Thanks for making this video. I think I read somewhere where you shouldn’t mix/stir breastmilk because it disrupts the nutrients. So if you use the pitch mixer that’s made for formula, would that harm the breastmilk???? I’m so confused.

Great question! There’s a great article on nursingmoms.net that talks about stirring milk. It’s important to mix the milk so the fat is evenly distributed. Spoiled milk doesn’t allow the fat to mix into the rest of the milk so it’s a good indicator if the milk has gone bad. Some people say that shaking the milk deteriorates the proteins in it but it hasn’t been proven. I’ll try to link the article in the description 😄

Hi guys, I'm a food scientist. Swirling slightly is fine that will not be enough force to denature the proteins. If you over stir then yes you could potentially disrupt or also break fat globules but takes a lot more force to do that. Don't worry about the slight stir.

@@4WattersPlease So, it turns out that the CDC very recently recanted what they’d recommended about mixing temperatures. They’re not saying they don’t recommend it again because it lowers the temperature of the cooled milk. The CDC flip flops too much. You’d think they’d actually measure the level of bacteria instead of guessing what’s the best approach.

Thank you for this video!! I’m exclusively pumping, I hated that I wasn’t able to breastfeed exclusively. It took me a long time to accept the fact that Pumping IS Breastfeeding! My son was too easily frustrated and I wasn’t able to spend the time to help him because I had to rush back to work ASAP. He was also not gaining weight with just my milk also, so we are needing to mix in some formula into my milk to supplement his calorie intake. Its easy to lose heart, but I am feeling much more confident now. 🥰

Back in 2016 when I had my first, I’d lost too much blood and my milk didn’t even come in. I formula fed her and I’d get hate for not bf her. One guy told me he was glad it was a bottle I pulled out and not my breast. This time around, 4 weeks in and I’m still bf but topping up with formula and I’ve been called selfish for trying to cut out people from her life because I’m bfing her. You can can’t please everyone. Congratulations on your daughter! I didn’t necessarily eat anything special. However, I did drink a lot of coconut water! I personally liked it because if I didn’t drink that much water that day it would help me with hydration. I know some people don’t like coconut water so some moms I know would drink Body Armor drinks. I can’t recommend them since I’ve never tried them but do some research! From what I read, some people really noticed a difference drinking them. 😊

@natalienash9680
@natalienash9680 3 жыл бұрын
When you empty the bottle from the last pumping session, are you putting the fresh expressed milk into the bottle you just emptied? The empty bottle would be cold with a little bit of cold milk in it, so how could you add the fresh milk to it and it be okay? Also, when you started this method and pumped for the next day what did you use for bottles the day of? I’m doing the pitcher method, but I’m using some of the milk for bottles that I need for that day. I hope these questions make sense.
@rociorogers1475
@rociorogers1475 3 жыл бұрын
They make sense! So sometimes I would use the same bottle or usually a clean dry one to pour my milk. I never had issues but I can see why it be a concern for some because we’re always told not to mix cold and warm milk. We actually bought a few cheap bottles that were only used to pour my freshly pumped milk. That way we weren’t waisting money on expensive ones and were able to use clean/dry ones as needed. So for the ‘day of’ bottles, we used the Kiinde bags (same ones you saw in the video). They were pricey so I don’t necessarily recommend but that’s what my daughter liked. What you could do is prep the bottles at night and as your baby eats the next day just wash the bottles so you can prep them at night. Or you can just keep your milk in the pitcher and prep them as you go the next day. This is why I always recommend two pitchers anyway. I hope this makes sense ! 😃

@rociorogers1475
@rociorogers1475 3 жыл бұрын
So I normally add the milk to my pitcher after my next pump. That way I’m not having to keep tracking of my next pumping session & time to transfer the milk. As for work I will normally pump & store my milk in the Lansinoh bags. I keep them in my fridge and then transfer them to my Kiinde pumping bag. My compute home is very short so once I get home my milk is still cold so I pour into the pitcher.

The reason they say not to mix different temperature milk is because it can cause bacteria to grow. Personally I just use a cheap bottle to add my freshly pumped milk in the fridge. Once it’s cold I mix it into my pitcher. I used to store my milk in separate bags for each session and I was wasting so many bags & like I mentioned in the video, I pumped different amounts each session. The pitcher method truly made things so much easier!

Ashley Nícole according to cdc.gov freshly pumped milk can be stored in the fridge for 4 days 🙂 there are so many websites with different timeframes but I recommend following the CDC guidelines and the average I’ve always seen suggested is 4-5 days in the fridge. Hope this helps!

Wow this is amazing, I am amazed how much milk you are producing, my baby is 6 weeks old, I am also exclusively pumping and I am only getting 3-4 oz per pump every 2-3 hours. I dont know if I am making enough milk for my baby, I am really struggling. Any tips on how to increase my milk supply?

Based on your baby’s age I think you’re probably making enough! Most baby’s don’t need a lot of milk when they’re so small. The biggest tip I have is to continue pumping! Don’t get discouraged. Those first few weeks are really going to set a foundation. Make sure you’re eating a healthy balanced diet. I remember struggling to eat but I made sure to eat to ensure I produced enough milk. Also try power pumping! That really helped me.

