Can a person literally die of loneliness? Is there a connection between the ability to express emotions and Alzheimer’s disease? Is there such a thing as a “cancer personality”? Drawing on scientific research and the author’s decades of experience as a practicing physician, Dr Gabor Maté joined How To Academy to explore the role that stress and emotions play in an array of common diseases, including arthritis, cancer, diabetes, heart disease and multiple sclerosis.
In this talk, Dr. Maté shared his insights into how disease can be the body’s way of saying ‘no’ to that which the mind cannot or will not acknowledge. He weaves together scientific research, case histories, and his own insights and experience to present a broad perspective to enlighten and empower individuals to promote their own healing and that of those around them.

@@luchiayoung "The individual psychological stages in the lives of most people are: 1. To be hurt as a small child without anyone recognizing the situation as such 2. To fail to react to the resulting suffering with anger 3. To show gratitude for what are supposed to be good intentions 4. To forget everything 5. To discharge the stored-up anger onto others in adulthood or to direct it against oneself. Every life and every childhood is filled with frustrations; we cannot imagine it otherwise, for even the best mother cannot satisfy all her child’s wishes and needs. It is not the suffering caused by frustration, however, that leads to emotional illness, but rather the fact that the child is forbidden by the parents to experience and articulate this suffering, the pain felt at being wounded. An unacknowledged trauma is like a wound that never heals over and may start to bleed again at any time. A person is not likely to conceive something monstrous if he does not know it somehow or other from experience. We simply tend to refuse to take a child's suffering seriously enough. We are still barely conscious of how harmful it is to treat children in a degrading manner. Treating them with respect and recognizing the consequences of their being humiliated are by no means intellectual matters; otherwise, their importance would long since have been generally recognized. Without realizing that the past is constantly determining their present actions, they avoid learning anything about their history. They continue to live in their repressed childhood situation, ignoring the fact that is no longer exists, continuing to fear and avoid dangers that, although once real, have not been real for a long time. The abused child goes on living within those who have survived such torture, a torture that ended with total repression. They live with the darkness of fear, oppression, and threats. When all its attempts to move the adult to heed its story have failed, it resorts to the language of symptoms to make itself heard. Enter addiction, psychosis, criminality. What is addiction, really? It is a sign, a signal, a symptom of distress. It is a language that tells us about a plight that must be understood. Ultimately the body will rebel. Even if it can be temporarily pacified with the help of drugs, cigarettes or medicine, it usually has the last word because it is quicker to see through self-deception than the mind. We may ignore or deride the messages of the body, but its rebellion demands to be heeded because its language is the authentic expression of our true selves and of the strength of our vitality. Contempt is the weapon of the weak and a defense against one's own despised and unwanted feelings. The function all expressions of contempt have in common is the defense against unwanted feelings. Contempt simply evaporates, having lost its point, when it is no longer useful as a shield-against the child’s shame over his desperate, unreturned love; against his feeling of inadequacy; or above all against his rage that his parents were not available. Once we are able to feel and understand the repressed emotions of childhood, we will no longer need contempt as a defense against them. On the other hand, as long as we despise the other person and over-value our own achievements (“he can’t do what I can do”), we do not have to mourn the fact that love is not forthcoming without achievement. Nevertheless, if we avoid this mourning it means that we remain at bottom the one who is despised, for we have to despise everything in ourselves that is not wonderful, good, and clever. Thus we perpetuate the loneliness of childhood: We despise weakness, helplessness, uncertainty-in short, the child in ourselves and in others. The contempt for others in grandiose, successful people always includes disrespect for their own true selves, as their scorn implies: “Without these superior qualities of mine, a person is completely worthless.” This means further: “Without these achievements, these gifts, I could never be loved, would never have been loved.” Grandiosity in the adult guarantees that the illusion continues: “I was loved.” It is not true that evil, destructiveness , and perversion inevitably form part of human existence, no matter how often this is maintained. But it is true that we are daily producing more evil and, with it, an ocean of suffering for millions that is absolutely avoidable. When one day the ignorance arising from childhood repression is eliminated and humanity has awakened, an end can be put to this production of evil.

