I've briefly used an a7iv and I can confirm for pro photographers I highly recommend that camera for it is faster in so many ways. For the occasional pro user the iii is still a great choice and very affordable on the used market! To sum up I agree with Chris and Jordan

"If you're doing some landscapes, casual portraits, and maybe some wedding work..." Yep that basically describes me right now. I have an a7iii and I shoot about 1-2 weddings a year and do a few portrait sessions too. I have no need to upgrade right now. All I'm really missing is the real time tracking AF. Totally content to wait until the a7V update in a few years time.

Have a look at your wedding work, especially the receptions where you're photographing in the dark at high ISOs and tally up all the out of focus shots. The a7IV would nail focus every time (my a7RIV even does that) with tracking and eye AF. To me, it's well worth the money to have every photo with tack sharp focus.

Of course what Chris and Jordan say is spot on. Since I have a few minutes I'll throw in my half penny or two since Chris did suggest the a7r lineup toward the end...I chose a lightly used a7r (first edition) as my very first full-framer a couple months ago for $950. I looked at the $2000 a7iii and of course the more expensive and in-demand brand-new a7iv. The iii and iv of course seemed great, but for more than $1k less I got a great camera that covered my needs. I got a 36mp sensor, weather sealing, durable shell and relatively compact (I have big hands, so the grip is barely even big enough for me). Yes I do have to put up with the click-clack of the a7r's clunky shutter. I believe later a7r models get rid of that issue. Either way when I switch over to my a6000, I hear that single shutter sound and think, "ahhh, just hearing that in my next full-frame will mean I upgraded sufficiently." Lastly, since I'm almost exclusively a landscape photographer, I don't at all care about the special focusing features and those sorts of things. In other words, don't forget about good used gear from a reliable source, or even older but unused models. That's all I can say right now. Great review as always, guys. Stay warm up there, aye?!

for stills shooting, a7iii is enough. amount of it was so high, many good second hand deals now, 1000~1100USD in my region for a clean, nice looking second hand camera. if you want high mp with decent autofocus and 10fps shooting, a7r3 is also still great. sports, a9 is quite affordable and had animal eye AF + tracking available. Honestly, the only reason to upgrade to the A7 IV is if you feel the the shutter on your A7 III is on the verge. Otherwise the improvements are marginal and you will more than likely not feel or see much difference. Image wise, as other reviewers have stated they are pretty much identical.

Fair assessment. I agree, image quality is very similar. $800 price bump for better AF and usability makes more financial sense for people who use this as their daily camera to earn a living. If you're only a light commercial or consumer user then it will come down to if you have deeper pockets and money isn't an issue, then by all means get the newer camera.

This is pretty much always the answer, it is not worthwile to jump from one generation to the next. It was true before, it is still true now. And it's even more true on the Sony platform where the release schedule is so fast, even if it has slowed a bit. It's better just to wait 2 generations then jump, or switch lineup (like going from a7 to a7r or a1).
@JonInLondon

Another option is keep the A7III and spend the $1500 or so it'll cost to upgrade (with a trade-in) on a lens that solves a photographic issue... Also the A7rIV is discounted down to about $500 above the A7IV at the moment. Oh and for sports types a used A9/A9II might be worth considering...

I am hobby photographer so take the following for what it is worth. I do not have to earn my living from photography. I am over 60 and up until 2004 I shot with film. My camera was stolen and I invested in the new digital format. My first camera was a sony, 4mp almost point and shoot. My kids were young and the photos I got are priceless. I digress. I stayed with sony because they were always pushing the boundaries and I hated the big form and weight of a Dslr. However the fun of taking a photo was missing so 3 years ago I invested in the Fujifilm system. I have a sony A73 but I always took the Fujifilm XT3 or 100V (my desert island camera) for a day out. I tried the A7IV last month, ordered and received yesterday. The A73 is still a great camera but the A7IV with the improved handling has given back to me the pleasure of taking a photo. This is the first Sony camera I actually really enjoy the process of taking a photo and and I have have had many. Instead of thinking I am going somewhere nice, need to take a camera, now I have a camera, where can I go! Of all my subscriptions you two come first.

