I recently got a great deal on a used Leica Q, and LOVE it. Dream camera and everything I hoped it would be. Anyone who is lusting after a Q2 but deterred by the price should consider a used Q1 for over 1/2 the price. Still pricey, as it is a Leica, but gets a Q in your hands and has ~90% (if not more) the capability of the Q2. Most people don’t need 47mp, and will be perfectly happy with 24mp ☺️🤙🏽📷🔴

Second hand Panasonic GX80 (£200 or so) plus a good prime lens - there's a whole bunch of choices for under £400. Good stabilisation, quiet electromagnetic mechanical shutter, tilting rear screen with touch focus, RAW files are surprisingly good even in poor light. M4/3 also gives deeper depth of field per f-stop than APS-C or full frame, so if you're depth focussing, you can do it at lower f-stops than other formats and significantly close the gap on the image quality difference that bigger sensors provide.

True. Such an inexpensive camera but has it all for the streets. Pair it with a tiny 12-32mm, a 20mm f/1.7 and/or a 15mm f/1.7 and you're set for not a lot of money. I recently got one for the second time, realized how much I missed it, even if I also have Fuji and Olympus cameras that I love, there's something special about the GX80.

Bought the GX80 plus 14mm 2.5 earlier this year and fell in love with it. Small setup, well made, solid feeling camera which is very fast in use. I put a small handgrip on it and carry it everywhere (the proviso for any ‘street’ camera, right?!) It’s a very inexpensive mini ‘Q’, budget plaything that delivers delightful results👍🤗

@@marcorenato1814 Sure, I've my GX80 today with the Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 and 15mm f/1.7, it's great and so small and light, you become a ninja in the streets. The GX9 20mp sensor is a bit better even, and with better color. Will it be as clean as full-frame? Of course not, but still very good and nowadays noise reduction software with machine-learning gives the files an extra boost. The GX80 also has excellent IBIS for more static shots.
@disraelidemon2 жыл бұрын
@@marcorenato1814 I use mine after dark with f1.7 and 1.8 and I'm happy with the results. You'll maybe get a bit more grain with mft than APS-C, but I'm very happy with the results I get. Bear in mind also that a lot of the Sony & Fuji camera bodies/f1.8 primes aren't stabilised, so the IBIS in the GX80 can let you pull down your ISO and offset some of the difference.

Have had the A7c since April 2021, purchased as a follow-up to my old NEX-5N. Though fewer customizable buttons, it continues most of the advantages of size that mirrorless ILCs that the APS-C cameras did, as long as lens choices are as diminutive as the body. Even so, the kit lens is better than the kit lens for the NEX. The Sony 85mm 1.8 works for an alternate compact prime, as well as the low-cost Sony 1.8 50mm. Works, yields quality images, and all without breaking the bank.

The old NEX-5N I started mirrorless ILCs with had a flip-up screen though no viewfinder, so the screen was sole device for composing a shot. Yes it flipped up, and would let you hold it above your head and aim down--but it wouldn't allow a view from the front of the camera, nor did it provide a way to view the screen while aiming the lens in a completely different direction. The A7C does. You CAN flip it up, but only after you unfold it to your left, and THEN flip it up. Slightly more work, but same result as flip-up.

Good info Chris and lots of good suggestions from commenters. Overwhelming really. I'm looking to get into some street photography during travels but also need something with versatility for other travel related objectives i.e. architecture, landmarks, vistas, low light. The biggest take away I got for street photo was the need for an unobtrusive setup to be as invisible/unobtrusive as possible. From many of the comments, it appears that it's an either/or decision: Point and shoot style vs ILC; full frame vs APS-C vs M43. I get that the larger the sensor, the better the quality but I don't want the bulk and weight that goes along with full frame and even APS-C systems. It appears that the M43 format might be the best option to achieve my objectives. Any insights will be appreciated.

A6400 for me with Sigma 18-50, 56 and Sony 20mm pancake. And I have had Fuji XE/X Pro/XT, Panasonic GX/GM/G, Sony RX100 and Ricoh GR. The Sony A6400 has a nice grip, good left EVF and fast AF.

Your last comment hit home with me. I have every camera type under the sun, from medium format down, but my favourite of all of them is my Leica Q2 Monochrom for street and much more. I have already been thinking of selling off my two GFX bodies (50s & 100s) and suite of GF lenses and buying a colour Q2 to go with the mono. Why not just use a colour Q2 and derive black and whites from it? Not the same. The Q2M is special.

