Stress is ubiquitous these days - it plays a role in the workplace, in the home, and virtually everywhere that people interact. It can take a heavy toll unless it is recognized and managed effectively and insightfully. Western medicine, in theory and practice, tends to treat mind and body as separate entities. is separation, which has always gone against ancient human wisdom, has now been demonstrated by modern science to be not only artificial, but false. e brain and body systems that process emotions are intimately connected with the hormonal apparatus, the nervous system, and in particular the immune system. Emotional stress, especially of the hidden kind that people are not aware of, undermines immunity, disrupts the body's physiological milieu and can prepare the ground for disease. ere is strong evidence to suggest that in nearly all chronic conditions, from cancer, ALS, or multiple sclerosis to autoimmune conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease or Alzheimer's, hidden stress is a major predisposing factor. In an important sense, disease in an individual can be seen as the “end point” of a multigenerational emotional process. If properly understood, these conditions can provide important openings for compassion and self-awareness, which in turn are major tools in recovery and healing.
Dr. Maté’s presentation includes research findings, compelling and poignant anecdotes from his own extensive experience in family practice and palliative care, and illuminating biographies of famous people such as athlete Lance Armstrong, the late comedienne Gilda Radner, or famed baseball legend Lou Gehrig. The presentation is based on When the Body Says No, a bestselling book that has been translated into more than ten languages on five continents.

jedisjumphigh2 It's refreshing. Too many public speakers use this sort of over the top inflection in their voice that just screams "I'm a very important person". That to me is a sign of insecurity. Mate seems completely confident in what he has to say precisely because he doesn't act "confident".

I was a people pleaser, ignoring my own feelings and my own needs. I suffered from severe fatigue and joint pain. After learning to listen to my own needs and realizing I matter too, these symptoms mysteriously disappeared.

finally, it is refreshing to hear a medical doctor with common sense. human body is not like a car, we cannot just replace parts and expect it to work right. the connection with our mind and emotions have to be addressed as well.

You were born pristine and authentic. Completely in touch with yourself. And then you learned that in order to stay attached to your environment you had to suppress that part of yourself. The suppression itself became a form of survival. No wonder you're afraid to be authentic! Because there is something in you saying: "If I'm authentic, I won't be loved anymore. And if I'm not loved, I won't survive." We keep choosing attachment over authenticity and then we get sick. - Gabor Maté

could you please recommend carl jungs books to me? theres a conflict between my mind and my shadow, the shadow takes over when im threatened but only when im in a safe environment, i beleieve thats what untamed means? the shadow is a bully kinda but is like a warm shot of whisky on adecember night. courage my shadow gives. i would appreciate any insight on what books you think might satiate my curiosity with answers fuller than a full course meal!

Somebody sees me & can explain what happened to me, because all I heard was that I wasn’t good enough.. and never would be .. gabor to me, is a source of knowledge, like a father figure. to call him that would be an understatement its like a second dad, the calmer dad, well i bet even if i tried my best he wouldnt hit me that makes me feel secure i miss my mom, i realize finally that i need a mothers love. we are all on our individual paths walking together, alone, aimless. only most arent walking on the path they are just standing still hoping the path would take them somewhere, and others try to jump onto others' paths. and here i feel i am trying to talk, and wave and scream and do everything in my capability to make others hear me out, but evrryone ive met has neither removed their cosmic austro suit nor have they tried talking to me. i do feel naked walking on my path, i want people to join me but i know many wont, its disheartening to see that no one responds to my voice eventhough they can hear me it hurts me to see no one even takes off their astro suit, why dont you follow me ?? its safe to walk on your own path wihout fear! if youre scared please atleast talk to me. im sad because i realized my dad gave up on me 5 years ago, and i just realized that a week back, the truth is hard to accept. i just want my mum

@@Mohit-hz4ho We all feel alone sometimes and unheard. It can hurt, but it isn’t personal. Rather, everyone is just doing the best he or she can in an often challenging world. Pull back to the present moment. That’s the place life is manageable. Focus on what you can do in this moment rather than what is out of reach. Ask yourself what you need right now? Can you provide that for yourself in someway? Develop self compassion because that is the core of healing. Many blessings to you. We will never meet, but we are journeying together. You are not alone.

Awesome lecture. We should have this lectures in primary school's, and high schools and colleges. It would mean a world to me if I could hear this as a child, because I had no one to talk to, and I was on my own with solving problems. And I am not the only one...

Such a beautiful and wise talk. I too was diagnosed with colitis but cured it when the doctor told me that my own immune system was fighting against me. I wept and went on the road to deep inner healing. Now I have no colitis! And that is PNI X

Fascinating, I put everyone’s needs before my own, I have had MS for years and have been struggling with work, saying no is hard for me but I need to stop working as i feel it’s killing me, no exaggeration, this lecture has made me realise that I need to live life for ME! Thank you 💐

Because i of this guy ive learnes about him in the last 5 week my chronic anxiety has gone the paranoia the self consciousness i feel safe in my body and my nervous system feels like its in the rest and digest function agter 30 years. The thoughts the emotions the beliefs the beahviours are lifting and being released. Glad i came across him

Diagnosed with POTS, Fibro, Chronic Fatigue and IBS issues. I never had any issues before. I don't know when this all started a year or so after my first pregnancy however, I will say I have been through a lot of trauma in my life so that could also be it. I wish I knew but watching this is beginning to give me an answer

Dr. Mate’s work is so critically important to the next phase in the development of wellness of the human species. None of this stuff is being taught in medical schools, so doctors, by and large, are left with no other choice but to treat symptoms. Disease should be treated before a human is even born. Medicine should be about equipping people with the ability to manage, minimize or eliminate stress BEFORE those people create and raise humans of their own. Every human’s lifelong health is (it seems) determined by the health of the parents prior to conception. We need to create a society where adults who are planning to have a family feel a very strong sense of responsibility to do everything they can to ensure a healthy foundation and life for their offspring. We can get there.

