00:10 Different genre: 1) Hymns (Psalms of Zion, Psalms of King), 2) Petition Psalms (Lament/Complaint), 3) Instruction 5:00 Wicket Gate Psalm (entrance)-Ps 1 (gateway into book). Cf. Pilgrim’s Progress. 6:10 Translation of Psalm 1: man = individual in contrast to others, Gender translational issue. The mother was taught and teaching in Proverbs. Inclusive language: NIV - blessed are they; “Blessed is the person who walks not in the counsel of the wicked… But their delight is in the law of the Lord… That person is like a tree planted by streams of water… I AM knows the way of the righteous … 10:45 Blessed - many translate it “happy”; two Hebrew words for bless: 1) barak: to bless; to be filled with the potency of life, fruitful and multiply); 2) ashre: you have a blessed destiny, future based on your present relationship with God. 13:30: Eliphaz’ speech, blessed future; Greek of Beatitudes (Mt 5) future destiny. That is not translated for “happy” - ashre: “how fortunate” 15:10 Sounds: ashre ish asher catch the sounds; blessed one who.. poetry; can’t translate it 17:00 Blessed the person who does not walk in the way of the wicked, or stand in the way of sinners-NIV changed it: stand in the way (oppose) - stand in the way sinners take. 18:50 Poetry: is figurative language, terse. Two dominant metaphors: 1) tree / chaff; and 2) way. Way is a dominant metaphor in Scripture. Jesus-I am the way. Connotation: 1) character/disposition; 2) context/community of saints/identity, 3) conduct (what do you do) and 4) consequences. Forms an inclusion: begins with “way” and ends with “way” Lord knows the way of righteous/sinners 23:40 Righteous: are those who disadvantage themselves to advantage others (wicked contrary). Creech on “righteous”-God and humanity; righteous depend on God for protection, worship in humility, plead for forgiveness. Relate to God as servant to king/dependent. Humanity: they love and serve their neighbors. Clean hands and pure heart. 29:00 Wicked: flatter themselves, and advance their own cause, self-absorbed (righteous are God absorbed). Wicked avenge themselves. 31:40: Torah: catechetical instruction or teaching, the ten commands are a way of life, no penalty in them, torah refers back to the Mosaic law in Psalms, Sinai is above Zion. 34:00 Rhetoric: how is Psalm 1 structured. Stitching effect. God is a poet, God is an aesthetic. + / - for each line, stitched together. C.S. Lewis was offended by imprecatory psalms but he says: “Psalms are like lace” patterns. Way of the righteous 1:1-3//Way of Wicked 1:4-6. Cause/Pictured/consequences//consequences/picture/cause. He sees it as couplets: Cause of way, consequences pictured, consequences plainly stated. 39:20 The Cause of the Rewarded Life: renounces sin, progressive hardening. Anabasis: building up  blessed counsel/behavior/identification. Katabasis: walking, standing, sitting. Heightening and slowing  progressive hardening into sin. Poe’s poem: Vice is a monster. … familiarity  acceptance. The Medussa sex and violence on TV, hearts are turned to stone, no longer offended. 45:20 By contrast: he delights in the law of the Lord. Delight in word of God (not just Mosaic law). 48:35 He meditates on it (Prov 2) accept my teaching, store up my commands. Cry out for it. Seek it=meditate, chew it. 50:00 Consequences: like tree by streams of water; nahal (wadi), nahar (river), but here a canal. River flowing from the temple in archaeological remains, canal pictured. Like a river with canals off the river 52:20 Consequences for the wicked -- Chaff: has no root, blown away. Righteous endure.