Great review, Thanks. Brand new Black Fuji XT5 and a Fuji WR prime lens f1.4, for night & day Street photography. Less than USD3000. Either the 16mm (24eq) or the new 18mm (27eq) or the new 23mm (35eq) or the new 33mm (50eq), all f1.4 and WR, depending on your style/preferences. For your 3rd category (dream: USD12k), I would choose the new Hasselblad X2D 100C and the XCD 2.5/38 V (30eq)… pure photography.

Thanks for another great video. You mentioned at 4:52 that you take a hit with a Electronic shutter vs Mechanical shutter. Can you elaborate on this please?
@niccollsvideo2 жыл бұрын
Generally speaking, there is a hit to how much you can push and pull exposure when you've used electronic shutter. Often more noise will be apparent when pushing files. It's not the end of the world but it is noticeable if and when you need to push.

Excellent thought provoking video! My dilemma is that I am a dyed in the wool Canon Wildlife shooter with bonkers investment in this! I am looking for a good travel camera and perhaps a switch in direction to this plus street. So I am perplexed as to why Fujifilm are so slow in producing new gear like the X100v - I was offered a new one, but held my breath for its replacement - but no sign of this . Meanwhile I struggle to justify the Leica Q3. Is it REALLY worth it!? Have a loan camera in a few weeks time to see if they can convince me to sell body parts to buy!!

With each new video you put out, I''m downright shocked you haven't made a video about the Tamron 20-40mm f2.8 yet. With active stabilization enabled, it's a focal range that is remarkably similar to an iPhone at 1× and 2× zoom. It's also cheap and very lightweight, so it should prove to be extremely popular with photographers switching from their phones. Can you please give this lens the attention it deserves?

@lorenschwiderski2 жыл бұрын
The GX-9 has a good sensor -- maybe a bit of noise at times, but overall nice. I see no need for image stabilization on the street, as the shutter speed is cranked between 1/320s and 1/500s in most cases to prevent motion blur. Sadly, the GX series may have reached its end. 😐. Now a top of the line sensor, as you mentioned -- wow, a great dream, no doubt!

What about digital body options for M glass? Always been a Leica film shooter, but since 2020, with film being so expensive, and second kid on the way, I picked up the X100V. Been a joy with it though, and am shocked how hyped this camera have been. But I'm still interested to use my M glass (28/50) but don't have the budget for a M body. Felt the M9P would be nice but all the hoops to go through with those body I don't know, and Sony? Would they work right out the box with M glass? Much appreciated!

Elite and modern autofocus is nice, but largely unnecessary for most street shooters. Shoot f5.6/8, zone focus and go. None of these new mirrorless ILC cameras will match the portability and stealth of the Ricoh GR. Unrivaled IMO.

An Olympus Pen Mini with a 28mm or 40mm equivalent pancake lens gets close. A lot of the top comments on Robin Wong's video on his budget GRIII alternative (kzbin.info/www/bejne/oYrNqZWGjrCLd6M ) focus on comparisons between them and the GRIII/x, with faster autofocus being cited rather often. Not the same as zone focusing, which I personally prefer, but the form factor similarity is there.

Do travel cameras next. That requires versatility, portability, hybrid usage, battery life, the works. Then, cameras for landscape. Image quality is the prime requirement, relative to megapixel count. Also, consider their dynamic range. Video, not really except doing hyperlapses.

I used my EOS R6 shooting on the street for a while. It's not bad: great handle feeling, super-fast autofocus and some decent lens for street photography(RF 35mm f1.8, RF 50mm f1.8, RF 50mm f1.2). But its shape is not that stylish, especially compared with Fujifilm and Leica. I've thought about changing my EOS R6 to Ricoh GR or Fujifilm X-S10 but finally gave up on this idea. It's a Canon: reliable and does everything great(but not that perfect), just like a trustworth friend. I love this feeling. And hope everyone finds their best camera for photography, maybe it's the one near your hand.

I owned R6, Sony a6500, A7 iv, Fujifilm X-T4. From my experience for Street photography I find R6 bulky and heavy. Other then that everything is perfect and I love it. To he honest any of the modern mirrorlees models from any big brand will do a good job. They're compact enough and with a compact prime lens it'll be small and light enough. Personally my Fuji XT4 does a great job for street, and I can choose from a 23 or 33 mm depending how I feel. Not as compact as the fixed lens models that were mentioned, but hey, we used to carry around huge DSLRs, so I can't complain