- . . . When we consider the major role intimidation plays in this ideology, which was still at the peak of its popularity at the turn of the century, it is not surprising that Sigmund Freud had to conceal his surprising discovery of adults' sexual abuse of their children, a discovery he was led to by the testimony of his patients. He disguised his insight with the aid of a theory that nullified this inadmissible knowledge. Children of his day were not allowed, under the severest of threats, to be aware of what adults were doing to them, and if Freud had persisted in his seduction theory, he not only would have had his introjected parents to fear but would no doubt have been discredited, and probably ostracized, by middle-class society. In order to protect himself, he had to devise a theory that would preserve appearances by attributing all “evil”, guilt and wrongdoing to the child's fantasies. in which the parents served only as the objects of projection. We can understand why this theory omitted the fact that it is the parents who not only project their sexual and aggressive fantasies onto the child but also are able to act out these fantasies because they wield the power. It is probably thanks to this omission that many professionals in the psychiatric field, themselves the products of "poisonous pedagogy" have been able to accept the Freudian theory of drives, because it did not force them to question their idealized image of their parents. With the aid of Freud's drive and structural theories, they have been able to continue obeying the commandment they internalized in early childhood: "Thou shalt not be aware of what your parents are doing to you.” When still in diapers, the child learns to knock at the gates of love with “obedience,” and unfortunately often does not unlearn this ever after. In a totalitarian state, which is a mirror of his upbringing, this citizen can also carry out any form of torture or persecution without having a guilty conscience. His “will” is completely identical with that of the government. Both Hitler and Stalin had a surprisingly large number of enthusiastic followers among intellectuals. Our capacity to resist has nothing to do with our intelligence but with the degree of access to our true self. Indeed, intelligence is capable of innumerable rationalizations when it comes to the matter of adaptation. Educators have always known this and have exploited it for their own purposes. Grünewald writes that he has never yet found willfulness in an intellectually advanced or exceptionally gifted child. Such a child can, in later life, exhibit extraordinary acuity in criticizing the ideologies of his opponents-and in puberty even the views by his own parents-because in these cases his intellectual powers can function without impairment. Furthermore, the teacher finds the soil already prepared for obedience, and the political leader has only to harvest what has been sown. When children are trained, they learn how to train others in turn. Children who are lectured to, learn how to lecture; if they are admonished, they learn how to admonish; if scolded, they learn how to scold; if ridiculed, they learn how to ridicule; if humiliated, they learn how to humiliate; if their psyche is killed, they will learn how to kill--the only question is who will be killed: oneself, others, or both. Those children who are beaten will in turn give beatings, those who are intimidated will be intimidating, those who are humiliated will impose humiliation, and those whose souls are murdered will murder. Hitler, Stalin, Mao and other dictators were exposed to severe physical mistreatment in childhood and refused to face up to the fact later. Instead of seeing and feeling what had happened to them, they avenged themselves vicariously by killing millions of people. And millions of others helped them to do so. For some years now, there has been proof that the devastating effects of the traumatization of children take their inevitable toll on society-a fact that we are still forbidden to recognize. This knowledge concerns every single one of us, and-if disseminated widely enough-should lead to fundamental changes in society; above all, to a halt in the blind escalation of violence. The more we idealize the past and refuse to acknowledge our childhood sufferings, the more we pass them on unconsciously to the next generation. People whose integrity has not been damaged in childhood, who were protected, respected, and treated with honesty by their parents, will be-both in their youth and in adulthood-intelligent, responsive, empathic, and highly sensitive. They will take pleasure in life and will not feel any need to kill or even hurt others or themselves. They will use their power to defend themselves, not to attack others. They will not be able to do otherwise than respect and protect those weaker than themselves, including their children, because this is what they have learned from their own experience. For the human soul is virtually indestructible, and its ability to rise from the ashes remains as long as the body draws breath. Only the mourning for what one has missed at the crucial time can lead to real healing. One can only remember what has been consciously experienced. The art of not experiencing feelings. A child can experience her feelings only when there is somebody there who accepts her fully, understands her, and supports her. If that person is missing, if the child must risk losing the mother’s love of her substitute in order to feel, then she will repress emotions. Depression as Denial of the Self Depression consists of a denial of one’s own emotional reactions. This denial begins in the service of an absolutely essential adaptation during childhood and indicates a very early injury. There are many children who have not been free, right from the beginning, to experience the very simplest of feelings, such as discontent, anger, rage, pain, even hunger-and, of course, enjoyment of their own bodies. Only the never-ending work of mourning can help us from lapsing into the illusion that we have found the parent we once urgently needed-empathic and open, understanding and understandable, honest and available, helpful and loving, feeling, transparent, clear, without unintelligible contradictions. Such a parent was never ours, for a mother can react empathically only to the extent that she has become free of her own childhood; when she denies the vicissitudes of her early life, she wears invisible chains. In order to become whole we must try, in a long process, to discover our own personal truth, a truth that may cause pain before giving us a new sphere of freedom. If we choose instead to content ourselves with intellectual “wisdom,” we will remain in the sphere of illusion and self-deception." I believe when I went into a coma in 1968 it was due to shock. At the time I was taken to a hospital and many tests were done. My doctors decided I might have a tumor on my pancreas. After surgery I went into a deeper coma and my husband was told to come back to the hospital. At the end of December of 1968 my doctor spoke with a doctor from Billings hospital in Chicago. Shortly after this I was admitted to Billings hospital. They did many tests and decided I should be in the research dept. of this hospital. I was there for six months. There's a reason I'm writing this. I truthfully know (as well as I can know) ,that the coma and everything there after, was due to the stress I was living under. I'm 84 now and I'm taking hydrocortisone. I've had three crisis's but other than that I feel pretty good. Thank you very much for reading this.

