Just wanted to share with everyone!!

Nice video. When I was in my younger 20's a older stucco guy taught me his brick trick. First apply the stucco layer in the natural grey color. Then we would add some dyed (red, orange, black, purple) mix thin layer over the top to it to look like brick (different shades for different types of brick) Then you can add some rake lines with a rake tool if desired too, to look like raked brick. Now take a level to get straight lines and use a tool we would make from a handle and wire rolled into a loop at one end to carve out the mortar joints, this makes cleaner lines than a round over joint tool. You need to cut in deep enough to get thru the dyed layer and into the grey layer so your joints look like real mortar. When almost dry use a whisk broom or paint brush to fine tune the rough edges if wanted. Most people would never even know it was stucco and not real brick when finished. Oh.. and I been doing it over 40 years 😊hehehe.

Michael thank you so much , I can't put a price tag on information like this . So many guys aren't willing to share knowledge and skills. You are truly a Craftsmen and our younger kids need to learn these skills or anything working with your hands , as a head hunter friend of mine told me these are the jobs that will pay the huge salaries very soon. I know 2 HVAC guys who both make over 150 thousand a year. LEARN A SKILL OR A TRADE YOUNG PEOPLE, IT PAYS WELL AND YOU FEEL GREAT ABOUT YOURSELF AT THE WND OF THE DAY BECAUSE NOT EVERYONE CAN DO THIS , BUT ALMOST ANYONE CAN PUNCH KEYS ON A COMPUTER AND THIA STUFF USUALLY PAYS BETTER.

I haven't (yet) tried any of the design techniques, but I've done plenty of parging. I learned a lot of this the hard way - but your tips are super-helpful. Hubs and I did some repairs to our front porch a few years ago when a piece of the corner broke off, exposing the bottom of the wood post. I was much better at parging than he was, so he let me do all of it, and just did the mixing for me. This was pretty badass. Thank you. I wish I would have watched this earlier. I had some broken brick stacked on a wall I had to fix. I thought about filling it and forming it out of mortar, but, having never messed used mortar, thought it was like cement and I had so make some fancy ass molds. So I cut a lot of 3/4" thick bricks out of paver flagstones, and mixed some mortar to stick them to the wall. It would have totally been easier to just use this and form my own. Doh.

"I do what I want"....now I can respect that. Seriously though, this was redonculously informative and fun to watch! Thanks. I'm wondering if this stuff will stick to artificial stucco?

I've been doing this type of work for over 50 years. Yeah, I'm that old. Never used a premix, though. I like it. You did a great video. I'm definitely going to try it out...on cooler days. I like the lack of extra lime required for bonding and copying what the old-timers of my early days called Keene's cement, which gave the mortar an ability to be polished. Very nice. Cool video. Thanks for sharing!

my friend took some tiny projector it had a usb connection, he took any image off the internet of a brick pattern, then projected it on to the wall, it was good enough to see the brick lines. i thought that was pretty smart

I'm thinking you could do this on a cement board... Take your time and controlled environment to do panels in your garage then transport it to the site and just fill in gaps. What you think?

@@JuanMejia-dm2io I normally use fiberglass mesh over joints then use a primer over the cement board. No wire needed. I use this method for thinstone installations.

@Armando Hectic yes. It's not the milk but a product you paint on for better adhesion. Weld-Crete or Conproco Primer. Superior bond for smooth surfaces.
