Fuji had a number of interesting and under appreciated pocket cameras. Buried in a box somewhere I have two of their ruggedized XP series that did well for me for a few years. The last of which was the XP140. For a small sensor cam, it had 16mp and a BSI sensor (though not XTrans). Currently, my pocket cameras are Sony RX100 VII and ZV1, but my APSC are Fuji. Compacts don't get much love, especially with phone advances. Also, everyone has been told they need big sensors to do even mundane camera jobs. There's a level of good enough that isn't sexy.

I have used the XQ2 since 2014 and always has it with me, I even took it to the summit of Cho Oyu the Worlds 6th highest mountain and got some amazing images. As you say it never gets in the way. My similar camera is Sony RX100 (version 1) which still works great and is super portable. Of course, main reason fuji and others aren't making pocketable point-and-shoots is because the smartphone camera market has taken that over (in the consumer space, which these were designed for). Even in the enthusiast space, smartphone cameras are dominant. I still love the feel and control of a dedicated camera as a photo-making tool, though.

I noticed after spending 3 years learning about photography and purchasing a huge full frame. I'm more likely to take something small like this when going out to shoot for fun. You get to the point in your photography journey where you can actually take great photos with any camera, im mind blown with i can do with an old canon SX400 bridge camera, applying the knowledge i've learned from using my full frame. Another thing is that if you're taking random street photos, people are much more comfortable if they know you're taking a quick snap with them in frame with a small camera, rather than a huge intimidating professorial camera.

Thought provoking video. I have a Lumix TZ100 as everyday camera similar to your Fuji, I love it. With phone cameras being "good enough" for most people's snapshot needs the market for a simple point and shoot compact is now very limited. Sony's RX100 or Ricoh GR tends to get the mindshare of photography enthusiasts looking for a compact camera which leaves a small market for the rest. This limits the appetite for R&D for new models. With 10x optical getting better and better in a smartphone paired with computational enhancement I can only see the compact market contracting even more. The upside is there are loads of bargain used compact cameras to choose from 😄Like vinyl I think dedicated cameras will make a limited comeback. Fuji today makes a large chunk of its profits out of Instax which is a rehash of the polaroid camera for the instagram generation.

Take a look at the Fuji F20 and F650 cameras. You can still get them cheap and you may find them fun to use with good quality results, which was my experience with them. BTW, there are microSD to xD memory card adapters available for these older Fuji F series compact cameras.

Alternative is Panasonic DMC-LF1, very similar, very small. The catch is that the zoom lens easily picks up grit and sticks. Eventually that grit can wind up on the sensor. LX100 does the same, as do many P&S cameras with zooms. Anyway, it worked great for me for years, until the sensor crud got too bad to tolerate.

Hey the black-and-white photos are really nice. But all you KZbinrs and the price of doing film photography is jacking up the prices like crazy on these cameras. A couple hundred? I looked they were all like 400 to 800. Maybe 200 was the price six or eight months ago, but not now.

Not to be the idiot here - but isn’t the smartphone “good enough” for having great point and shoot in a matter of seconds while not getting distracted from what you’re attending? That’s for me the best pocket camera.

Sure. Idc what people use. I don’t like to use my smartphone. Not because the image quality but because it’s my phone. I never said to NOT use a smartphone and if you look in my description… I show you the gear I use when I DO use my smartphone. But these cameras are smaller than most phones and I just struggle with a phone man. I feel like I’m not quick and I feel clunky.

imo although my phone is the quickest camera i have and it’s on me at all times, i don’t really like how in order to actually get manual or even semi-manual things like aperture or shutter priority you have to purchase an app or stay with a limited freemium version that barely offers anything over the default photo app on my phone. it’s basically paying for a product you already own. however the phone can still take great photos when used well

The older we get, the more prone we are to going back to the simple. In the '90s, we lived in the moment at clubs and concerts. We had these little digital point-and-shoots then, but hardly anyone (but parents) used them. Phones were small, then got huge, and now we have small options again for those who crave simple. I'm 45 now, and I like a bit of both.

I got a 2011 release Nikon P300 for a steal deal of $16 USD used, complete with battery and an 8 Gb card ready to use from a local thrift shop here in the Philippines. I think the Nikon P300 is the closest camera contender to your Fuji XQ2 when it comes to basic specs because it is the same size, also has a 2/3 12 megapixel sensor, also shoots 1080p full HD video ahead of its time (720p is the norm for most compacts in 2011), and almost the same focal range with 1.8 aperture at widest focal length. I still use my Nikon P300 today when I need a compact camera in my travels because I think it is better in low light than midrange phones It got 5x optical zoom (24mm - 100mm equivalent), an f1.8 widest aperture, and most of all it has mechanical full manual exposure settings of aperture of ISO, aperture and shutter speed which is very easy to adjust whenever I need them (I am not a fan of software based manual settings that comes from the camera apps of smart phones). I think there are good compact point-and-shoot digital cameras from Nikon, Canon, Sony, Fuji, Olympus, Kodak, Panasonic and even Samsung and Minolta that were either underrated or long forgotten. For me, powerful compact cameras comes in 2 forms - 30x optical zoom lenses that's better than the zooms of any smart phones, and professional user interface where you can adjust ISO, aperture and shutter speeds thru separate buttons and wheel clicks. That makes versatility in a small size. Image quality and performance-wise small points and shoots are all the same outdoors, setback by the limits in low light and high ISO performance, and long telephoto range slowness.

Actually, I've just returned to using film cameras. I budget how much I spend by being not quite so profligate on how many exposures I do. I like the filmic look, and most importantly having a proper viewfinder ( Olympus XA2 in my case, and also Minox 35 ). Once you've used a decent viewfinder, who on earth would want to revert to digital cameras with just an LCD.

Inspiring :) My XA has been shelved for a while now too for the same reason. Wife has been soldiering on with film, trying to bankrupt us so I got her a scanner to try and rein in the costs. Hadn't heard of that Fuji. Been having a lot of fun with a Lumix GM5 and small primes, or a speedbooster and manual lenses, shooting in l.monochrome and not caring about high ISO. Thinking of trying a fixed lens thing to get even more casual.

Hello. Congratulations on your wedding. My first digital camera was a fujifilm. It was a point, and shoot 3 megapixel. Those pictures came out very beautiful. Later I figured that any camera I bought afterwards took great photographs. Later I figured it was me. It's my style of shooting, and the cameras had nothing to do with it. So I threw everything away, and just kept 3. I use my phone, and ocasionally my canon eos. I have a uniden I bought 17 years ago 5 megapixels. It's a point, and shoot. The photos come out beautiful as well. The zoom lens is pretty good. I like basic cameras. I don't need that much. I do what I can with cameras, but they do what they are suppose to do. Another thing circulating back in the days was the hatred of those point, and shoot cameras. I like everything to be set to where I don't have to focus at all. I focus on the subject, and that's all. They tried to say that if you didn't use a manual setting your photos weren't going to come out good. I never cared about that. I like my cameras. I use what I have. Compact, and ready to go.😊 I like your video.