Your body is like a recorder and records everything that happens to you in your life. I learned this in primal/ gestalt therapy. When I had a painful area in my body my therapist would have me feel into the pain and "research" the origins....almost always it was a memory recorded from childhood trauma. Like an invisable bruise, once you investigate your body's messages( pains and discomforts) you will one by one heal your wounds and learn to love yourself. As a child i was molested by close family members and beaten severely being blamed for the assaults. Fortunately, I was trained professionally in music and dance which aided my enduring these "parents" until I was 18 and legally able to run away from this crazy household. They were never protective or parents as the social media has brainwashed the world to believe...' everyone has a loving mom and dad, granddad etc.' I was the eldest and did have the advantage of one set of grandparents that loved and paid for that music and dance education which allowed me to channel the pain and anger I was going thru, at least partially. Lucky, because I had other adults that were teachers and took an interest in my well being. I was an over achiever because beatings were the price for not getting straight A's. Never allowed back into this family unit again after I exposed them and asked for help I have lived like an orphan most of my life. The family has never changed from holding me at fault as John Bradshaw stated every family has a scapegoat and apparently that has been my role for most of my life. Leave bad environments and seek out what is good for your love and self excceptance. Environment is everything! never did I tell my friends of my education , it was too high brow ..and the man i almost married i told of my childhood and he called me damaged goods. So much for that. Professionally trained artists are pushed and under so much pressure to be perfect. Many give it up when they move away from those that expect them to be so much. They also have attachment disorders due to lack of human contact and love. We are human and more than performers, we were born to be more! eg

Thanks for your insight. I once told a suitor about my past and although he assured me I wasn't damaged goods , I found it interesting that he even mentioned damaged goods I never once asked him that. Perhaps my energy. Anyways he predicted I would be depressed at age 35. And other strange comments like he wondered if anyone had ever loved me. Something I have never doubted. Anyways here I am at age 35 and I am not depressed. I no longer feel it necessary to talk about my past but I use it to learn and heal. I learned that people underestimate our ability to heal. Not everyone appreciates or deserves to know everything about you. Some use it to feel better about themselves. Even that experience is a teaching for me. I was also the scapegoat but now I know better and I don't need to be one anymore. Everything my family says I know were it comes from. Our so called toxic parents are probably more traumatized than we were. I know that is the case in my case.