I had A7RII and while I was planning to buy upcoming A7IV then suddenly i changed my mind and bought EOS R6. After one year I don't regret actually. My biggest complain to Sony is the aspect ratio option for the viewfinder. Cmooon Sony it is just one line of code. We need to adjust it. This is the biggest pros for electronic viewfinder. Anyway, R6 and R5 have this feature and I am totally satisfied. I think on the paper there is nothing better than R6. Maybe extra 10mp but nnneeeehhh, 20 is plenty enough.

Nice comparison. I’m definitely a candidate. I still use my old a7ii so it will be a worthwhile upgrade to skip the iii and go for the iv. I shoot architectural photography at least 4 days a week, 8 to 10 hours a day so any little improvement is a big deal. As capable as the a7iii is, the extra programmable control wheel will eliminate the need to use that fiddly little back wheel, the extra digital stabilizing, better autofocus with more options, touch screen with option to shut it out, higher megapixels and curtain cover for lens changes is more than enough to make me jump to the iv. It’s no contest. 😉

For me the shutter down function alone is worth it. Sensor dust spots are as annoying as roaches. No matter how hard you try to fix your unit, seal all the open ends, clean your trashcan as often as possible, as long as the building is infected they'll creep in. I even commented on previous DPreview's video where they had a very obvious dust spot during focus breathing test. So it is not about technique. As long as you let open that mount and remove all barriers before the sensor dust will get on it. Some people may be skeptical about using shutter to fence off stuff. But I say, it is only a step towards the right direction. You can always borrow the idea from Z9, and have a special mechanism in front of shutter to automatically come out as long as the mount is detecting a lens twist/off contact. I don't think that is a difficult problem to solve to humanity but instead a rather easy implementation. And honestly speaking I've had my EOS R5 for this long and I never really need to "poke" my shutter while swaping lens in a hurry. Nor do I shoot in condition where hard particles can end up inside the camera.

I don't see it that way. If you use the cam as a professional and do customer orders with it: yes, then maybe. But as an amateur who shoots a few videos on vacation, 8-bit is perfectly adequate. 99% of the people who watch videos from the A7III won't notice anything negative about the color anyway. The whole 10-bit discussion is pretty overhyped imo. 1500 dollar price difference is not worth it for an amateur.

What or which or neither or both camera PRODUCES THE SHARPEST CLEANEST IMAGES?? This is the primary feature of a camera........this has ALWAYS been the most important feature of all cameras since time beginning. And when appraising image quality, one should compared apples to apples, meaning one should use the same, comparable leans on both cameras testing.

So many professionals shoot wedding video on 8-bit cameras, and it's fine. I doubt clients would be able to tell the difference. The extra dynamic range that SLog3 provides could come in handy sometimes, but I don't think it's going to make or break a wedding video. I guess if you are using the a7S III, then that could be good for matching. I would only consider 10-bit truly necessary for real cinematic work.
@TamarackFilmCo
@TamarackFilmCo 3 жыл бұрын
@@danieldougan269 We currently use the A7C as our third camera, and when you compare the 8-bit from it, to the 10-bit SLOG3 from the A7SIII there is a huge difference in color grading. I'm hoping you aren't confusing wedding videos of 7 years ago, with wedding films today. What does "REAL cinematic work" imply? I will happily take and work with SLOG3 footage over 8-bit. It's not much more work in post, and the resulting image, especially at 4k is much more refined. In my mind the client may not be able to tell a difference, but they might be able to sense it; much like over-cranking vs the 180* rule. Plus, at least on the A7SIII, the 10-bit SLOG3 allows us to use the clean 12800 ISO. That IS 100% worth it in all the crazy low-light situations we find ourselves in on a regular basis. We DO light receptions and as much other scenes on the day as we can, but weddings are incredibly fast-paced, and the ability to crank my ISO in SLOG3, especially with the flexibility of 10-bit makes an absolute WORLD of difference. If you don't believe me, you are welcome to watch our wedding films from this year, versus those from last year. I'm willing to bet you can see a difference.

