Dr. Anthony Fauci in conversation with Sean Penn at Live Talks Los Angeles discussing his memoir,
"On Call: A Doctor’s Journey in Public Service." This event was taped on June 24
The memoir by the doctor who became a beacon of hope for millions through the COVID pandemic, and whose six-decade career in high-level public service put him in the room with seven presidents.
Dr. Anthony Fauci served as Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health from 1984 to 2022. He also served as the Chief Medical Advisor to President Joe Biden. He is currently a Distinguished University Professor at Georgetown University with a joint appointment in the School of Medicine and the McCourt School of Public Policy. He has received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the National Medal of Science, and the Mary Woodard Lasker Award for Public Service and has been awarded 62 honorary doctoral degrees, and is the author, coauthor, or editor of more than 1,400 scientific publications.
Sean Penn is a two-time Academy Award-winning actor, filmmaker and author. In January 2010, Penn established J/P HRO in the immediate aftermath of the catastrophic Haiti earthquake. The emergency relief nonprofit was renamed CORE (Community Organized Relief Effort) and continues to bring immediate aid and recovery to underserved communities across the globe.
Anthony Fauci is arguably the most famous doctor in the world today. His role guiding America sanely and calmly through Covid earned him the trust of millions during one of the most terrifying periods in modern American history, but this is only part of his story. Over five decades in public health, he’s played a crucial role in researching HIV and bringing AIDS into sympathetic public view and provided leadership in navigating the Ebola, SARS, West Nile, and anthrax crises.
His memoir reaches back to his boyhood in Brooklyn, New York, and carries through decades of caring for critically ill patients, navigating the whirlpools of Washington politics, and behind-the-scenes advising and negotiating with seven presidents on key issues from global AIDS relief to infectious disease preparedness at home. On Call is an inspiration for readers who admire and are grateful to him and for those who want to emulate him in public service. He is the embodiment of “speaking truth to power,” with dignity and results.

So impressed with Penn’s interview skills. Of concern, he’s 63 and Fauci is 83. Penn’s a heavy smoker, I assume spends lots of time in the sun and he’s a worrier. Fauci doesn’t smoke, jogs but keeps sun exposure to a minimum and he is an optimist. I fear Penn will live a short life, but I’d bet Fauci lives well into his 90s.

I have respect for the good Dr. He is proof that we can work with all parties of the government if we are honest and fact driven. If we also respected the diffeences of opinion. No one way is perfect, Demacrate vocalize this. Republicans are now in belief that they should run us into a world that has no diffreces, that has no other beliefs. This is a way to deem all persons who are not like this party should be dealt with, they should either submit or they should be kicked out of this Country. Really we see in Hostory how these ways always turn into exsplosive and demolishing ways for us to become as the very Countries we have praised ourselves for being better than. The Country is made great for being inclusive, now we are veing told they no longer want this, so we all who are diffrent will be kicked out or put into consideration camps. For real the Project 2025 has a part that plans to put the people no longer concidered Americans, into such gated facilities that Trump plans to build on the boarder, remember the communist scare where they rounded up the asian communities, or the Americans accusation against neighbors, were enough to have families carted off to these terra le places. History tells us what come next, but Americans no longer look to educate our future gennerations this truth because dumbing us down as free and equal citizens makes it more easy to control, to lie too, to decie e

Because of a past life threatening allergy to ibuprofen, I chose not to be vaccinated. I have also never had a flu shot and I am 68 years old. I never went out without my mask, however, for about three years. When I finally did get the omicron and a doc told me I should take Paxlovid bc of my age and non vaccinated status or I'll wind up in the ICU, I went to my local ER room and had my lungs looked and they were perfectly clear. So I did not take the Paxlovid. I used lots of fresh garlic, ginger, tumeric and chamomile tea and ate really well and had a mild to moderate case. The problem with Dr. Fauci and Pres Biden was that they demonized anyone who did not want to be vaccinated, including ppl with allergies to meds or who suffer with certain medical conditions. I was very careful and stayed in for two full weeks, until I had a negative test.. Thank God my friends were so nice and not paranoid and we'd meet often outdoors in the nice weather. But it was not easy being unvaccinated and I had plenty of snide remarks from relatives and doctors about how I was not doing my part. I do not regret my decision, however, and do not plan on getting any shots in the future.

So many died after their vax but were counted as unvaxxed deaths due Fauci saying that you are not considered vaxxed until 2 weeks after your second shot. It's just disgusting.

Clearly remember, I was watching the news in Lima Peru my hometown when I heard that president Bush was encouraging medical professionals to come to the United States and offering to get easier immigration visas. A month later, I was not sure if that was true. I gathered all my papers ( I had already passed the foreign exam for nurses) in told the ambassador I wanted to work as a nurse ( of course after interviewing with hospitals who were crying for nurses) and Yes I got the visa that said it allowed me to come to the USA to interview with hospitals prior to working as a nurse. That changed my life. Love this country. Now I am a nurse practitioner serving veterans. Thanks, president Bush Sr.

I am 64 years old and I have not had a flu since 1973. I attribute this to becoming a vegetarian and NEVER going to see a Medical Doctor or take any of their drugs. Medical "Science" is filled with junk science. The third leading cause of death is Medical misdiagnosis. A life of clean organic food, zero processed food and junk food is the key to healthy living. Death is not to be feared . . . it's a beautiful experience for the soul leaving this dimension. The deepest sorrow is for the loved ones on Earth. The more we love . . . the longer we live. Life is beautiful on both sides. The biggest difference is on the spiritual side . . . you are immersed in a love so profound, you are in an eternal state of bliss.

i saw reagan's surgeon general koop once in an interview where he talked about trying to get reagan's attention on doing something about aids. so after months of just being ignored he produced a brochure for every american home to alert the public about what was then known about the disease and he had it printed on the most expensive paper that was available at the government printing office. once reagan found out about it and that there was nothing he could do over what koop had done he gave the go ahead to mail the brochures.

I noticed a big change in Reagan's attitude about HIV/AIDS after his friend Rock Hudson died from complications from AIDS.

Yes, Reagan ignored the AIDS crisis for far too long. There are many people who lack empathy, they refuse to address issues like this unless they are directly affected. For instance, the Reagan’s were vehemently opposed to stem cell research until Ronny developed Alzheimer’s. Suddenly, Nancy was an advocate for stem cell research 🤦🏻‍♀️

People who chided, scapegoated and accused Dr. Fauci just broke my heart and I still see Congress members who do this today. It's debilitating to our values to have them throw down the gauntlet on medicine, professional experience and best practice. I wish I knew what to say to help them out of that fugue state.

I have read the book Sibling Society by Robert Bly and it focuses on how in this era unlike others we dismiss the wisdom of the aged as valuable. I am wondering if this explains the unpopularity in modern culture of experts especially those that are older.

I am so deeply thankful for Dr. Faucci - my uncle is still alive after being on death row in the ‘80s… he’s in his 70’s now and was one of the first patients to use these drugs spoken of here. HIV has been undetectable in his blood for a long, long, long time now. His partner, my other uncle, died that terrible death - and I know Dr. Faucci is a real human b/c PTSD after his work back then makes complete sense. I’m glad there are still heroes out there - it’s harder to see them in this current climate where a cult of personality is sucking the air out of the room and spreading stupidity. Thank you LiveTalks for this platform and fantastic interview! Thank YOU Dr. Faucci for saving lives, thank you for my uncle.
