I L-O-V-E the direct, truthful and purposeful discussion here; especially the conviction of Ms. Christine’s heartfelt desire to truly understand the powerful statement made by Ms. Anita. I now understand this is much like the hypocrite’s prayer verses the sinner’s prayer. To love people is to see the brokenness in this fallen world and give them Jesus and his saving grace. If I choose to focus on loving the person, I get to be the person who shares the good news or if I focus on hate I will inevitably block the flow of the life transforming news due to my prejudice or feelings of superiority. It’s uncomfortable to confront sin gently to our fellow believers but it’s necessary, biblical, and the most loving thing we can do. In a culture where truth is so hidden and twisted we need more boldness spoken in love. I understand your point about disgust and this should be self examined. I understand coming from the counseling office from an ethics standpoint, but that doe not equal how we disciple in the church. I know that the sinner (many of them) only feel judgement from those words, not love. If they don't feel love or compassion it will initially be difficult for them to receive ministry. However, Dr. Phillips made a key observation, the person that makes that comment must be mature in the love of God and approaching all situations with the heart of God. Thank you ladies.

I was on board with most of what was said here, however, the train derailed when Phillips set up this false expectation @2:37, that they should walk away from us saying “I felt only love!” If we are boldly proclaiming the gospel to the world, is this a biblical expectation? (See 2 Cor. 11). NO. That is not at all what I see all throughout the NT, including Jesus himself. We shouldn’t concern ourselves with pleasing man, that is, worrying about getting a positive response from people.

I completely agree and understand what you’re saying Dr. Phillips. I struggled with this just recently. Praying blessings on our “enemies”, I had to have truth and I had to understand the truth that the Holy Spirit brought to me. I had to learn how to love people even when those people might be hurting me or someone I love. That was hard, but I welcomed the knowledge. Disgust is fleshly. Loving and praying for those who hurt you or hurt people you love, helps break the hate cycle. The Holy Spirit will bring you truth about the situation and that bring understanding and that brings compassion. That is the pause we need to take. Lord, help us to understand that hurt people hurt. Help us to understand that you are the light of the world that shines through us and if we’re not compassionate, then we’re not truly being a conduit for you. I know I’m talking about hurt people, but I think these topics go hand-in-hand.

Paul said that the spiritual man judges all things. There is no contradiction. We are not to judge people. We are to judge things. We judge things as right and wrong all the time, every day, and we are supposed to. It's wrong to murder, wrong to steal, wrong to lie. Those are judgments and we are to hate the sin but love The Sinner

We should "love the person and hate the sin" and a part of love is expressing your concern for their sin state. Holy Scriptures says "Speak the truth in love" ( EPH 4:15) and for me this means talking with others about their sin state and showing them in Scripture what Elohim says about their sin. I agree we should not make the person feel like they are being attacked but they should walk away uplifted in love. They should feel like the person cared enough to "rescue them from a burning building."

He loves us so much, He sent us JESUS and extends us mercy, but STILL calls us to repentance. The Bible makes it clear that God hates sin, so should we. I do agree with what Dr. Anita said about the disgust feeling...the Lord has had to deal with me about that many times. We should pray that the Lord give us compassion for sinners, so we can express God’s love WITH love. Yes! However, that feeling of disgust we need the Lord to help us with has nothing to do with hating the sin. We are supposed to hate sin. That’s part of what helps us desire to turn AWAY. Sin should disgust us, but it’s learning to understand that we are fighting principalities and not people that will help. GOD bless! 🙏🏽♥️✝️

In an instant he loves ons them and set that on a path of redemption. Where does it leaves our feelings...do we then say but what he has done does not take away that he needs to eliminated as such... The facts remain that on the cross Jesus died a cruel death for exactly this person for all they have done Jesus had to die.....and knowing that that Jesus's blood had to flow for that person shows us the LOVE of God. At the pinicle of our core believes as believers, this is the key we ought to always remember is to love others....no ifs or buts ... Proverbs 8:13, or "But as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” 1 Peter 1:15-16. Where in the Bible does it say that love is without truth or without calling out truth? The most loving thing you can do is what Christ did, call them out of their sin and to truth of God's holiness. Obivously there is a way to do this in relationship and kindness and mercy as Christ did, but don't cheapen God's gift by saying "someday they may figure out 'oh that person was a christian.'"

As Christians, we owe to do better. Because we know and we've been exposed to The Best behaviour (Jesus). We honestly cannot blame non believers as they don't know. The phrase "love the sinner, hate the sin" is not explicitly found in the Bible, but the concept is rooted in biblical principles. As Christians, we are called to love others as ourselves (Matthew 22:39) and to forgive as we have been forgiven (Colossians 3:13). However, we are also called to recognize and confront sin (Matthew 18:15-17), while showing compassion and offering redemption (Galatians 6:1). Therefore, while we should not condone or celebrate sin, we should approach sinners with love and seek their restoration rather than condemnation.

