"The Importance of Black Superintendents: Navigating Student Achievement Through a Pandemic," with Dr. Clark, Superintendent of Mt. Diablo Unified School District in California. The purpose of this talk is to explore the ways in which African American/Black Superintendents play a vital role in navigating and addressing the unique student and community needs, practical concerns, and political landscape that has emerged and been magnified during the pandemic. Many districts are attempting to traverse the setbacks caused by varying climate perils, and the recent CRT controversy, while also ensuring the academic needs of their increasingly diverse student populations are met. In this challenging environment, African American/Black Superintendents are uniquely equipped to bridge systemic gaps and mend societal barriers. Unfortunately, Black or African Americans constitute only 11% of all superintendents, and their expertise is a grossly underused. Although scrutinized the most, they manage to thrive, and support student achievement, while often leading complex school districts that present a range of leadership challenges.
