The Sony A7r4 changed my opinion about Sony completely. I use this camera 90% for wildlife and here it really shines. On the Sony 600mm 4.0 GM I get in APS-C Mode effectively 900mm at f/4.0 and this at 27MP. You program the function ring on the GM lens and switch then easily between Full Frame and APS-C Mode. Excellent for Wildlife, super flexible. And this equipped with an Autofocus which is not as on the A9 but close. Not to forget a buffer of 68 RAW files at 61 MP. Yes, with the Sony A7r4, Sony really delivered a great product. I am deeply impressed and move now from Canon to Sony. Cheers!

I've used mine heavily since I picked it up last month on travels (birds, night scenes, streets) and I love it, it absolutely handles and focuses well once you set it up and understand its ins and outs. However, potential buyers really need to take note that this is really not a casual use snap and go camera. Yes, storage is cheap, but 60MP adds up extremely fast. Upgrading to the A7R4 also means upgrading to higher capacity UHS1/2 SD cards, upgrading to a better computer if you don't already have one, and buying tons of hard disks. Two things I would really have liked to see were lower res options (30 and 40MP sound great) as well as the top left drive/AF mode dial as seen on the A9, which I find myself missing.

Tracking works really well for birds and dragonflies in flight and I am not missing my A9 in that regard. The AnimalEyeAF is remarkable. It locked on the the eyes of a fox at 45 metres and 48 metres, even though in the latter shot the fox was partially obscured by a bush. I currently use my A7R4 with a Sony 200 - 600mm and a Sony 90mm macro and have no complaints. I will also be using it with a 100 - 400mm G Master in the near future. The good news we have yet another choice when it comes to buying a camera that best suits our personal needs at the time. Those needs may be both real and imaginary. The bad news is we have less and less excuses for not consistently creating excellent results. So it does not come as any surprise that all we hear is excuses. But that is nothing new, it is our nature to blame anything and anyone but ourselves for our failings and shortcomings. This is why those waiting for a perfect camera have a long wait, since a perfect camera requires a perfect person to use it. You heard it before, the best camera you have is the one you have with you. This is why we should not be surprised that legacy cameras are being replaced by advanced smartphones. That the technical knowledge requirement to create the image in camera is fading away thanks to post capture apps that enable quick turn around of images, that are lost even quicker on the Net. This is why I still enjoy going old school and slowing down a bit by using my analog Fujifilm GSW690 from time to time and having imperfect prints made to share with future generations.

Great review as always... lumix s1 user here, what would be perfect is the af of the a7r4 in the s1/r body... that would be awesome

I hope everyone has someone in their life that looks at them the same way Chris looks At Rene in the video's thumbnail.

The out side shot of the camera on the tripod at the industrial site looks odd. The tripod looks like its moving on the kerb !!

After getting my hands on this in store, I have to agree, I really love the buttons other than the weird nuances that you mentioned. All of my comments about the buttons from the A7III being too mushy and hoping for the buttons to feel like the 'Record' button, have been addressed. All the buttons feel really nice and tactile. I just don't understand the two different locking mechanisms on those dials and that threw me off at first. Otherwise, I think this is more of the good stuff and even better feel. Even the battery door and side I/O panels feel really great.

A little late to the party...but to answer your question, the non-lockable button on the mode dial presupposes that no one wishes to risk accidently changing the mode while shooting a professional event. The clickable lock button on the compensation dial is to allow those who use compensation regularly to do so without having to press a button, while permitting those that don't to lockout the dial altogether (e.g. manual shooters who like to control shutter speed, aperture, and ISO). Personally, I could do without both of these locable buttons. In fact, I think the compensation dial should not as hard to turn as it is, while I wouldn't mind a harder mode dial if it meant getting rid of the dreaded lock button.

Sony a7r iii in Grey market cost 1800 euros... So no, a7r III is the best choice right now.

Thanks for the review. Boosting in low light poor Jordan looked like a plastic doll. That was not good. The 6400 iso he looked much more natural. I think an updated sensor/processor and body in the A7III will be fantastic.
