Dr. Chatham (“Chad”) Callan is the Director of the Finfish Research Program at Oceanic Institute of Hawaii Pacific University (OI). OI has been a world leader in the development of applied aquaculture technologies for both marine fish and shrimp for over 50 years.
He has been at OI for over 14 years and has researched the culture of numerous marine fish species ranging from Mullet, Jacks, Rabbitfish and Groupers as well as ornamental species such as Dwarf Angelfish and Yellow Tang. In 2015, his lab at OI was the first to successfully culture the Yellow Tang, which is the most commercially important reef species in that region. His lab continues to refine the culture processes for this, and many other, marine species in aims to provide additional sustainable alternatives to their wild collection.

MACNA needs more talks like this. The cool things about our hobby can be found in the lobby at all the booths. The talks should be focused on understanding what the natural environment is doing and how we impact it. More scientific = better :)

Makes me wonder how these fish survive the first week in the ocean. Do the copepod nauplii densities in the wild ever approach what these researchers are using to get the larvae to eat?
@zsxking

I haven't see study around it, but I would guess, the survival rate in wild is even lower, cause all the other predators that would eat them in all stages. They even it out by producing lots of eggs.

@@zafishguy5166 As far as I understand it, these tiny larvae aren't capable of the sort of movement that would take them to where food might be more plentiful. They are pretty much at the mercy of the currents.

@@zsxking I would guess the same thing. Though it still doesn't explain how these tiny larvae manage to find enough food if they are reliant on a food source that is only the right size for them at less than 2 days old. Even if the water was teaming with copepods, only a tiny percentage of them would be the right size.

A 2.5" wild yellow tang costs $55. A 2.5" aquacultured yellow tang costs $130. That's over 2.36 times as expensive. This is probably the only reason people don't buy aquacultured.

This does make it a challenge! It will take a change in mindset to assist in the change to aquaculture, but we have seen more of this recently.