I've been on the "budget is important" end of the purchasing decision ever since getting into photography as a hobby. If I was brand new to photography, I'd likely go for the least expensive thing that would meet my needs. Is that what I would recommend? No. For all things technology, I suggest spending the most one can afford to purchase the newest technology one can get then promptly, with care, use the daylights out of the gear. If you end up using said gear a lot, you'll be grateful to have good gear if you opt to upgrade years down the line. You would have also squeezed your money's worth out of it if you do use it a lot. I realize this philosophy won't work for everyone, but it might help some with their decision.

Great informative / succinct video as always guys. One comment - I personally was able to shoot *400-500* compressed RAW at 10 fps in my testing without any buffering (when shooting only to the CF-A card). I've no doubt the actual slow down point is much higher than this too (as is advertised by Sony) I just gave up around 500 out of boredom 😅. I'm not sure exactly what methodology you guys were using (maybe you were bottle-necked by shooting redundant RAW to the second slower slot?), but just thought I'd clear that up for anyone searching the comments ❤

Andrew is Sony Fanboys. Sony a7iv win over Canon eos r6 for megapixels. Sony a7iv loss with Canon eos r6 in so many like 20fps in Electronic shutter, 12fps in mechanical shutter. 4k60p only 1.01 crop. Lcd display Resolution. Body durability. Color science. Less mechanical shutter sound, low light performance. Shame on Sony

@Ail'enduril The new CF-A cards are brilliant to use on the a7S III, a1 and now a7 IV - shooting on all 3 of those cameras it's like there *_practically_* isn't a buffer at all. Obviously the card cards are still expensive, but the card slots being reverse compatible means you can use your current cards until prices come down / third parties (SanDisk, Lexar etc) start making the CF-A cards!

In my opinion, the upgrade is only worth it if you are a professional. And then only if you need the video features. If you only use the A7III for stills, the upgrade is definitely not worth it. The A7III's auto-focus is still ahead of most of the other cameras in its price range. I've never had a camera before where I pressed the shutter and knew exactly: the focus will fit 99% of the time. I simply don't need more. Also, I find the whole 10bit discussion to be overhyped. Here on KZbin, thousands of videos have been uploaded that were made with the A7III, and I bet hardly anyone has ever complained about the colors.

Nice compare but (there has to be i guess). There are also many things that might make someone happy from the much improved ftp en networking options. The wifi and usb-c upgrade (including faster charging), new menu system, full hdmi, 4 channel audio input etc etc. I would personally take your list and then add $10 for each small feature you like and soon you will find it makes sense to upgrade if you can get your hands on one and sell the A7III when it still has value. two important ones would be a new shutter design (since the A7III is the worst shutter sony has made the last decade) and future updates the A7IV has the new dual XR chipset and runs the same platform as the S3 and A1 so we can expect more upgrades and the A7III to get very few new updates from now on. If you enjoyed your A7III for the last few years it makes even more sense to upgrade to extend that feeling by knowing you have the followup that will make you ready for 3 more years at least. I might get one myself as a backup to my A1 since many of the features now overlap.

The a7 IV is definitely a nice upgrade, but the price just makes it unappealing to me. It costs 2800€ in most of Europe right now and that's over a thousand € more than the a7 III which can often be found for around 1600€ on sale. And in the end, the upgrades are not enough to justify such a price bump. This especially comes apparent when you compare it to the a7 III a the time of its launch. The a7 III raised the bar for entry-level full-frame cameras and was a huge step up over the a7 II and at the time far ahead of Sony's rivals. The a7 IV does not do that, it is just updated to current specs and not even that in some aspects. 4k 60 with a crop feels like a real letdown and a burst rate of 10 fps is behind Canons R6, which is also cheaper. Overall while it is a nice upgrade, it is still a letdown for me as I expected a much bigger jump after we waited so long for this camera. I will most likely skip this generation of a7 unless it becomes a lot cheaper.