You approach people from a place of humility and love no matter what they’ve done but it’s almost like she’s saying “loving a person”’ is ignoring sin. Statements like hers makes me wonder if she studies the Bible fully or if she just goes to scriptures about love. Love AND hate is in scripture. How could any believer have a problem with the term “hate the sin” which is what we are called to hate and repent of? Yikes.

Dr Anita was talking about attitude. You are trivializing and simplifying what she said in a way that goes Way beyond what you're saying. A lot of believers do not have the capacity to focus on loving the person and hating what they do. When it comes to souls you should focus on loving people and you can still stand on the truth without focusing on hating their sin. I can stand on the truth of God's word speaking to a drug dealer without making my focus hating selling drugs I don't have to focus on hating sin that's not required to minister to somebody. I can disagree with sin I can denounce sin I don't have to focus on hating sin.

She has a mixture of truth and flesh/lies which is not good. There is such a thing as righteous indignation and speaking out against sin. -But we must operate from God's spirit & love. Because God loves he also disciplines us. He is a good father and we can love all day long but sin itself ..like murdering the unborn..should repulse us. And she is blurring the lines although she *backtracked* well.

Love covers a multitude of sin. I understand that but does it mean you keep relationship and communication with someone who keeps hurting you and is indeferent about it? Is pausing a relationship for a bit to tend to your wellbeing unforgiveness or being unloving?

"You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies." John 8:44. When Jesus tells the Pharisees, that they are of the devil, judging them, based on their fruits, how is this an expression of love towards the person? Jesus had the ability to look at a person's heart, and although we can't see their heart, he told us, that we will know them by their fruits. We need to be wise as serpents, because the devil roams about in many forms, seeking to destroy the naïve, and gullible Christians..

We should hate the sin and love the person. Sin is evil. No one is perfect so we ALL fall short of God’s glory. If God hates sin, us being His children, we should also hate sin (God still loves us even though we fall short of His glory every day. God sent Jesus to die for our sins). I think the problem is those who say that they love people and their actions show different. Jesus sat with sinners, He didn’t sin. Never think highly of yourself than you ought to because there’s not one human being perfect on this earth. I’m a Christian and I could never be perfect, neither can any of us. When you say not to hate the sin it kind of makes it seem like we are conforming to the world. I love people even people that have different beliefs. Therefore I treat people kind because “for God so loved the WORLD that He gave His only begotten son.” People know we are Christian by how we love. I love homosexual people, will have a conversation with them, love them, be kind. Will go out to dinner. To a movie. Socialize together, but I’m not going to a gay parade because that would mean I’m not standing for what I believe in. I love alcoholics, but I’m not about to encourage you to get intoxicated, nor am I buying them beer. Separate the people from the sin. Love people even if you don’t agree with their lifestyle, but still stand true to your beliefs. God honors that.

Dr. Anita I disagree cause u can love the person but not the wrong they are doing and help them change in the love u have for them.

Do you love your children when they disobey you or they get involved the wrong crowds and fall into drugs or jail. Yes! Like the prodigal son. But it does not mean you love or approve or tolerate what they are doing. Sometimes love means sometimes you call someone out on something. Sometimes you cover an offense because of love (grace, mercy)...undeserved. Other times, "tough love" might let the toddler burn his hand to realize not to touch the stove.

This is the Grown-folk level. Most Christians are not ready for this level. They spend more time and energy focused on sin than they do on God.

The title of this is quite confusing and disturbing. We are to hate what God hates and God hates SIN. How in the world can a hatred for SIN be coming from the flesh??? In the flesh dwellweth no good thing, so I would think that my flesh wouldn't be disgusted by someone's sinful lifestyle. The Holy Spirit in me is disgusted, not my flesh. I would still not treat a sinner (or saint who falls in sin) any differently, but I cannot ignore the fact that they have sinned. We all have, and it must be dealt with. We don't judge the sinner as a person, we judge the SIN ONLY. So yes, we are to hate the sin and love the sinner. She said "Achieving "holy hate" is almost impossible??" Well of course it is... WITHOUT THE HOLY SPIRIT. Only by the spirit of God can we truly love what He loves and hate what He hates. It cannot be done thru human strength and willpower bc we'll fail everytime. Most certainly as Christians, true believers as I like to say, we are to be filled with the Holy Spirit to help us live and love like Christ. So yes, it IS possible to have a "holy hate" thru God's power. 💯

I've always said things would be much different if we learned to love not just the victims, but also the prepertraitor and show them that Christ loves them too. I remember being at work one day and I got an email asking for prayer for a two year old who was sexually assaulted, she was in the hospital. I felt so much anger, and said to God why didn't you just take him out when he was doing this to this child? Then this thought came to my mind "my grace is sufficient even for him" Christ's blood can cover his sins too. Only by the power of the Holy Spirit can we love this way.

I would like to say I understand where she is coming from....I wonder if the word "sad" instead of hate would feel more comfortable? Not to sound condescending however, I have people I love very much that do things I know are going to end up badly (although God could prove me wrong any day!), and I don't have the emotion strongly enough to call them "hateful" feelings but I do feel sad knowing it's going to hurt individuals that are involved, and that makes me sad. Thoughts???
