I certainly could have shot that at a lower ISO and dropped my shutter speed, even with the tight aperture used to create a sunstar. I often use auto ISO however so that I can respond quickly, without wasting time adjusting the settings, or in order to ensure stability handheld. I often set my minimum shutter speed to around 250th or 320th when doing this.

It's basically the same, the differences are tiny. The Z30's AF should be slightly better in low light and it has USB-C and an articulating screen, that's the TL;DR.

How do you guys get such sharp, crisp footage on faces? I feel like my X-T3 even with prime lenses is giving me soft face rendering. Are you doing sharpening in post, or is my XT-3 just less sharp than the Panasonic cameras you guys shoot with?

I'm sure one part of it is the wet-dreams-of-Stanley-Kubrick class lenses they might be using. "That being said"(copyright Chris Niccols)... For video in general, my experience has been that Sony and Panasonic have been the ones to lead the pack as far as sharpness goes. I'm not aware of other manufacturers who - even at the entry level - will do 4k video by downsampling from 6k or higher res... Everybody else just captures the 8mp subset of the pixels, so less sharp in video. Fuji effectively does ever so slightly higher than 4k capture res because the X-Trans layout risks hue bias, so they counteract that by capturing some more neighboring pixels to correct for it.

You could have included some FTZ adapter tests in the video ... that's about the only solid option for lenses at this time. The camera looks plenty capable for my use. Now I have to wait 2-3 years for the lens selection to catch up ....

Exciting! I like the video footage from the S1H too btw. This actually looks like a decent little camera at a reasonable price point. The image quality and colours look like what I get from my D7500 (which is a good thing). I'm not sure if you have a couple of the tech specs correct; on Nikon's website it states that the video has 'no crop-factor limitations' yet Jordan stated the 4K has a 1.5 crop factor, can you confirm this? Also Chris, you said the SD card slot is UHS-2 compliant but on Nikon's website it says UHS-1. I think it may appeal to people like me who are already Nikon hybrid photo/video shooters who have existing lenses that can be used via the adapter. It's good that they have incorporated the Hybrid AF system with face detection too. Downsides seem to be; No IBIS, 1 card slot, low battery life, no headphone port, and not being able to use the screen as a trackpad for AF when operaing via the EVF. Not a bad effort though for a first iteration.

@@Agora1981 If you're shooting Raw, there shouldn't be any issue with color. Your white balance defaults may not be optimal either. In Capture One, the colors are usually near spot on, and require little adjustment... I stick with the Provia profile and edit from there

I just bought the z50 as a b cam to my z6. Found an extremely misfortunate problem though: the continuous autofocus with face recognition doesn’t work in video when the screen is used in selfie mode. Haha how could Nikon fuck that up?

The lens situation can't be sugar coated, at least if you need more than some slow kit zooms. Just buy a Fuji X-T30 for less money, more resolution and pro lens options

I would get the adaptor & use the excellent AF-P 18-55mm VR. Got mine used for £39. It's very sharp, small & light. Even with the AFZ adaptor, still a great match for the Z50.

@@EinzMY Native Fuji lenses are fantastic but also expensive even 2nd hand in my country. I'm thinking, with the FTZ adapter I can just buy 2nd hand Nikon F-mount lenses. I still have my 50 G. But looking at the specs of the Z50 I'd still need to wait it out either way. Maybe there's a Z60 or Z70 on the way and by that time we have a mature family of Z lenses.

As it seems and some comments have already pointed out: There is no crop in 4k mode. Could you please correct this if this is a mistake by dpreview? However it would be pretty stupid by Nikon if they send out the preproduction camera with crop and did not communicate it properly.

It is very likely a similar architecture to the older d500 sensor, however it has a phase detect af array and thus is a new design with a new construction.

The small body looks nice, but the big bulky lenses look ludicrous on it, the M43 system is a better option if you need a small quality camera, like the upcoming Olympus E-M5 MKIII for an example.
