The whole speech on productivity has no numbers or statistics quoted, so how to compare and analyse just based on words? And in the absence if numbers, assume we accept productivity in South Korea, Japan and Taiwan has performed better than Singapore, did the salaries in these countries grow in tandem with the productivity growth? I do agree innovation in Singapore may not be at the same level as these 3 countries, but this issue is different from the issue around productivity.

You have to distinguish between what is creativity and what is productivity. Productivity can be a result of creativity and innovations . But productivity is not equal to creativity and the conditions to produce innovations and creativity and productivity is vastly different. ATM machines raises productivity because it frees up cashier's time and allow them to do other things. Self service is a very effective form of productivity. Getting your customers to do things themselves helps release resources in the business organisation to allow personnel to be deployed to do other things or to reduce workers employed and reduce cost. So computerisation , e-government , automation are productivity tools that are available because of creativity. There is a limit to creativity in Singapore because our climate, limited market size, small population will not allow creativity to thrive. But our people are productive which allows our workers' salaries to rise over time . Rent seeking is difficult in Singapore because the government is smarter than you think and hard to influence.

Dr Chee's persistence and endurance are to be respected. Unfortunately,there has never been any evidence of 'democratic government' linkage to economics growth nor productivity growth. Instead US ,UK and Taiwan etc are shinning examples of the linkage between 'democracy' and the social unrest and the unbridled lies that produced by their msm. Singapore 'low'productivity could partly be due the policy of adopting population growth to induce economic growth. Now we need to push on the innovation lever to squeeze out our productivity. Population growth has a limit. 'Democracy' as advocated is surely not the answer. Dr Chee will likely be disappointed with the path he his treading. On the whole, Singapore is not doing too badly.

He is "brain washed" by the West. If freedom and democracy can solve econmic problems then the West (Europe, UK and USA) are to be hold up as models. But they are not. They are in a deep hole themselves. Dr Chee, we know what is productivity - efficiency or output over input. So what is your solution in improving productivity or efficiency besides automation. Are your staff willing to do 2 -3 person jobs and get paid for 1.5 person? Taiwan's young people are paid miserably and cannot even afford their own home. South Korea has their own problems too. No viable solution.