Most of the more severe illnesses happen to people by an upsetting event happening in their lives that takes them by surprise, unexpectedly, impacting first in the brain, then in the corresponding organ which that part of the brain controls. The end of WWI had absolutely everything to do with the Flu and lung TB outbreak that occurred killing millions. In nature, the biological conflict linked with a territorial fear (just what it means-a fear in your territory, your home, your community, etc.) is a widening of the bronchia (tissue loss). Your body attempts to widen your bronchia in order to allow more air into your lungs to give you more strength and energy to fight to keep your territory safe. Stay with me.......The biological conflict linked with a death fright impacts the lungs. The lungs attempt to grow larger in order to allow more air in because breath equals life, as we all know. No breath equals death. Why are so many people across the world suddenly having their appendix removed? The appendix is associated with “being in fear for one’s life”. The HEALING phase is the rupture/inflammation. While you are in the fear or death fright conflict, you notice no symptoms of “disease”, except you have cold hands, cold feet, you can’t sleep, you awaken at 3 AM every night, you have little appetite. During the war, millions of people were in fear of the bombing of their homes and cities where the war was most active. Fearing for their lives, their loved ones in the war, their ability to survive. The food in the stores was sparse due to shortages. This lasted for 4 long years! The longer the conflict, the worse the healing phase. Within 2 weeks of the German Chancellor announcing the end of WWI, these millions of people ALL went into the healing phase all at the same time. It is during the healing phase that you experience symptoms of illness! What is the healing phase of the bronchia widening? Severe bronchitis, pneumonia. The body attempts to refill this lost tissue and you experience inflammation, fever, coughing, body aches, fatigue, etc. What is the healing phase of the extra lung tissue that grew? Decomposing of the tissue by TB bacteria and fungi. The symptoms of this healing phase are: severe coughing up of blood and tissue, fever, inflammation, severe mucous, body aches, fatigue. During this decomposing of the extra tissue (tumor), the body expels a lot of protein, and without replenishment, severe protein loss can result in death. Antibiotics did not exist yet. If TB bacteria does not exist in a person or they have been vaccinated against TB (big mistake), then the tumor will simply encapsulate and become dormant and not harm you. Who died during the Spanish Flu? Mainly the poor who could not afford to buy meat and proper nourishment, and the people who were directly impacted by the bombings and destruction of their homes. Millions of people suffered fear and death frights during the fighting of WWI, and millions of people all went into healing at the end of it. Not everyone was affected because not everyone suffered the same way. It’s not a “flu”, it’s not something you “catch”. It’s biological, meaningful, and unavoidable. One hundred years later, a Fear Campaign begins, using the media to spread it......

I never could build a bound with her , even if I am a mother myself now. I was feeling always bad when even if a friend didn’t show up to meet or ran late .. now I understand why. I feel so scared that my daughter lives such feelings even if I just drop her off to school. It’s a painful feeling . I come to hear Dr Mate to not mess up with her life. John E Sarno talks about this too- has several books published decades ago. He also helped many people and his views were not welcomed at the time. When I realized my backpain was repressed anger about a decade ago it changed my life and I very much looked at that pain as a great teacher. It would come and go after my first experience with Sarno’s teachings and each time it returned I knew it wanted me to address something inside myself. I had such pain at 30 I couldn’t get out of bed some mornings without help, and within a week of reading Sarno’s books my life changed and has never been the same. Very similar messages here but with different labeling.

I needed many filling when young. But when I got away from home, I was seldom ill. I needed medical treatment only 3 times in the last 50 years. I am easily angered. When I get into some rage, I feel a cold coming on. So, I check my anger, and I avoid the cold that was coming on.

Our emotions are our energy, especially anger (this is why narcs want them) & the sooner we figure out how to pull our anger back inside of ourselves, transmute it and re-direct it back out into useful ways that we can use to combat what made us angry in the 1st place, the sooner we can control our surroundings. Our emotions then rise from that ID and that prepares and activates our bodies for purpose, sometimes action (ie adrenaline/epinephrine), but not just or limited too. Somatic repression works similarly and will keep whatever part of the body active or off, and cause physical dysregulation. They do not really get to take energy from us, but they can cause us to cut shrink and cut ourselves off. That energy isn't as limited as a you have energy or I have energy sort of covert game. Please be very careful not to fall into the same trap as they do. Unless of course I am wrong, in which case, have at it, carefully defend yours and your boudaries (which is important). But if you believe as they do (which is not without merit, but for entirely other reasons, like using it to leverage work, time and effort from others, in that way energy and action is a limited resource) at some point you might just try to do the same thing but in other ways, at some point.

