00:00-1:30 Opening prayer 1:31 How do we approach the Psalms so we understand them. We are trying to understand how they mean. Recapping the historical approach meaning. Different approaches help us to understand the text. David is author of 73 of the Psalms attributed to him. Most higher education opposes Davidic author. If David is the author than it is the king who is speaking. Royal hymnbook. 6:30 Royal Psalms look at king throughout the Psalms. Look at Ps 4 as a Psalm of David examining it from the king’s viewpoint. Introduction and exegesis/exposition; translation. Importance to include the voice of the church historically-here Chrysostom and Augustine. 10:50 What’s the crisis? Form and rhetorical of Psalm 4; exposition of the psalm 11:40 Onto the intro. of Psalm of David and his translations of certain Hebrew words; “how long high born men” (leadership/wealth). Bene-ish in contrast Bene-adam (humankind). Ps. 49:2 high is bene-ish; bene-adam lowborn; cf. also Ps.62:9. High-born men turning glory into shame…leadership is losing faith in him. This is the crisis: apostasy. King / God shame (another god). False god is Baal (rain/storm) - historical perspective importance. This is his leadership 20:00 Restore their confidence by a series of imperatives, How critical interpretation: does it mean “more than when grain and new wine abound”. Is it that the wine fills with joy or saying that joy he is requesting is “more than wine”? With “et” from the time when not comparative. “Fill (imperative) my heart with great joy when their grain and new wine abound (temporal not comparative as NIV not ESV).” Collocation: butter-fly; how words work together to get it right. 26:40 Church Historical Approach: Augustine doesn’t talk about God but to God. Great heritage in church history. 29:13 Leadership is losing faith in him (King and God). Why are they defecting? There is a drought, no rain, no harvest of wheat or wine. Gathered from the petition section of the Psalm. What is this good that they are asking for? It may refer to rain and crops. Ps. 85:12-good is the produce from the land. 34:00 No mention of enemy in this Psalm (one of three laments with no enemy). 34:50 Solomon's prayer - he names 7 crises. One of them is famine, “when the heavens shut up and there is no rain…than hear from heaven…” (1 Kgs 8). 35:50 Second crises: King is responsible for the rain. Ashurbanipal boasts of relation to storm god giving rain. God’s favored him so he takes credit for rain. Pharaoh “It is I who produce the grain because who was beloved by the grain god.” 39:30 Third Crisis: king was to be potent in prayer. Gap between virtue and rewards. If God gave rewards immediately it would destroy virtue. Our sufferings produce virtue. Gapping in these times we develop spiritually and a life of faith. How long? 42:40 C.S. Lewis, the king’s rule in jeopardy when crisis happens king will not offer his son but trusts in God. God’s son triumphed over death. 44:50 The form of this psalm is a lament. Address to God, Petition, Lament, Confidence, Petition, Praise to God by going to sleep in crisis-he’s at peace because of his faith 45:50 Rhetoric: superscription: addressed to God, then to high born (vss 2-5). Then addresses God (I AM). Six admonitions: tremble, be silent, offer sacrifices and trust… Director of music is post-script. Not just king but given to the people. King and people sing together. Give hope in a drought not to despair. 48:45 Exposition: King gives it. He has special glory. He’s in corporate solidarity with people. No reason to question David’s authorship. 50:00 Three requests: answer, relief, and be gracious; Elohim: God in his transcendence and aseity. YHWH which means I AM his covenantal personal name how he relates to his people. In intertestamental people they started using “LORD” for YHWH. Apostles prayed in the name of Jesus. 54:00 My God-personal. Grace-meet my need. 54:50 What does prayer mean? To evaluate a case, make a decision and intervene. Strong’s numbers in his concordance used in his Theological Wordbook (Moody). 58:15 to high born apostates (vss. 2-5): seven admonitions, accusations: Accusation: turning to worthless idols rather than the potent king and against God. Vss. 2-5 his address apostates, Know your king first admonition, vss. 4-5 3 pairs of admonitions to encourage confidence, -- run after 3: money, sex and pride/seeking the praise of people. 1:03 First Admonition: know the potency of the king in prayer, God loves this king. In the book The Shack: Reimaging God is like blasphemy. He’s known as Father (not mother). Follow the Bible not the Shack. Know your king. God did hear him. 1:05:30 How did David know he was the king? The prophet anointed him and Spirit came on him, then he fought Goliath. How do we know Jesus is the Son of God: In John 5: 1) John the Baptist witness, 2) voice of God from heaven, 3) his works and 4) the testimony of Scripture. How do we know we are the children of God?

Description: This lecture by Dr. Bruce Waltke elaborates, as the title suggests, focuses on Psalm 4. He speaks on many aspects of the Psalm 4 including the crises which the psalm addresses, the multifaceted role of the king, and issues of authorship of it-which is believed to be mostly attributable to David although many reject that. Drought and the high born addressees of the book are developed. Additionally, Dr. Waltke discusses the motifs of the Psalms, which primarily consist of addresses of adoration to God, or laments, expressing grief to God and asking him for guidance.