Do you do a dream feed if so do you give your baby the same amount of ounces as in the day?
@rociorogers1475
@rociorogers1475 3 жыл бұрын
I personally don’t dream feed. I did some reading on this and the goal of dream feeding is to “top them off” so they sleep better throughout the night. I would recommend gauging to see how much your little one will take with dream feeding. Maybe start with an oz and see how they do .... since baby isn’t fully awake they probably won’t eat much.

How did you make that much milk?☹ Also, I don't see the difference of the pitcher method compared to the usual process of storing milk. Please enlighten me. Unless, that's your preference... The reason why I'm asking is because I am a breastfeeding mother and I am trying to explore my options whatever will work when it comes to storing milk for my baby. I am impressed how much milk you produced. I am envious...☹
@rociorogers1475
@rociorogers1475 3 жыл бұрын
I think the reason I make so much milk is because I started with a strong foundation. When I first started pumping I pumped 8 times a day for 25 mins. At first I only got a few drops, but eventually by sticking to that routine I was telling my body it needed to produce milk. Had I gotten discouraged and stopped pumping as much, my body would of stopped producing. The trick is to tell your body it needs to make milk so by pumping often I was able to do just that. Before doing the pitcher method I was storing my pumped milk into bags. Every pump session I produced a different amount of milk. For example, in the mornings I can easily produce about 9 oz and sometimes in the afternoon I only produce about 6 oz. This was an inconvenience when I was preparing her bottles. By having all the milk in one pitcher, I’m able to prep her bottles for the next day much easier. I hope this helps answer some of your questions 🙂

@@rociorogers1475 Great! Thanks for your response. I appreciated it! Now, I got it... It makes more sense now. So, can you put the milk together that you pumped in a day? Doesn't matter the time? If so, that will be more convenient. Coz' I thought we go by the time, too...😬🤔 Also, maybe the sunflower lecithin does boost more your milk supply after your initial pumping experience? Because on some days, I prefer to just give my breastmilk to my baby directly instead. Please confirm. Otherwise, I will also buy that supplement.☺
@rociorogers1475
@rociorogers1475 3 жыл бұрын
Yes you can combine your breastmilk for that day. Remember that breast milk is good for a few days in the fridge so with the pitcher method your baby should typically drink it the next day. Now, for the sunflower lecithin it’s not necessary intended to increase milk production. It helps with the flow of milk and helps prevent and treat clogged milk ducts. I like it because it makes the flow of my milk much smoother. 😃

This seems like a lot of extra works. I EP too and I just pump and divide into bags as I go through the day and it doesn’t take much time. Why put it into a pitcher and then divide it up in the end anyway? I also have a huge freezer stash
@rociorogers1475
@rociorogers1475 3 жыл бұрын
I did this method because I pumped different amounts each session. It’s also easier to equally distribute the milk when it’s coming from the pitcher instead of different bags with various amounts. So for example in the morning I would easily pump 13 oz while at night time I would only pump 6. I just personally didn’t care for having to pour from the bags and try to divide everything up. Doing it once at night worked for us. My husband and I could prep her bottles for the next day. It just worked better for us but I’m glad the other method worked for you 😇

First time mom here and I just had a question about using this method! I thought the reason people use special sealable bags and refrigerate/freeze left over milk after pumping was because there could be a growth of bacteria and that’s obviously bad for baby. Sorry everything is so confusing and overwhelming, so many different sides to everything!
@rociorogers1475
@rociorogers1475 3 жыл бұрын
Nekobaby To make sure your milk is protected always follow the CDC guidelines for storing milk. That’ll help prevent any bacteria from growing. The good thing about the pitcher method is that you should essentially use the milk you pump today for tomorrow and freeze anything that’s left over. This way your baby is drinking the milk within 24 hour of pumping. Personally I’ve used both bags and pitcher method and have never had issues with my milk growing bacteria or going bad. The bags became overwhelming because they were messier and I pumped different amounts each time. I hope this helps!

@@rociorogers1475 I bet! I’m not an over producer but I did try this method after I saw your video. I noticed that I would get through most of the milk but it seemed like there was always a small amount at the bottom that wouldn’t get used. Then I thought it couldn’t be good to continuously have that leftover and adding fresh milk on top of it, so thank you for clearing it up ❤️ I loved your video!

I personally mixed morning/afternoon/night milk together. I heard the same thing about night milk as well so I decided to try it. If I’m honest, I didn’t notice any difference in my baby. I also wasn’t producing enough during my late sessions so separating my milk didn’t work for us. If you’d like to try it, I used two pitchers. I put some tape on them and just labeled one pitcher day milk & one night milk.

Personally for my baby I didn’t notice any difference. She slept the same when she drank “night milk” and mixed milk. I also didn’t like this method because I didn’t produce enough in my late sessions so sometimes I had to reach for my day milk anyway. Mixing my milk worked great for us.