A friend sent me this link and im glad they did , as parents who have had severe illness - primarily due to psychosomatic distress, this is an important message A book my Peter Blythe- Stress Disease- first introduced me to this concept many years ago. I too have suffered from emotional stress in the past, much due to my own emotional baggage, guilt, trauma & shame... and being untrue to my true self .. It all starts with us... we must first forgive and heal ourselves..and not rely on outside influences.. otherwise we will be a slave to them... for me forgiveness from our heart, loving our soul. Its not easy.. it may fight within us at every step..but sometimes we need to suspend disbelief .. we all deserve happiness and love... Illness is a lesson and at times we must take the learnings and let go of the emotion...

His theories, insight and over all concepts are so interesting to why we do things and how it makes us feel. I'm not really an educated person ,but feel I'm not stupid either. I've had lots of traumas, situations along with chemical addictions. So going forward and understanding WHY we do what we do. has opened my mind to so many things that have plagued me over the years. I feel I was able to identify, relate and feel his empathy towards the Body and Mind concept. I have a vision problem I was born with and have 9 eye operations with no success, so I don't read well for my double vision gives me headaches. Although I can do art work,, go figure. Thanks again for you insights that I've been thinking about all morning. Sincerely, Lori

The "why" is so essential. When we start learning what our own automatic thought processes are, and how we respond to stress/trauma, we start building the awareness to change it.

Explains so much to me about the issues I have had. Also why unfortunately messages that I heard in some, thankfully not all, Churches were really unhealthy for me. Like the message that I was selfish.. As someone who had a history of emotional abuse in childhood, being raped, being sexually abused, I already had depression and PTSD, I did not also need to be assaulted with the message that I was selfish.

I worked a while in a large Norwegian hospital where the only medical team that didn't have a ward was the psychosomatic treatment staff, because they would have to treat people with all sorts of diverse illnesses and visit all sorts of surprising wards. That was when l had the realization that the brain has a pretty extreme influence on other organs, and incidentally it also seems to go the other way as well.

It just occurred to me with this talk, and in my intense anger toward my sister the last several years, that I sublimated until my early 60's while she brutally demeaned and abused me making sure to do it when we were alone...recently she said to my cousin "Why is she so damned angry?". I haven't spoken to her in 6 years since my parents died, continually dragging up all the horrible things she did to me since I was a baby. Now I realize why I keep playing it in my head. I never allowed myself to speak up to her EVER for 66 years. I'm processing. I now am allowing the intense anger I suppressed all this time. All those years of suppression. Dear god.

He's such an amazing and inspiring human being. Such a gentle, loving, and intelligent soul... I'm brought to tears every single time I listen to him no matter what the main subject at hand is. And wow, those were really good questions at the end! It's a little unfortunate that he misheard the last question when she asked about postpartum depression rather than depression in general, and I would've loved to hear his response specifically regarding that topic, too; but I at least feel pretty confident I could find something somewhere of his about it nonetheless, I'm sure. And as well renowned as he is, I really wish still that even more people would devote some of their precious time and their undivided attention to his wisdom. I really do believe the whole world could benefit from doing so.

There’s a Japanese tradition of being concerned that your fam will get cancer, gut ulcers, anemia, and more if they are too stressed. A lot of Asian and older western medical advice has an emphasis on what Dr. Maté is talking about. It’s odd how we continuously lose and regain information throughout generations.