4:15 "33MP over 24 is a substantial increase". No it's not: sqrt(33/24) = 1.17 or 17% increase in linear resolution. Not really much at all from a theoretical standpoint (Nyquist Theorem). But if you don't trust theory, look again at 4:22 or better still, go to one of dpreview's test scenes and you'll only see marginal improvement between 42 and 24mp.

I don't agree the handling being an worthwhile upgrade at all. It's a comfortable body. There's nothing wrong with Sony's old menu when you got used to it. I agree the IQ is a worthwhile upgrade, but only because something you didn't mention - the A7IV has practically eliminated hot pixels in long exposures. Resolution and arguably better highISO aren't a big selling point. Although the AF is better, is it really that big of a difference??? I think the A7III tracks wonderfully and it's the only reason I bought the A7III. Getting marginally better AF really doesn't justify an upgrade. If it's your first A7 body? This is a stupid question, because it SOLELY depends on type of photography and the budget. We all know newer is better. You can get a used A7III for ~1300$. A new A7IV costs you ~2600$.

@@billy00001 It's definitely a matter of personal preference. I shot Pentax before Sony and am used to small bodies, especially the pinky being under the body - this way I have a finger on all 4 sides of the grip. Feels natural and extremely secure to me, unnatural to others. 6 months is rather long :P I'm sure you meant you never really bothered looking into what it meant until one day after 6 months you decided to look it up. I personally used the manual for some stuff too, especially how to customize buttons and set up eye-AF. But I also used my manual on Pentax when I first started learning and even later on. So... using a manual is rather normal, no? I have used Canon and Nikon on a few occasions and I can't say their menus were anyway better. They are all different. We just have to accept the simple fact: different manufacturer -> different menus. At this very moment I think it's fair enough. You have people with all kinds of budgets. But you won't find an cheap used A7IV unlike the A7III. ... pretty pointless discussion really :D at the end of the day, I'm not upgrading and when I do I'll have my own opinion that will differ from what DPReview says, as it should be. No one should base their buying decision on a single video or suggestion :)

I got an A7S III as my upgrade from APS-C to full frame, but I'm finding 1) I'm not really shooting much video, 2) I feel somewhat hampered by the low still resolution, and 3) (kinda the same issue as 2) because the resolution is so low, I can't effectively re-use any of my APS-C glass. Considering selling it and getting an A7 IV. I'd miss the occasional 4k 120 clip, those always look epic, but like I said that's only an occasional thing for me. What I'm really wondering is if I'd be taking a step back in low light performance. I know they're not really comparable, but I'd greatly appreciate a comparison video between the A7S III and the A7 IV!

For absolute low light, you can't beat the A7s3. But the A74 is surprisingly great for low light. In fact on some ISO comparisons, the A74 had LESS noise than the A7s3. But when pushed to the maxes ( >12800) the A7s3 still beat out the A74 no doubt. So if you are looking at extreme low light conditions and is part of your routine work, I'd stick with the A7s3. But if your workflow deals mostly with occasional low lights, than the A74 would be the way to go. At the end, I think the added versatility of the higher pixel count in beefing up the photo capability of the A74 and the remarkably improve low light performance of the A74 is a great choice. The only that currently concerns me is the occasional overheating issue that I've been hearing about people say about the A74.

I have even seen the a7 III available used as a kit with the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 for around US$2500, which is what the a7 IV costs new body-only. So, the a7 III is a great value on the used market.

But I'm not.. not doing that. Now that the A7III is more affordable, i can grab another one for like $1k used and have another angle to use in wedding shoots or get good glass like the 50mm 1.2 GM.
