We were so lucky! We had a wonderful infancy, growing up in Mexico surrounded by a big family including my maternal grand parents, aunts, uncles and cousins all of them were so close and caring and loving.

Amen. I grew up in a financially secure home but lacking in love empathy and bonding. You were blessed . I was severely crippled by my family's lack of love but will recover and heal

This talk makes so much sense. Very sobering sense. I have been saying for a number of years now that our brains haven’t evolved to handle all this artificial and constant stimulation. I cannot even pump gas without a screen talking at me. It feels unavoidable unless I am alone in the woods; everyone is on a device when I am out in a public space 😕 I don’t like it at all. I am 47 years old and this is a world that doesn’t resonate with me 😕

Forest school offers a real opportunity to establish positive relational abilities in children and adults and everyone in between. It has been shown to increase empathy and lead to the development of neural generation and regeneration

but i think the reason why households are getting smaller - not only in the u.s. but worldwide - is that something within these families must have been wrong, or why did it fall apart so drastically? I have heard of abuse within families and i suspect this as a reason. Like we still can see today that big families or clans are rarely living in peace and harmony together. In these clans i see children as the most welcome and weakest victims. First we learn to speak, then we learn to silence (the ugly secrets of a selfcontrolled family) To me Dr. Perry was the light I've been looking for so long. I am glad he and his colleagues are keen to make this public, it gives me an odd kind of hope, that humanity is not yet lost

One hypothesis is urbanization and modern capitalism, two forces that 'encouraged' the development of nuclear families and for people to work outside of the homes (as opposed to family farms or guilds). First it was the fathers, then the mothers. Children spent less and less time with primary adults, interpersonal bonds became weaker and weaker, and (seemingly) less and less important . . . until we are all lonely because it's easier to live alone, our history of relationships tells us they are risky, and we have the financial means to do it. .

If you can't figure it out, then I don't know what to tell you. Big families were never what they were cracked up to be. The reason families got smaller is because women became educated and birth control came into existence. More and more women realize they could say no not just to big families but to men, period. Family life is hugely overrated.