For so long I defended my parents whom I placed on a pedestal because they immigrated to this country and accomplished the “American Dream “. My two younger brothers and I were raised in a Christian environment where we the “word of God” was instilled in us and the “fear of God seared into us” going to church 3-4 times a week was a requirement. Corporal punishment was part of life. Sheltered and emotionally neglected. As time passed I wanted to be involved in extra curricular activities like wanting to learn to play the piano or karate classes. I played football from 7th to 12th grade never once seeing my parents in the stands supporting me. I have no school football pictures to prove I ever played football because to them that was a game of demons where people were violently trying to kill each other they said. I fell in love with baseball in the 6th grade when a friend of mine introduced me to it and his father covering the cost to enroll me in a baseball league whereupon I became the league MVP as a “rookie” with the most home runs. It felt amazing every time we won a game. We went 18-2 and won the championship. Never once seeing my parents in the stands supporting me like all the other kids parents. These are some of my fondest memories as a kid, never once have I recalled a fond memory such as these with my father. People who watched me grow up describe me as a kid whom one would say has adhd in today’s world. Those same people also remember saying to themselves “those poor kids always home never having fun”. At the age of 18 I was incarcerated and sentenced to 20 years in prison for an armed robbery of which I did 16-1/2 years on. I was released in 2014 healthy as can be feeling could take on the world. Never in my life had I broken a bone in my body or any medical issues. My parents rolled out the red carpet and funded a small business (food truck) for me that I could not manage in the end because I tore my knees exercising one day. THEN CAME MY DOWNFALL...... like everything came crashing down at once. I was stressing myself out trying to make my parents happy and proud of me. My back started hurting for no reason, I started to lose my fine motor skills. I could no longer write anymore than a sentence without fatigue on my wrists. Friends I wrote during my incarceration would common how eloquent my writings were and how I should write a book one day. Writing a 40 page letter was nothing to me. I started to see all the specialists I could reach. Some of the best Neurologists and neuro-surgeons and scientists whom all scratched their head at the enigmatic symptoms I was displaying that pointed towards carpal-tunnel but could not wrap their head around it to give me 100% diagnosis so I was tested for all sorts of diseases like MS, ALS, FIBROMYALGIA, etc because of all the symptoms I described. My parents and siblings would be furious because I would not answer the phone when they called because the vibrations of the ringer or vibrate of the cellphone would send painful reverberations throughout my entire body from the point of contact. So bad I would literally drop my phone the second it rang. If I was leaning on the metal fence 100 feet away from the front gate and it would start to open I could feel the painful sensations from the motor running. It got so bad I couldn’t even drive because I could feel the vibrations of the motor. So I test drove a tesla and this time I could literally feel the ridges on the road through the tires. Just totally perplexing all the Doctors that were treating. The thoughts of having a terminal illness only sent me into a deeper spiral of emotions. Eventually I had a Radio Frequency Ablation (RFA) and carpal tunnel release surgery on my right hand all for naught because the symptoms never went away. My family discarded me, took me off the will and coerced me to sign back a couple properties I that were supposed to be for me when they passed. I felt I had ADHD based on my recent actions and behavior. During my research I came across many disorders that fit my symptoms but the ones that made everything clear was NARCISSISM and ANTI SOCIAL PERSONALITY DISORDER (Psycopathy) I could not believe my eyes when I read articles from world renowned Doctors that clearly wrote about my family even-though they had no idea who my family was. At 41 years of age I came to the realization that I was raised by an overt Narcissistic mother and and enabling Covert Narcissistic father whom created a Narcissistic Psycopathic brother. I’ve been devastated to say the least. I’ve come to learn that what I developed is Somatic Disorders on top of the many other things I’m sure I have like CPTSD, ADHD, DEPRESSION etc. so long a list I can’t even remember the names to it all. Thankfully I have my two babies that keep me alive everyday. If it wasn’t for my wife whom I realize has rescued me from the toxic monstrous family I was raised in I would be in a mental hospital. I recently came across Doctor Gabor Mate studies and have no doubt he has helped me solve the mysterious health problems I’ve had. This by far is the saddest chapter of my life. The betrayal of my family.

I developed acne after being rejected by someone I loved, still problematic over a decade later. I also got tonsillitis after being rejected by someone else I loved, though that healed with treatment after about a month and one relapse. A broken heart really can mess with you physically. Also I definitely notice I get ill more since moving overseas into an environment with more emotional stressors.

The thoughts we let ourselves keep or get away with are the ones that decide our destiny and it's up to us to pull our minds into line... When I was 12 I began a strange compulsive coughing habit and something said to me "stop this or we will grow up like this and won't be able to stop" so I did. Looking back, it was almost like a type of Tourettes or obsessive/compulsive disorder was trying to grip my mind. And while I was with my ex-husband, I constantly had this understanding that I was going to die at 65ys old - now I am no longer with him, that has disappeared from my consciousness. It is up to us to listen carefully to what our subconsciousness is trying to tell us and take control of our minds and therefore our bodies, our health and our existence.

I had a good doctor when I was going through emotional abuse at home, explain to me how the immune system works, that stress jeopardizes it's efficacy, and informed me that unless I made a change in my life, my symptoms would continue to worsen. He first referred me to a psychiatric nurse, and soon thereafter I left my abusive husband.
