Dr Chee Soon Juan criticises Ho Ching’s vision for 8-10 million population

Dr Chee Soon Juan, Secretary-General of the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP), slammed Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong's spouse, Ho Ching, for her assertion that Singapore could accommodate 8 to 10 million people with proper city planning and land reclamation.
In a video message published on 1 October, Dr Chee expressed strong scepticism regarding the narrative of increasing the population, highlighting that the current surge past the 6 million mark had been largely driven by the influx of foreigners, which led to several adverse consequences.
He further highlighted that smaller populations were not inherently negative, drawing examples from some Scandinavian countries that had flourished on the international stage despite their smaller populations and had even produced Nobel Prize laureates.

I'm true blue Singaporean, divorced with no kid, approaching 60, semi retired, and financially well. If I'm blessed, I'd live for another 15-20 years then I'll be gone, so whatever policies that PAP going to implement will not effect me much. However, the only people I truly pity are my nephews and nieces and ESPECIALLY their little children. I won't be around by the time my little grand nephews & nieces grow up into working adults. I cannot imagine how stressful it is for them, having to live their lives squeezing with 10m or more other people who are mostly foreigners, on this tiny island. If I, this generation, already feel the heat today, i cannot imagine how my grand nephews and nieces would feel. It will be a furnace for them,with ever rising taxes and rising costs to pay, smaller and smaller but more and more expensive flats, competitive working salaries, sardine-can like commuting, global warming due to more concrete than natural forests, etc. Whatever decisions we make today has the greatest impact not on ourselves, but on our descendants.

hmm, very true, is getting cramped, people are getting emotionally triggered over small issues, trains are always overloading, TFR is getting lower in every year's forecast but blocks of flats keep sprouting preparing for the next hike in population. Getting employed is a hard question, staying employed becomes a problem. As I have heard , even in every trade, there are singaporeans willing to work , but not preferred when you cannot commit Sat and Suns. And the explanation was Singaporeans are choosing jobs. In all trades , corporate, engineering, etc, we are all being branded not in a good way, but there are good ones who actually accepts pay cuts, no bonus and others. No one can stop that from happening, in 2000 our population are 4.03m and 2024 6.04m, a 2 million increase in less than 25 year. Increase population increase $ . Singapore go by head count ,etc GST. But for local there no benefit. A simple issue public transport. 6 million every day peak hour cant have any seat. Why we need to suffer that and without benefit. Reality,for this few years what we as local gain for the increase of population. As a management staff of a company, during engagement of new staff most of the locals will lose out. Mom set a wages guide line for EP but does mom set that for singaporean ? When MoM set the above regulation, alot of my EP colleagues over night have pay increment.

The actual statement from her is to suggest for better planning - refine city planning so that there can be more living and play space for the people. If a housing agent tells you a 4 room flat can accommodate 20 people, will you take his words for it and squeeze in 20 people to live in it? Or do you take it as the flat can accommodate 20 people in a party? Speaking objectively here and please read actual information instead of filtered information used politically by politicians
