#gabormate #addiction #trauma Doctor Gabor Maté is an internationally renowned speaker highly sought after for his expertise on addiction, trauma, childhood development, and the relationship of stress and illness. His books include ""Scattered Minds: A New Look at the Origins and Healing of Attention Deficit Disorder"", ""When the Body Says No: The Cost of Hidden Stress”, ""Hold on to Your Kids: Why Parents Need to Matter More Than Peers” and ""In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction”. In his second How To Academy event, he explicates his groundbreaking theory of addiction and all it encompasses: from generational trauma to willpower, from evolution to modern civilisation.
In PART 1 of his How To Academy Event, Gabor addresses how addiction is an attempt to solve suffering, how heroin use can be safer than alcohol and smoking, why willpower isn’t the magic bullet cure for addiction, and how he was addicted to buying classical music.

Yes I am from the UK and I think you right. I also think it makes people quite cynical and passive agressive in the UK because they repress this stuff. Its a shame she didn't have the insight to realise how beneficial for herself, the audience and every viewer of this video it would have been to engage in that process. I think that in itself shows the repression of these topics. I have empathy because i realise how difficult it is.

At 15:20 -- It's painful to watch an interviewer not only couldn't understand the definition of addiction Dr Mate repeated a few times but also refused his request for audience to respond because she couldn't understand that at that moment (not half hour later!) is the exact right time to bring audience in for interactive engagement for an effective talk, especially since she refused to engage (it is totally fine not want to reveal personal stuff, but don't restrict others who want to engage!).

He really hit a nerve there. She was visibly uncomfortable, which leads me to believe that there is a lot she is covering up. Then again, her deflection was making me (and probably a lot of other people) because she just seemed like someone so classically in denial. Either just say you aren't comfortable expressing your personal feelings in public or defer to the audience. But she seemed almost too threatened by his premise.

As he says, look at yourself and inquire with compassion. We buried our emotions as young children because they were too painful, but now that we are adults, we can care for ourselves with compassion, go back into the painful memories and emotions, to be our own best friend as we release them. For me, this has brought many, many tears and anguish, but the amazing thing is that I can release them safely, as my own s Self and best friend would let me do. Dr Gabor, great talk! Question. Would you say that I, as well as most people are addicted to work? I’m an engineer and sit in front of computer for 8+ hours a day, and lately notice it’s taking a toll on my health, so the negative long term consequences are there. But through work we’re creating significant value for society and make other people’s lives easier (and for future generations). Where do we draw the line between addiction that should be stopped, and a sacrifice worth pursuing?
@gunnikr
@gunnikr 2 жыл бұрын
Creating significant value is debatable. I find so many jobs are “useless” jobs created to continue a materialistic economy. For example, you could afford one income families easily before primarily because most people in your subdivision would have the same boring stuff. Now with media and access to the world, everyone wants the latest phones and clothes etc. We eat out soo much! Why are there so many fast food options? Those create jobs but if we weren’t so spendy then maybe only some jobs would be needed more than others?

Addictions are like money. You may have different currencies but it's all money. You can earn it,loose it you can give it away or it can be stolen. The nature of it is the same however the culture isn't. This is a metaphor that popped into my head as I was processing his idea. I have boderline personality disorder so addiction is something I have spent years breaking down this really gave me a slightly different view. My one question is, is anything without negative impact? I don't think anything is purely bad or good. I have battled self harm and I still struggle to believe it's wrong because although it does hurt my body to me the benefits out weight the negitive in my mind. I try to sort of except I'm wrong about self harm and hoped one day it would make sense. I haven't been hurt myself in years but in all honesty I still feel like it was more like a passion of mine. I wonder if any passion you have could only affect you positively.

@@harrietyounger6118 No, not at all. Pain, love or what we believe love, saving the world, trying to be only good in a polar world, power - it can be anything. And things can be placed on a range, going from habit to bad habit, from passion to uncontrollable passion and finally become things we are totally hooked on. I guess it belongs to people because we are no robots. We try to cope with our emotions and experiences but if we go too far we end up being a zombie instead of a robot. It's all balancing....and I think how deeper, earlier and bigger the trauma and pain, how bigger the chance to extremer response and coping. I don't believe in healthy and normal, at least not as an ultimate good. You see lots of broken and damaged people, in one way or another, but we often feel superior when our problematic is less obvious than that of our fellow humans and/ or we are less aware of it or it's socially more acceptable. I agree with the doc, 90 % has some kind of addiction and 10% lies about it. At least.

he understands the similarity and stresses on the similarity because his understanding is based on compassion and love. And love is the basis for the most part or the lack of addiction, passion and meaning, self control awareness and being concious and awakened to a certain degree of capacity. its quite understandable to well understand that many do not have addiction but if you think about it you are addicted to wasting time or doing things that do not contribute to humanity or serve a necessary utility for the people. We're prone to live our life on autopilot and that is because we let our animal instinct drive our behaviour and we lust after things, greedful behaviour and the usual concept of sinful behaviour on the list of bad behaviour are trivial yet they are just normal behaviour because it is hard to change for better and that makes us mediocre!?. to make much more sense outwork everyone or just be like goggins. we are slaves to comfort and despise suffering. we are in denial. we run away from most of our problems and waste ourselves everyday. take extreme ownership and responsibility it's hard but there is more meaning and helpful. It's not much to talk about being that irrelevant or not so harmful to self or others but at the end we do not find it that meaningful yet we do it and stay the same. Can this way of thinking help us point towards our lack of self control and observing such behaviours bring a change in all of us. Im guilty of all of these and i find that being compassionate but not lenient on such things could help us focus on things although it would be a personal act of change.

OMG seeing this woman squirm and dodge this question like a politician is so cringe. Role playing is just ego. You got to be vulnerable if you want to venture into the spiritual realm. What happened here is called playing pretend.

How to get an echo, make your voice go woing-woing-woing, hear yourself coming back at yourself: 1.) Step One: record in front of the hardest possible surface you can find. A solid wall interrupted only by glass windows is a good idea. That's it. That's all you need to do. Don't, for the life of you, have curtains or cloth-covered surfaces anywhere near you. These tend to make your voice clearly audible the way Maté's is.

I think he is saying exactly the opposite. He is saying our circumstances affect us and by being able to recognize when they have affected us in a negative way, we can begin to overcome them. His example for himself was of compulsive shopping, and once he was open to acknowledging his addiction, he was able to let it go.