You have referred to a protege cellist before. As a accomplished pianist I understand also the significance of my music. I was adopted at age 2, into a conservative evangelical home, to be seen and not heard. I was not allowed to argue with my sister, nor did I ever hear my parents argue. Our church focused on our shortcomings and inability to measure up to “ Gods standard” long story short, I have suffered with ADD, migraines, IBS, depression and as I have aged, severe osteoporosis porosity and Rheumatoid Arthritis ( I’m 68). I can sit at the piano, alone, for hours and play and cry. It feels almost spiritual! Exhausting, but healing. I saw a Netflix program called ‘Health’ and was fascinated by the woman throwing rocks into a lake as a stress release and the practice of Reiki. How do you feel about these as ways towards healing ?

Sorry to hear about your upbringing, which seems like it was designed around repression and inducing guilt. I don't know about throwing rocks into a lake, but I would imagine that any activity that eases your stress contributes towards healing. As for reiki, I used to practice it and had good results.

what helps me is, trying to think of a 3rd person as the mediator. its important to note that the 3rd person is unknown, its neither your mind nor your body. let it remain unknown, try to feel that theres some unknown inside you, you need to let that unknown surface. actually, im tired of giving step by step instructions , coz my voice isnt responded to , so if you need someone to talk to i would be happy to just listen to you the message is your mind and bofy need to be in a waltz like true lovers, trust must be established. dont lie to yourself could be the easisest non spiritual way of saying thigs. your mind and body, from your comment it seems theyre disconnected. Just a tad bit no worries! atleast you can feel your gut and your mind i could nt feel my gut . shadow is a personality surfacing at certain times. untamed shadow comes out only when threatened in safe places

Going within, meditation, going into the fear and stress in the body, and when you feel it fully you cry it out. Many tools can help though, being asked the direct question (by yourself): 'what am I afraid off?'; and you always do know the answer, music, being around loving individuals, psychedelics etc.

Hi +Brian Sand Perhaps we all find our own way. Meditation / mindfulness / relaxation / art therapy / nutrition / any creativity / sport ... whatever floats your boat! Anything that gets you into a 'flow' state that takes you out of crazy thought spirals. My game-changer was adjusting how I breathe. *During fight / flight, we breathe in shallow gasps at the top of the lungs.* When we gasp shallow breaths, we deprive our body of Oxygen. Our body panics for lack of air, putting us into fight or flight mode. Panic clouds our judgement, reduces our problem-solving ability. *During rest & digest, we breathe slow and deep from our belly.* Breathing slowly while relaxing tells our body all is peaceful, provides vital Oxygen. Stanford University are teaching breathing techniques to war vets with PTSD. Results are outstanding, long-lasting, life-changing. *Blissful Breathing Technique ... Your 100% Free Valium* 1. Gently inhale filling belly, then ribs, then upper chest. Feels like gently inflating a balloon. When lungs are full, gently pause. 2. Gently exhale, releasing all body tension. Feels like a gentle full-body sigh. Actively release any stress or tension from your body. My exhale can be 3x longer than my inhale. Never force, be kind to yourself, go slow. 3. Pause after exhale. Enjoy the moment. Revel in the peacefulness :) Let sounds gently wash over you. Relax until next gentle inhale. Repeat as long as you want. I've gone from power panic to pure peace in 20 mins. Experiment, find out what works for you. There's a ton of research into breathing well. It's mind-blowing that we don't get taught how to do this. It's genuinely the missing link. For children that have eczema, what’s the cure to that? Has anyone completely healed from that?

They often grow out of it naturally. I mostly grew out of my asthma & eczema, apart from the occasional flare-up when super stressed. For instance, when my grandpa died I was suddenly covered in eczema, and when my cat died I cried so hysterically that it gave me an asthma attack, but aside from those adult instances, I've been completely unmedicated and mostly free of both asthma & eczema since about the age of 12. I forgot to add that taking baths with epsom salts can help a lot to soothe the eczema, although of course it's not a cure. Also, identifying and avoiding allergens and emotional stressors, as well as learning healthy coping mechanisms for anxiety can go a long way to help. Best of luck with it. I know it's easier said than done, but try not to stress about it too much yourself, as as you heard in this talk, a parent's stress can and does definitely transfer to their child, especially if that child is pretty sensitive. I know it was the case with me. You might want to try some kind of joint activity that you and your child can do to de-stress. I hope some of this helps.

I have healed my severe adult eczema (I had it as a child too) using a neuroplasticity based program called the Dynamic Neural Retraining System. It is not designed for kids. When the child is the one with the ailment, they recommend that the parent does the program even if they themselves have no symptoms. Because children take so many cues from parents, this is usually enough for the child to recover in a few months

I think it's possible that there are familial psychosocial behaviors/patterns, and also some genetic or epigenetic factors that increase risk, but psychosocial factors may push people over into actually getting the condition
